Bills, Panthers Interested In Texas Tech LB Jacob Rodriguez
Ohio State’s Sonny Styles is the top-ranked off-ball linebacker in this year’s class. Styles is a lock to go in the first round on Thursday. Texas Tech’s Jacob Rodriguez could be the second player at the position to come off the board, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports. The Bills and Panthers have done “extensive homework” on Rodriguez, per Fowler.
Whether Rodriguez will sneak into the first round is an option question, but fellow LB CJ Allen (Georgia) reportedly has a chance to go in the top 32. If Rodriguez has surpassed Allen in the pecking order, he may hear his name called tonight. The Panthers are set to pick 19th, while the Bills are scheduled for 26th. Unlike the Bills, the Panthers have a second-rounder, though Rodriguez may not fall to their choice (No. 51). Both Dane Brugler of The Athletic (No. 40) and Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com (No. 42) consider Rodriguez a top-45 prospect.
Rodriguez is coming off an excellent run in the Red Raiders’ defense, but he was initially a quarterback at Virginia in 2021. He transferred to Texas Tech the next year and switched to linebacker. It’s fair to say it was a wise decision.
The 6-foot-1, 231-pound Rodriguez broke out during a 127-tackle 2024 campaign in which he recorded five sacks, forced three fumbles, returned one for a touchdown and intercepted a pass over 14 games. As impressive as Rodriguez’s production was that year, his output last season was downright jaw-dropping. While his sack total fell to one, he put up 128 tackles, forced a whopping seven fumbles and pulled in four interceptions. Rodriguez subsequently garnered major accolades. The unanimous All-American finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting, won Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, and took home the Bronko Nagurski Trophy (nation’s best defender) and the Butkus Award (nation’s top LB), among other honors.
Set to turn 24 years old in September, Rodriguez could start immediately for the team that drafts him. If Buffalo takes him, he could step in alongside either Terrel Bernard or Dorian Williams in the middle of defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard‘s newly installed 3-4 base. The Panthers made a big free agent investment in former Jaguar Devin Lloyd, whom they added on a three-year, $45MM deal, but could attempt to upgrade over Trevin Wallace.
Bengals Host Rueben Bain, Jacob Rodriguez
Thanks in part to a defense that ranked 30th in the NFL in scoring and 31st in yards, the Bengals sputtered to a 6-11 record in 2025. A healthy season from quarterback Joe Burrow would go a long way toward an improved record in 2026, but the Bengals are still in dire need of defensive help. They figure to focus on that side of the ball in the upcoming draft.
Holding the 10th overall pick and looking to boost a lackluster pass rush, the Bengals hosted Miami defensive end Rueben Bain on Friday, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports. There are serious concerns over Bain’s short arms, and some regard Miami teammate and potential first-rounder Akheem Mesidor as the better edge prospect. Although Mesidor is already 25, more teams than expected prefer him to the soon-to-be 22-year-old Bain, according to Albert Breer of SI.com.
While there may be leeriness toward Bain in some circles, the 6-foot-2, 263-pounder is widely considered a top-10 prospect. To finish off a terrific three-season run with the Hurricanes, Bain won ACC Defensive Player of the Year and was a consensus All-American in 2025. In addition to an FBS-high 83 pressures, he tallied 15.5 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks in 16 games.
The Bengals ended last year just 25th in sacks, which explains their interest in Bain. They also lost their best pass rusher, Trey Hendrickson, to the AFC North rival Ravens in free agency. While Hendrickson barely factored in during a seven-game, injury-wrecked 2025, he posted a league-leading 35 sacks over the previous two seasons. Expecting that type of production from Bain or anyone else would be unrealistic, but the Bengals would benefit from adding a new blue-chip talent on the edge.
Cincinnati signed former Seahawk Boye Mafe to a three-year, $60MM contract in free agency, though the team also lost Joseph Ossai to the Jets. That leaves the Bengals with Mafe, Myles Murphy and former first-round pick Shemar Stewart as their top edge rushers. The jury is still out on Stewart, a raw prospect they chose 17th overall last year, after he mustered just 11 tackles and a sack in an eight-game rookie season. Pro Football Focus ranked Stewart’s performance last among 119 qualifiers at his position.
Meanwhile, although there are questions over whether the Bengals will add a linebacker, they hosted decorated Texas Tech LB Jacob Rodriguez on Friday, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. If Rodriguez falls to the Bengals’ second-round pick, they could consider snagging the 6-1, 231-pounder. The Bengals’ second selection slots in at No. 41, which is exactly where Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com ranks Rodriguez among this year’s prospects.
Rodriguez, who began his college career at Virginia, broke out at Texas Tech in 2024. Over 13 games, he racked up 127 tackles, 10.5 TFL, five sacks and three forced fumbles en route to first-team All-Big 12 honors. Last season was another first-team All-Big 12 showing for the 23-year-old Rodriguez, who notched 128 tackles (11 TFL), forced a whopping seven fumbles, intercepted four passes and recorded a sack. He earned unanimous All-America honors, took home major hardware (including the Bronko Nagurski Trophy for the best defender in college football) and finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy race.
In moving on from Germaine Pratt and Logan Wilson, the Bengals have turned over their linebacker group in the past year-plus. The team spent a second-rounder on Demetrius Knight and a fourth-rounder on Barrett Carter last spring. They took over as rookie starters, but neither thrived on a bottom-tier defense. Although the Bengals have not made any needle-moving additions at linebacker this offseason, that could change if they draft Rodriguez or another high-end prospect.
Steelers Host Carson Beck, Cole Payton
The Steelers hosted quarterback prospects Carson Beck and Cole Payton for pre-draft visits this week, according to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor, signaling their interest in some of this class’ less-heralded passers.
At the moment, Pittsburgh does not have a clear starting quarterback for the 2026 season or beyond. 2025 sixth-rounder Will Howard did not play a snap as a rookie, and the Mason Rudolph experiment is probably not worth another try. 42-year-old Aaron Rodgers is poised to reunite with his old head coach Mike McCarthy, but he is hardly a long-term proposition for a Steelers team that has lacked a true franchise quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger‘s retirement in 2022.
But the 2026 draft class is weak at the position, for the third time in five years. The Steelers’ perennial winning seasons under Mike Tomlin always kept them out of range of a top prospect, and this year will be no different. Fernando Mendoza is widely expected to be taken by the Raiders with the first overall pick; the consensus QB2, Ty Simpson, should be available to the Steelers at No. 21, but is not seen as a surefire NFL starter after just one year leading Alabama’s offense.
Pittsburgh may instead look to add another developmental arm to their quarterback room in April. Beck, 23, started for two seasons at Georgia with SEC-highs in attempts, completions, and yards in 2024. He doubled his interception total from six to 12 the following year, leading the conference, causing him to transfer to Miami to rebuild his draft stock. Beck led the ACC with a 72.4% completion percentage, but threw another 12 interceptions including a game-ender in January’s national championship loss to Indiana.
Payton earned North Dakota State’s starting job in 2025 and led the Bison to an undefeated 12-0 season, though they fell to Illinois State in the second round of the FCS playoffs. The 23-year-old only averaged 209 passing yards per game with 16 touchdowns and four interceptions, but he was the highest-graded quarterback in college football by Pro Football Focus. Payton also put up an excellent testing performance at the Combine, ranking among the top three quarterbacks in every drill.
Pryor also notes that the Steelers hosted Texas Tech linebacker Jacob Rodriguez for a visit. He led the Big 12 in solo tackles in each of the last two seasons with an FBS-high seven forced fumbles in 2025. The Nagurski and Bednarik winner did not post elite numbers in Indianapolis, but still had a solid all-around day with the fastest three-cone and short shuttle numbers at his position. With questions about his athleticism answer, Rodriguez has risen to No. 45 on NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah’s rankings and could very well hear his name called on Day 2 of April’s draft.
