After spending last season with the Giants, quarterback Russell Wilson may not have to go far to find his next team. Wilson visited the Jets on Monday, Brian Costello of the New York Post reports.
No signing is imminent, but there is “mutual interest” between the Jets and the 37-year-old Wilson, according to Connor Hughes of SNY. Wilson still lives in the area and “doesn’t really want to leave,” per Hughes.
Wilson was among the NFL’s top signal-callers for a large portion of a Seattle run that spanned from 2012-21, but the one-time Super Bowl winner’s production has fallen off in recent years. Since the end of his decade-long tenure in Seattle, where he earned nine Pro Bowl nods, Wilson has played for three teams in a four-year span.
Wilson’s fruitful Seahawks stint came to an end when they sent him to the Broncos for two first-round picks, a pair of second-rounders, defensive lineman Shelby Harris, tight end Noah Fant and QB Drew Lock in a March 2022 blockbuster. It ended up an ill-fated trade for the Broncos, who got two underwhelming seasons from Wilson and sputtered to a 13-21 record. They released Wilson in March 2024 and took on a then-record $85MM in dead money.
Looking for an upgrade over Kenny Pickett, the Steelers made a pair of dart throws when they added Wilson and Justin Fields ahead of the 2024 season. Both players wound up making starts, but Wilson got more action. Across 11 starts, he threw 16 touchdowns against five interceptions. While the Steelers went a middling 6-5 in Wilson’s outings, they finished 10-7 and earned a wild-card berth. Wilson completed 20 of 29 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns in the first round of the playoffs, but the Ravens handled the Steelers in a 28-14 victory. That proved to be Wilson’s last game in Pittsburgh.
Wilson was one of three high-profile QB pickups for the Giants last offseason. Before trading back into the first round to draft Jaxson Dart 25th overall, they signed Wilson to a one-year, $10.5MM guarantee and gave Jameis Winston $8MM over two years. Wilson opened the season as the Giants’ starter, but then-head coach Brian Daboll quickly pulled the plug. Daboll handed the reins to Dart in Week 4. Even though Dart later missed two games with a concussion, the Giants turned to Winston instead of Wilson in those instances. Wilson’s last start as a Giant came Sept. 21, 2025. He attempted just nine passes the rest of the year.
Shortly after the Giants’ season ended in January, Wilson revealed he suffered a hamstring tear last September. Despite that, he has insisted on multiple occasions that he wants to play a 15th season in 2026. The rebuilding Jets already have a bridge starter in offseason acquisition Geno Smith, Wilson’s former backup with the Seahawks, but the former enjoyed working with the latter in Seattle, per Costello. While rookie fourth-rounder Cade Klubnik, Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe are also in the fold, the Jets may turn to Wilson as Smith’s primary backup next season.

Woof.
Next offseason “Jets host HC & GM candidates.”.
Arty must prefer Buffalo, Miami, or especially New England.
I kind of like the stability currently found in Florham Park.
No favorite teams, Chucky. D Synder killed my Redskins over a decade ago. But I have no problem calling out teams. You know your Jets are going to be bad again.
Buffalo sacked their coach amid a playoff collapse. Miami sacked their coach and purged their roster. New England have a womanizing coach who’s fortunate to still have a job.
And no matter what ESPN or anyone else refuse to acknowledge, burgundy and gold will always mean the Washington Redskins.
Again, your Jets will be on vacation in Jan 2027.
As is the plan in a rebuild. The Jets should be aiming for a top 3 pick once again to finally land that franchise QB. Aaron Glenn will do his best to not let it happen.
Unfortunately, Russ’s Career went Off The Rails once he was away from Pete Carroll, and Darrell Bevell.
He was never the same after smashing his hand on Aaron Donald’s helmet. Lost a step after that, and wasn’t able to raise up others like he used to.
Russ had worse years under bevell then he got fired and played best with schottenheimer
When he got injured, he never came back the same. Plus he was a small QB who made plays with his mobility. Once the mobility was gone he was just a pocket passer, which made him a more of a liability. He’s still smart with with ball and knows how to run an offense, just isn’t the guy you want for the future.
He’s Better off staying & playing for the Savannah bananas. He’ll actually win there.
What can the Jets be thinking? Surely not to compete for a starting job.. Right??
No, they’ve announced Geno is the starter. They’re just looking at veteran backups since the current room has Klubnik, Zappe and Cook.
Would be Ironic if Russ ended up being Genos Backup, as Geno was his Backup in Seattle.
That’s what I was going to say Geno was Russell’s backup for 3 years
Russ still has some usefulness he’s not entirely washed. Why not? He’s a seasoned vet behind Geno and can coach up klubnik and cook in the QB room.
What exactly did you see last year that indicated he wasn’t washed?
Certainly not the same games I was watching. Maybe they need a scout team QB, But on the Jets that could mean starter I guess now that I think about it.
Wilson would’ve gone to Miami if he wanted to remain a starter.
Russ’s Wife Ciara is an Entertainer. He will go wherever is best for her Career, as his is nearing its end.
Baloney. Pittsburgh is about as far removed from Ciara’s hot spots and yet the couple were all over town at various events, especially charitable ones and weekly visits to Children’s Hospital. They have these wonderful things called planes these days
His cowboys game he almost hit 400 passing yards and had a good o line. He isn’t awful people are just bots that repeat what they see online.
Every QB passed for at least 400 yards last season against Dallas lol. Don’t take that game as the norm it was a very rare outlier.
All I know is that the Steelers were winning with Justin Fields and if they had started him one more game would have owed the Bears a second round pick instead of a 4th so they went down in flames and lost 6 straight with Wilson which still makes laugh no end. Why is it significant? Well he wasn’t better than Justin Fields for one. Pittsburgh GM would rather lose Playoff games than give up a second round pick and play someone who’s toast. So I’m not repeating what I’ve seen online, I’m saying what I saw on TV. I don’t parrot anybody. I have my own eyes and thoughts. Plus the Steelers are still being yanked around by 2 people who are toast in McCarthy and Rodgers and Kahn too so 3. So it just keeps getting funnier every day.
Hes definitely better than Justin Fields lmao The moment they plugged Russ into that Pittsburgh offense is the moment their PPG went up. Their defense was winning games while Fields was just there. You constantly have the worst takes
So you’re accusing a franchise that went a bazillion years with an over .500 winning percentage of tanking? Fields couldn’t pass for more than 200 yards per game in Chicago, Pittsburgh, or with the Jets. Wilson was supposedly injured and clearly was the more stable QB. Bears were lucky to even get a 4th for Fields.
Im not sure where he got 2nd round and a 4th from. Hes in his own Chicagoan reality. The trade was a conditional 6th that could turn into a 4th had he played 51% of snaps or more
So your entire Russell Wilson critique is based off 6 games with a mediocre Pittsburgh roster? Okay.
I’ll never forget Russ repeatedly calling audibles and torching the Bengals for 414 yards and a win. The offense finally looked good, with a deadly passing game
But that rubbed Tomlin and Arthur Smith the wrong way. The offense reverted back to 3 and outs with dink and dunk passing, and Russ was reined in.
That game only reinforced what we’d thought.
Smith was the worst. I’m not claiming Russ is anywhere near his prime but he’s as good as what we have here in Pittsburgh
Cincys defense was just as bad as Dallas last year. Any QB would’ve lit them up. They reverted back to 3 and outs because they were playing good defenses again.
Earth to the sentinel: that first Giants-Cowboys game was a shootout that Dallas tied at the gun and won in OT. Thanks to a Giant defense that included the now-departed Dexter Lawrence.
Russ still has solid QB experience. I love how people act like a lower tier passer would have had the same game. He made solid reads and precise throws against an NFL defense period. That means something. Yall stop being bots and watch tape I can name 15 QBs on a roster right now that aren’t on Russ’s level
Here in Pittsburgh, he was a victim of hard-headedness on the part of his OC, who wanted to return to 70’s style football. How dare the guy succeed by doing his own reads and calling audibles.
Yeah I hated Arthur in Atlanta he was in over his head and couldn’t even give Bijan the ball 12 times a game smh
I’ll call you out on that one @SentinelATL. Russ isn’t mobile anymore. He’s a pocket passer now, which was never his strength. Since he can’t escape the pocket and scramble he’s taking more pressure and sacks. He can manage an offense, and not turn the ball over, but he’s no where near what he used to be. Arm strength is down too, tape says he’s throwing lollipops. That week 3 loss to the Chiefs on national TV said Russ was cooked.
He looked good against Dallas. He had time to take shots down the field and he connected on a bunch of those and he was very accurate, in that game. What I saw from Wilson last year was a quarterback that could no longer keep up with the speed of the game. His arm talent is very much alive but it seemed that everything was moving to fast for him. I think he could be useful in a run heavy vertical passing system, asking him to throw underneath and make too many short passes won’t be productive.
You guys know you just made the Steelers look even dumber than I said by ruining the season for a 4th round pick instead of a 2nd right? Whoever was doing what the Steelers were winning with Fields and ended up losing because of Wilson. Those are just facts. LMAO
Still dont know where youre getting a 2nd from. The trade was a conditional 6th that couldve elevated to a 4th. Regardless, Fields is and was garbage
Russell Wilson > Geno Smith
Agreed. Better than Geno for sure.
Geno > Russell
Geno is more athletic and throws a much faster ball at this point.
But he throws a faster ball to the other team.
Many of the INTs were forced by Smith because Raiders didn’t have any WRs or an OL. Jacobi Meyers was their WR1 until he was traded. While Smith is an average QB1 at best, he’s still a better option than Wilson.
That might explain the league-leading 17 INTs he threw with the Raiders last year, but it certainly doesn’t explain the 15 he threw the year before while with the Seahawks. He had JSN, DK Metcalf, and Tyler Locket to throw to. Face it, this guy has thrown more interceptions than anyone in the world that past 2 years. He’s bad.
I dunno. It’s not that I’ve followed Geno closely. In many regards, he’s a success story. But I just think Russ is the better QB even at this stage. Better field awareness and pocket presence.
Geno got cut by the Raiders and picked up by the Jets and announced as their starter.
Think about that.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣the Jets just keep being the Jets….Wilson is cooked…he has zero left
Bills Mafia? Cheatriots fanboy? Dolfan? Or just another Giants groupie?
Okay…but why?
Solid vet to have. They need all the mentorship and stability they can get on that team.
Russ as QB2? Why not?
The greatest trade never made was when the Bears offered Seattle {3} 1st round picks , a 3rd rounder, and 2 others for Wilson. Seattle turned it down. Seattle should still be regretting, while Chicago should be celebrating.
I mean, they got two 1s, two 2s, and one 5th, as well as a few players who stuck around for a bit. It wasn’t like the offer they took was a massive downgrade. It should also be noted that those picks turned into Devon Witherspoon, Charles Cross, Boye Mafe, Derick Hall, and Tyreke Smith. Four of those players contributed to their Super Bowl win this past season with two being franchise cornerstones.
He should stick with the Savanah Bananas.
Are the Jets paying Russ to play and Fields not to play? This is why Mike Tomlin needs a break from football.
It’s time to put the proverbial fork in Mr. Wilson. There’s nothing left in the tank.
Wilson and Rodgers should start a podcast. WE 2 WASHED UP OLD-TIME QBS. Still trying to play when time has passed them by. But as long as you have a dysfunctional Jets organization and an owner like Art Rooney 2,who’s suffering from dilusion, you will have these 2 trying to play like yesteryear.
Looks like Russ has cooked for the final time. The Athletic reports Wilson is in talks to land a TV gig, most likely with CBS for The NFL Today.
