Latest On Eric Weddle, Chargers

When we noted earlier today that the Chargers were placing Eric Weddle on injured reserve – a move the team has since confirmed – I wrote that the veteran safety may have played his last game with the team. That now looks like a near certainty, with agent David Canter opening up about the fractured relationship between his client and the Chargers.

As Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune writes, the club informed Weddle last Tuesday that he was being fined $10K for remaining on the field during halftime to watch his daughter perform during a dance ceremony. While Weddle and Canter declined to go public with the fine at the time, the agent confirmed it today after the Chargers placed the safety on IR against his wishes. Per Canter, the team also informed Weddle that there would be no room for him to travel on the team plane to the regular season finale in Denver.

According to Acee, Weddle previously hadn’t closed the door on the possibility of returning to the Chargers next season. With his contract set to expire, the 30-year-old said earlier this month that he wouldn’t rule out re-signing with the club. However, after this latest sequence of events, it certainly looks like a lock that he’ll be moving on.

For his part, Canter replied to Acee’s story on Twitter, referring to the headline – “Weddle, Chargers relationship not ‘fine'” – as the “understatement of the decade.” So while Weddle may not publicly say he plans to leave San Diego, it sounds like his agent is looking forward to getting him to the open market in March.

San Diego really has been doing weddle dirty, fining him for staying on the field to each his daughter. Also Weddle has been hella respectful to San Diego and they are just screwing him. Good for him if he moves on

  3. Minnesota Vikings here I come!

  4. The following As for Weddle, the Vikings would have to reach deep into their salary cap to pull this one off. He’s one of the most coveted defensive backs out there, a speedy safety who plays the run well and has versatility to play all four DB positions. But Weddle’s agent David Canter, has acknowledged the two sides have talked about Weddle along with several of his clients. The Vikings didn’t approach Canter about Weddle at the NFL combine. First the Vikings would have to move on from Madieu Williams and his $5.4 million contract. Do that, and now there’s a chance for Weddle. from July of 2011 when the Vikings were pursuing him.

Vikings will go after this guy hard this off season. They open their new stadium next year and have one of the most young and electrifying Defenses out there. The 2 UCLA LB’s, NT Linval Joseph and Safety Harrison Smith. You add Weddle to that mix and the Vikings will have a nasty defense next year!

Oakland is the the place that Weddle can stay close to home, get paid, replace a legend, and end his career with the biggest fan base in the NFL. Too many pros for him not to consider. The Beard has Raiders written all over it!!!!

Weddle should join the Pats or Hawks and win a Super bowl. The Chargers do not have the proper ownership.

  7. Eric said he wants a Superbowl more than money Minnesota with him has a Superbowl caliber defense with a new stadium and the best defensive coach in football and we have the cap space Eric weedle will be a viking when the 2016 season kicks off
