NOVEMBER 24: To little surprise, it will indeed be Olson taking over offensive coordinator duties on an interim basis, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports. Olson has spent 14 seasons as an NFL OC, and in 2023 he worked with Carroll and Smith in Seattle. All parties will hope that familiarity results in improved production to close out the season.
NOVEMBER 23: Halfway through his first season back in the NFL after an eight-year hiatus, Raiders offensive coordinator Chip Kelly is right back out. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Las Vegas has fired Kelly.
Breaking into the NFL as an immediate head coach after major success at Oregon, Kelly initially found more success in Philadelphia, taking his team to the playoffs in his first year at the helm in 2013. Kelly was given control over roster decisions by owner Jeffrey Lurie, but after some questionable trades, some character complaints, and a losing record in his third season, Kelly was fired before he could finish Year 3. Several teams attempted to land him after his dismissal, and he signed with San Francisco, where he was quickly let go after a 2-14 season.
After taking a year away from coaching as a studio analyst at ESPN, Kelly took up the clipboard again to coach at UCLA for six years. Starting in 2022, Kelly started to appear on NFL radars again, and in 2024, following his final year with the Bruins, he began to emerge as an offensive coordinator candidate. He reportedly was aiming for the Raiders’ position under then-head coach Antonio Pierce, and even though he was reportedly interviewed twice, Kliff Kingsbury emerged as the favorite for that job. Kelly then emerged as a candidate for the Commanders’ job, which ultimately went to Kingsbury as Luke Getsy landed the job in Las Vegas.
Having missed out on both positions, Kelly settled back into the world of college football, replacing Bill O’Brien as the offensive coordinator at Ohio State, where he coordinated the 12th-best scoring offense in the country en route to a National Championship victory over current-Bengals defensive coordinator Al Golden‘s Notre Dame defense. The successful year led to more NFL attention as the Texans and Jaguars expressed early interest in Kelly, but he once again homed in on Vegas, and this time, he landed the gig, doing so as the NFL’s highest-paid coordinator.
Now under new head coach Pete Carroll and Kelly (not to mention new minority owner Tom Brady), the Raiders’ momentum seemed to be swinging in a majorly positive direction. Moves were made to improve the offensive side of the ball, starting with a trade that brought quarterback Geno Smith down from Seattle to reunite with Carroll.
Impact free agents like offensive guard Alex Cappa and running back Raheem Mostert were signed. The 2025 NFL Draft was offense-heavy for the Raiders with the consensus top running back, Ashton Jeanty, coming off the board at No. 6 overall, Senior Bowl favorite wide receiver Jack Bech coming out of the second round, two offensive tackles coming out of the third, and two FCS quarterbacks hearing their names called in the sixth.
12 weeks into the 2025 campaign, nothing seems to have panned out. After today’s games, every team in the NFL has played 11 games, and the Raiders sit with New Orleans at the bottom of the league with a league-worst 165 points scored. Las Vegas ranks 30th in the NFL with 2,958 yards of total offense. The team has a bottom-six passing offense and a bottom-two rushing attack.
Smith is having his worst season since reestablishing himself as a starting quarterback, leading to some concerns about his ability to lead the team. While showing flashes, Jeanty’s effectiveness has been a rollercoaster throughout his rookie season, while his fellow offensive rookies have been extremely quiet. The free agent additions, Cappa and Mostert, have been nonfactors, despite Cappa having spent most of his career as a full-time starter.
But the change that Las Vegas has keyed in on as the biggest factor to the lack of success appears to be the hiring of Kelly, and whether or not he was the key issue at play here, he’s become the latest victim of the Raiders’ quick decision-making. Since the dying days of general manager Reggie McKenzie and head coach Jack Del Rio, stability has been a challenge for staffers in Las Vegas.
Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock became the new established head coach and general manager, respectively, for the team’s transition to Vegas in 2019. In 2020, defensive coordinator Paul Guenther was fired midseason. Gruden resigned five games into the following year, and Mayock and both coordinators were cleaned out at the end of that season. The new head coach (Josh McDaniels), general manager (Dave Ziegler), and offensive coordinator (Mick Lombardi) for the 2022 campaign all only lasted until Halloween of the following year.
That brings us almost up to date to last year, when Pierce, Tom Telesco, and Luke Getsy took over those respective positions. Getsy didn’t even get to finish the year, getting fired after the team’s Week 9 contest last year in a similar late-night November decision. Under yet another new head coach (Carroll) and GM (John Spytek), Kelly lasted just three more weeks than Getsy. And all the while, defensive coordinator Patrick Graham has been learning new names since 2022. The only familiar face Graham had over the past three years was special teams coordinator Tom McMahon, who was let go earlier this month.
There’s been no word yet on who will serve as an interim coordinator. Quarterbacks coach Greg Olson seems to make the most sense, considering he held the position under Gruden from 2018 to 2021. Whatever the case, if the Raiders truly hope to turn this team around in the future, establishing some stability may pay major dividends.
As for Kelly, there may still be some significant interest in his abilities as a playcaller, though the interest may take him back to the world of college football. There is sure to be opportunities for Kelly to land on his feet after briefly dipping his toe back in the NFL waters.

So was Tom watching the game while calling a game?
either way Chip is not an NFL level coach, needs to go back to college. Plenty of OC jobs will be open since he does not want to deal with NIL and HC things now.
Raiders were destined to suck because Geno is not good but average at best. He was top in ints when he had DK, Lockett, and JSN. You give him Bowers and not much else you are asking to suck.
The Raiders have picked 1 offensive lineman since 2018 in the first round and the guy played 21 games before washing out of football… Were they expecting chip kelly to get put there and block? Geno was sacked 10 times. No one can do anything behind that line.
Well, Chip wasn’t any good at calling plays in the pros, so if he could try and block, at least they’d be getting something for the money.
In all seriousness, though, I understand what you’re saying; the offensive line is abysmal. It is tough to find success without a good offensive line. However, Kelly isn’t without blame here. LV has called a pass play on almost 62% of their offensive snaps, the fourth highest rate in the league. That’s a recipe for disaster when you don’t have the personnel for it.
Ehh, I don’t think that it’s primarily Kelly’s fault. The Raiders knew-or should have known-what they were getting. There’s plenty of tape out there. They also knew that they wouldn’t have the personnel to run anything of value this year, and then traded their best receiver.
I complained about some of Kelly’s protections on here last week, and then I watched some more tape of a few drop backs where they weren’t doubling a hot pass rusher who was getting tons of pressures-I realized that there wasn’t anybody left, because the extra blocker on the play was already doubling the other rusher on the other side, and none of the receivers were open. So, Kelly might have failed at his job, but there’s almost literally nothing to work with that another team would be envious of-except the two TEs. Whomever gets the interim job will not have an enviable task, but the only Raiders offense now has basically got to be “Feed Bowers/Mayer” and no real scheme, because they just can’t protect long or get receivers open to do anything complex.
Even if they do, Geno occasionally gets erratic as he gets more desperate for a play, so you have to control how often he gets hit, too…hard to do when your receivers can’t get open on quick release plays or your back can’t make a defense give up rushing yards because of the blocking.
The OL is bad. Geno and Pete are bad. Not sure what they thought would happen. If you casually watched a few games last year you would know the game has passed Pete up. Also that Geno was not the QB from a few years ago. I am thankful Pete built what he did here but he let Wilson run all over him. He broke a great D up because he wanted to appease Russ. You guys got a great guy but as a coach he has not kept up with the game.
Kevin Patullo next.
Please! For the love of the game itself!
All that talent and they don’t push the ball downfield, they don’t stretch the field, they run dink plays, and, when they have a lead, they go full cruise control
The lack of aggressive play calling is stunning with all the weapons they have
BuckarooBanzai • 14 mins ago
and, when they have a lead, they go full cruise control
==================
Wait! Are you telling me that we’ve held a lead this year?
I mean, some of that is quarterback, though. More and more stories come out about Hurts going off script or refusing to try contested or downfield throws. I can’t verify those stories, but I can see a few of the open receivers downfield that aren’t getting the ball in some games.
The garbage collector strike this summer was less putrid than his playcalling.
Not sure why in world they promoted this guy after the brian Johnson hire didn’t work. Hire a real OC that isnt looking to leave for a HC gig after a year. This decision was a season killer.
My thoughts exactly. Basically the offensive coordinator version of Vic.
But at what point does the HC step in and fix things and play call a few games to get things going in the right direction?
As long as Shane Bowen gets dibs after Patullo.
Shedeur looked a lot better than Gabriel out there
For his first start he did really well. Led the offense down the field. Made quick decisions. Improvised at times.
Cleveland needs to play him rest of the season to see what he’s got. No reason to go back to Gabriel as we’ve seen what he can do.
Myles Garrett smiling at the deep throws tells you all you need to know about how the QB situation has gone for Cleveland.
And look, if you’re just gonna bash the kid don’t bother responding. Just shows everyone how miserable of a person you are to actively wanna see a young kid fail in the NFL.
Not going to badmouth Sanders, but what does your comment have to do with the article?
@Sid he is Trying to hop on that Bandwagon.
Browns played the Raiders this week.
Shedeur got his first start
Chip Kelly was fired by the Raiders after the game Shedeur and the Browns won I think 24-10
6 degrees of separation
Ah, got it. Lol
Everyone looks good playing the Raiders.
Apparently not the jets and Justin fields throwing 54 yards losing 27-20
Everyone that’s better than the Raiders.. Which doesn’t include the Jets.
“If you don’t agree with me, it shows you’re a miserable person”…no, framing a comment like you did, shows a miserable person.
He looked better than his first game, but it’s the raiders and a huge portion of the yards came after the catch. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Browns draft another QB this year.
I never said you had to agree with me
I said if you’re just gonna be nasty and miserable and bash the kid hoping he fails don’t bother responding
You can be critical and not be an a hole about it. Totally possible for people to do such, they just choose not to. Called constructive criticism

Bad taste
If I bash on his dad am I a miserable person? Never liked him a giant ego that was afraid to hit. The few big hits he did get were more the Off player hitting him. Now he is running around in his cowboy hat looking like a doofus. Not sure if he has the ego his daddy did his dad was insufferable.
Depends why and how you’re bashing him
Saying “I’m not a huge fan of Deon Sanders. He was a me first player and gave up on plays more often than he should have (afraid to hit)”
Is vastly different than
“Deon is @$$ has always been @$& he is @$$ as a coach was @$$ as a player and his kids are @$$ and will always be @$$ like their dad.”
Again you can be critical of people. You don’t need to be an a hole about it.
Just read through articles about Shedeur sanders since the draft and you’ll be able to tell the difference between the miserable people and the people that actually have stuff worth reading and listening to.
No, you said, “And look, if you’re just gonna bash the kid don’t bother responding. Just shows everyone how miserable of a person you are to actively wanna see a young kid fail in the NFL.”
“Bashing” someone that really hasn’t shown anything does not equal wanting to see him fail. Your post is just saying that people who don’t think and act how you want them to, are miserable people, cuz you said so.
It’s ironic… The cult that defends this kid, no matter what, is far more toxic and creates way more hate towards him, than he does himself.
Read that last sentence again
“…… Just shows everyone how miserable of a person you are to ACTIVELY WANNA SEE A YOUNG KID FAIL IN THE NFL.”
Are you confused by that last sentence or something? Cause I was pretty clear about what makes them a miserable person…..actively rooting for him to fail and do bad.
How many former coaches are currently getting paid by the raiders? Gruden, McDickles, AP, Kelly, McMahon, lord knows who else
wow… unreal list
Davante Adams, Jimmy Garoppolo, Gardner Minshew, Andre James
Antonio Pearce is still getting paid to coach.
I don’t see it in the article but it’s worth mentioning that two of Pete Carroll’s sons are on his staff. One coaches their offensive line, which is horrendous and one of the worst in football. He is also the “Run Game Coordinator”. The Raiders, despite having a great back in Jeanty, can’t run the ball to save their lives.
Carroll’s other son is an assistant QB coach and is in charge of “Game Management”.
Accountability is great when you’re firing Chip Kelly, but maybe root out the nepotism as well. Neither of Carroll’s two sons deserve their jobs with the Raiders.
I don’t think this matters with their positions. Geno is going to be geno and be a qb for a long time. Carrol’s son as assistant qb coach as 0 bearing on anything.
Other son as run game coordinator he has jeanty and he’s not calling plays not much to coordinate for. Now OL coach that is an issue but you don’t have anything to improve this OL.
That’s a bunch of excuses and talk. If they’re not having any effect and there’s nothing they can do to improve anything, then fire them because they’re useless.
Their line has been bad for three straight years. They have drafted one first round OL since 2018, and he lasted 25 games in the league before washing out. Start there. You can’t do anything without an offensive line.
Alex Leatherwood, come on down!
They don’t deserve their jobs? They’ve been coaching their entire adult lives. Brennan Carroll has been coaching over 20 years between USC & Miami (College) and Seattle and Las Vegas (NFL). Nathan Carrol has been coaching for over 10 years in the NFL, including the passing game coordinator for the Panthers, which had nothing to do with his father. Football wasn’t just played in their household, it was lived. But because they share a last name with their dad, they somehow don’t deserve their jobs? I respectfully disagree.
They don’t deserve their jobs because they’re not good at them. Are they the best qualified? Or do they have employment because their last name is Carroll and their father is the coach? Does Steve Belichick deserve his job? Brennan has been with his father at many stops, including his start at USC and his first NFL gig.
If Pete Carroll was never hired for the Raiders job, would Brennan Carroll be their offensive line coach and Run Game Coordinator? This isn’t a family business. It’s the NFL. The Raiders OL is one of the worst in the league and their running game is one of the worst in the league despite a great back in Jeanty. You figure it out.
They’re not good at their jobs? They’re Super Bowl winners!! I don’t know if they’re the most qualified, but you don’t either. You just want to sound tough by saying they don’t deserve their jobs because they have a daddy who also coaches football. I think your comment says a lot about you and not much about the Carroll’s.
Well, at least it’s good for the college teams given how many openings there are.
Cal Bears should get Chip Kelly
That seemed like a mismatch from the start. Pete Carroll loved to run the ball in Seattle, and Chip Kelly did the opposite. Not to mention that their offensive line stinks.
The OLine wasn’t deep to begin but the injuries to Kolton Miller and Jackson Powers-Johnson are killing any pass protection.
does the person who thought it was a good idea to trade a third for geno still have a job ?
Yeah, he calls games these days I think.
Chip Kelly to South Carolina as OC
I thought the Eagles offense was super creative when he was there. Everything was misdirection and outside the pocket.
Imagine that with Josh instead of Nick Foles?
I don’t really think Chip as OC is a realistic solution but Im desperate. Im only theorizing.
True, but also a while back. Kelly hasnt been the same since. If he had just let Jeanty run upright all along … haha
Not to mention his leadership style too.
But I do think there is a creative offensive coordinator in there somewhere. He needs an opportunity on a team with good pieces.
I don’t want that risk.
This has just been a bad year for the receivers more than Brady’s playcalling. Maybe Josh does too much but with the line not as good in pass protection, the offense is off. They will get it together come playoff time like they usually do.
Yeah, the receivers have been bad. Keon Coleman being a huge disappointment doesn’t help, but I would agree that they’re a bigger problem than the plays called for them, if I had to wager.
There are a bunch of people who love writing about Coleman’s personality, but that doesn’t matter much if that personality causes him to miss or be late to practice and then not contribute in games. The Bills have needed a number one for some time, but they could really use help all around in the WR corps.
The Raiders thing to do now would be to hire Hue Jackson as the OC replacement 🙂
That was one of their best offenses the last 20 years when he was OC, so it would make as much sense as anything.
Scapegoating is a tool of the weak-minded. Yet again bad player acquisitions and team building, so they pick the incorrect head to chop.
And guess whose fingerprints are all over this shambles of an NFL club? Tom Brady. Yes, Tom Brady.
Stop drooling Chuck … haha
Still trying to figure out why that imbecile let Reggie go. He had things tracking in the right direction and it’s been a disaster ever since. The team would be somethingnif they just had of let Reggie finish doing his thing.
Gruden said so.
The OC is only as good as the offense he gets. He’s working with an extremely average QB a below average line and I’m guessing average receivers. Kelly was destined to fail. Shoulda just stayed at Ohio State
Hey Pete, could you fire yourself?
1. Firing came late in the season. This team was abysmal for a month already, 4 games less than 10pts.
2. Foolishly selecting both a TE and RB with first picks back to back years was moronic at best vs drafting two stud O linemen. Said it at the time. Can only assume Spytek has no power or is as dumb as prior GM’s. Absolute waste of draft cap.
3. Hire a progressive offensive minded coach and OC for a change. It isn’t that difficult.
4. Sell the team, Mark. Been a complete joke under your watch.
Cya, loser.
Could the Vikings please fire KOC?
Wont happen … he resurrected Darnold’s career.
Would they dare bring back Kirk Cousins?
That’s…very early. O’Connell resurrected Darnold’s career and improved a good quarterback in Cousins to great quarterback when they were together, and in short amount of time. He’s had more success than failure.
I advocated at the time (and still think) that the Vikes should have signed Rodgers for this year. They were much better positioned for a playoff run, Rodgers is playing for cheap, and McCarthy obviously isn’t ready. Add that to O’Connell’s ability to revitalize veteran QBs, and you’re got a good chance at success.
