Browns DT Perrion Winfrey Facing Misdemeanor Assault Charge

Browns defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey is facing a misdemeanor assault charge in Harris County (Texas), according to cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot. The second-year D-lineman was arrested Monday night.

Winfrey faces a charge of assaulting a family member, per court records, which indicate he grabbed a woman he was dating and “unlawfully, intentionally and knowingly” caused her bodily harm. Winfrey, 22, allegedly grabbed Brianna Mack and pulled her with his hand. He is free on a $1K bond.

The Browns drafted Winfrey in the fourth round last year. Although the team did not make much of an effort to upgrade at defensive tackle during the 2022 offseason, Winfrey did not start any games. Browns coaches also benched Winfrey at points due to maturity issues, Cabot notes. The 6-foot-4 D-lineman was a healthy scratch in multiple games last season.

The Oklahoma product did play regularly, however, lining up for 341 defensive plays with Cleveland as a rookie. He missed four games overall, landing in concussion protocol at one point, and part of the absence was related to a scooter accident.

Cleveland has since added Dalvin Tomlinson at D-tackle, with the big-ticket free agent joining lower-level adds in Trysten Hill and Maurice Hurst Jr. Three years remain on Winfrey’s rookie contract. He could face a suspension under the NFL’s personal conduct policy, regardless of this case’s outcome.

Latest On Browns DT Perrion Winfrey

The Browns entered the season with high expectations for their defensive front, but the interior of the unit has been underwhelming to date. One target of criticism has been rookie defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey, who has been in and out of the lineup this season.

Winfrey’s most recent absence was last week, when he missed Cleveland’s loss to the Bills as a result of a head injury which landed him in concussion protocol. Providing more details on the matter, he said that a scooter accident was the cause of the injury, adding to his reasons for missed time in his debut season.

“I was driving around and just ran into a pole,” the 22-year-old said, via Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com. “Nothing crazy. I looked back to try to see if my friend was still behind me, and when I looked back I ran into the pole. Just things I’ve got to get over as a rookie. Little things here and there.”

After an impressive college career at Oklahoma, Winfrey was lauded in the build-up to the draft for his ability as a pass-rush presence in particular. He landed in Cleveland in the fourth round, and had an opportunity to carve out a role alongside the likes of Jordan Elliott, Taven Bryan and Tommy Togiai. Instead, he has struggled to get on the field, beginning with a disciplinary matter which saw him sit out in Week 2.

The 6-4, 292-pounder has also been absent as a healthy scratch and after missing time due to illness recently. Overall, he has played just 119 snaps this season, making five tackles (including one for loss). His PFF evaluation shows promise as a disruptive presence against the pass, but an overall grade of 45.6 leaves much to be desired. That has contributed in part to the team’s overall struggles in the middle, which has led to a belief that significant moves could be made in the offseason at the position.

Winfrey was cleared from the protocol on Friday, where he was a limited participant in practice. That leaves his game status up in the air for tomorrow’s contest against the Buccaneers, where the Browns will look to make up ground in the AFC Wild Card chase amidst a disappointing campaign.

Browns Sign Round 4 DT Perrion Winfrey, Finalize Draft Class

The final member of the Browns’ 2022 draft class is officially on the books. Cleveland signed defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey to his rookie contract, per a team announcement.

Winfrey had a brief but productive career at Oklahoma. He flashed his ability as a disruptor in the run game with 5.5 tackles for loss in 2020. He then took a step forward with 23 stops, along with 11 TFLs, in 2021. With 5.5 sacks, he also showcased his ability as a pass-rusher, an element which has become increasingly valuable in recent years.

With a jump in PFF grades from 59.7 to 71.3, many have projected significant growth in the next few years for the six-foot-four, 292-pounder. As a result, some felt that Winfrey would have to wait no longer than Day 2 of the draft to hear his name called. Instead, he could end up representing a value find in the fourth round for the Browns, who continue to add youth to the interior of their defensive front.

Winfrey will join the likes of recent mid-round draftees Jordan Elliott and Tommy Togiai as intriguing prospects in the middle of Cleveland’s d-line. His relative weakness defending the run will, in all likelihood, limit his playing time early on in his career, but he could make an impact on passing downs relatively quickly.

With Winfrey under contract for four years, here is the final breakdown of the Browns’ class:
