After going 1-11 in 12 starts for the Cardinals in 2025, quarterback Jacoby Brissett has been staying away from team activities as he attempts to land a starter-level extension. According to NFL insider Jason La Canfora, though, Brissett will more likely end up being a trade candidate.
With Brissett in line for his second Cardinals season and a backup passer with starting experience in Gardner Minshew, many thought Arizona would spend the first year of new head coach Mike LaFleur tanking its way to as high a draft pick as possible in 2027 in an attempt to land the best of a better crop of quarterbacks than what was available this year. It was presumed that the Cardinals would utilize this year’s draft to bring in a number of strong supporting pieces to prop up their future rookie starter.
Instead, the team took an interestingly different route. When the Cards reportedly were unable to find an offer they deemed worthy of trading out of the No. 3 overall pick for, they opted to select RB1 Jeremiyah Love. They did get around to landing a plug-and-play starting guard at the top of the second round in Chase Bisontis, but with the first pick of the third round, the Cardinals shocked a number of analysts by drafting Miami quarterback Carson Beck, the third passer to come off the board in the 2026 draft class.
Though he heard his name called two rounds after first overall pick Fernando Mendoza, who beat him head-to-head in the College Football Playoff national championship game four months ago, Beck’s six years in college had some evaluators believing he was the most pro-ready passer in the class. Once Beck was wearing a red hat, an NFL general manager reportedly told La Canfora that Arizona would “move Brissett by the (trade) deadline.”
Even if Brissett isn’t traded away immediately, the theory seems clear. If this GM is correct, at some point, Beck would take over as the starter. As a third-round, pro-ready prospect with the top rookie running back and an improved offensive line, there’s a chance Beck could find success and show potential as the team’s future at the position. If such a hypothetical ends up being too far out of reach to become reality and Beck’s starting run leads them to a poor record and a high draft pick, then the Cardinals would be perfectly in line to draft a first-round quarterback in 2027.
Fueling that idea a bit further, recent whispers that veteran free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers may be considering Arizona as a future home appear to be nothing more than rumors. ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss reached out to a source recently to gauge the reality of this possibility, and his source claimed it was “not at all” real. If Rodgers stays away and Brissett gets shipped out, Beck may end up starting as a rookie as the Cardinals make moves to find their QB for the future.

The Cards are a laughable franchise. They went w/ two 30+ year old career backups to start & drafted a guy with elbow/arm damage in the 3rd starting in 2026 really? Trade back and get depth picks last month & get picks to trade up next year. Next year Goodell ‘With another top 5 pick the Cards draft….’. April 2027.
Can only trade back if someone is willing to trade up. Reports were multiple teams in the 2-5 range wanted to trade down but there were no offers to be had. Also hard to judge there QB situation considering it was a 1 QB draft. I’m sure they and their whole fan base would be thrilled to have a top 5 pick in next year’s QB heavy draft.
Don’t want to seem overly critical but is this really the right time to think about this when the draft is over and everyone ‘s roster is basically set? IDK, Just doesn’t seem like a premium sell date.
There’s always an injury before week 1. I think the timing is right because if they didn’t land Beck, they would probably hang on to Brissett.
Seems like having a yard sale in Minnesota in January. Probably a good idea but not a lot of customers that time of year.
Not a lot of suitors, you’re right, but there’s always at least a couple for a bridge-type QB.
“ QB Jacoby Brissett Likely Trade Candidate”
Does it say today?
Does it say tomorrow?
Does it say this week?
Does it say this month?
Does it say next month?
From the article “ an NFL general manager reportedly told La Canfora that Arizona would “move Brissett by the (trade) deadline.”…..which is Tuesday November 4th 4pm ET……6 months away
Yes. It’s definitely the right time to think about roster construction heading into your off season programs and look at who you want to keep vs who you can maybe squeeze a draft pick out of instead of outright cutting a guy during roster cut downs
Green Bay seems like a very obvious destination for Jacoby with Tyrod Taylor currently the back up.
Tennessee could look as another potential spot with Levis the only real backups
Chiefs traded for Fields but easily an upgrade there if they acquire Jacoby
Broncos after what happened last year with Nix could be a good destination for Jacoby as a back up
Steelers could be an immediate starter for them
Mini camp for rookies and veterans for the Cardinals in June 10-12
Training camp is July 24th- August 6th
That is a fair point. I think an equally important point is that I’m not sure any other team in the league considers Brissett a viable option as QB1. The only way a team wants to trade for Brissett is after an injury to their QB has ended their season already. Under those conditions the return can’t be more than a late round draft pick. Most likely a late roud swap. I’m sure teams will be clammering to aquire the QB that lost his job to Carson Beck.
Teams would definitely take Brissett, especially at his salary. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Minshew or Brissett start the season over Beck. Starting Beck isn’t Arizona saying he’s better, it’s just them seeing if they can catch lightning in a bottle on a team that needs a lot of that.
Of course either of those QBs will start over Beck. The idea is that when that doesn’t work and the season is lost, Brissett would be available at the trade deadline as they give Beck a look so they can decide if they have anything there before they go into a draft with a lot more QB options and what will likely be anther high draft choice. I’m saying there is a limited market for Brissett, at any salary, and teams looking to aquire him are not making a playoff push, they are riding out a terrible seaosn as well.
What a mess. Should have drafted Simpson and started the process.
Drafted Simpson 3rd overall are you insane?
As opposed to the dumpster fire the QB plan is currently? That’s insane.
Wasting the third overall pick getting Simpsons killed is a lot more insane than wasting a 3rd round pick getting Beck killed.
I like Jacoby. In a sense he has become Brian Hoyer 2.0. Well travelled and though not good enough to be a full time starter, he can step in and win you a game here and there. Like Hoyer, he won’t lose you a game with a costly late interception so that in itself is worth something.
I could see Brissett winning the job in Cleveland.
Beck is better suited to play Sid in a live action Ice Age reboot
Brisset had a good 2025 as basically the QB1. Outplayed Murray, and actually threw the ball to Harrison Jr, which Murray didn’t do. Toughest division in the NFL. But to bring in Minshew at a higher salary was a bad move. Why?? Can’t blame Brisset for getting pissed off and wanting out. I would too. Cardinals never fail to disappoint.
