Latest On Dolphins, Reshad Jones
On Sunday, Dolphins safety Reshad Jones raised eyebrows when he pulled himself out of the game after just ten plays. The decision, as Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald writes, could be extremely costly for Jones.
The Dolphins reserve the right to fine a player for up to four paychecks for conduct detrimental to the team. If the Dolphins bring the hammer down on Jones, that would cost him upwards of $200K while voiding his future guarantees. Per the terms of his five-year, $60MM extension he inked in 2017, that would mean losing out on $35MM in guarantees over the next three years.
That’s one potential outcome. Another potential outcome is an overhaul of the coaching staff that could cost defensive coordinator Matt Burke his job. The Dolphins contained the lowly Jets on Sunday, but the defense allowed 74 points in its previous two games and signs of discord have been apparent all season.
“[Jones] came up and talked to me last night,” head coach Adam Gase said Monday. “He came up to the office and we talked. We’re still kind of going through a couple of things. I need to talk to a couple of people. Me and him are on the same page right now. … I have an idea of a lot of the things that happened.”
Jones’ outburst came after he was told that he would be splitting time at safety. Gase surely isn’t on board with Jones’ actions, but it sounds like he’s not on board with Burke’s game plan either.
Chargers To Cut K Caleb Sturgis
The Chargers will release kicker Caleb Sturgis, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (on Twitter). To replace him, the teams plans to promote Michael Badgley from the practice squad.
The move hardly comes as a surprise after Sturgis missed a field goal and two extra points against the Seahawks on Sunday. It was his first game back from a quad injury, but even before that, he missed three field goals and four extra points.
While Sturgis was out, Badgley nailed all three of his field goal tries and went 7-for-7 on extra points, so they have reason to trust the 23-year-old over the veteran. His first assignment as the team’s “full-time” kicker will come on Sunday against the Raiders.
Despite Sturgis’ struggles, the Chargers pulled out a 25-17 win over the Seahawks. Riding a five game win streak, they now stand at 6-2 and have a real chance at catching the Chiefs for the divisional lead.
Cardinals Re-Sign Kendall Wright
The Cardinals re-signed veteran wide receiver Kendall Wright, according to a team announcement. The Cardinals had two vacant roster spots prior to signing Wright, so no one had to be dropped in order to accommodate the deal.
Wright, a 5’10” veteran receiver, originally signed with the Cardinals on Oct. 8 and was inactive for one game prior to his release ten days later. Wright offers 82 games of NFL experience, but he has probably lost a step or two since his early days with the Titans.
Wright was originally signed in order to bolster the receiving corps while Larry Fitzgerald was dealing with a hamstring injury. After Fitzgerald caught eight passes for 102 yards and a touchdown on Sunday against the 49ers, Arizona is confident about the 35-year-old’s health. This time around, Wright is on the roster to provide overall depth at the position.
With Wright in the fold, the Cardinals have six receivers on the roster as he rejoins Fitzgerald, Christian Kirk, Chad Williams, J.J. Nelson, and Trent Sherfield.
Patriots Sign S Obi Melifonwu
The Patriots have signed safety Obi Melifonwu, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (on Twitter). Melifonwu, a 2017 second-round pick of the Raiders, was waived/injured by Oakland in August. Recently, the Raiders reached an injury settlement with the UConn product, allowing him to sign with another club.
The 24-year-old Melifonwu played sparingly during his rookie campaign, compiling seven tackles in five games (one start). He was placed on IR twice during his first season and didn’t do a whole lot while on the field. Melifonwu also worked out for the Cowboys, Chiefs, and Saints, but he’ll join up with the Patriots instead.
Melifonwu is known for his freakish athleticism and could be a real asset down the stretch if he stays healthy. After Eric Rowe landed on IR with a groin injury, the Patriots could use the additional depth and special teams help that Melifonwu can provide.
Coming off of a 31-17 win over the Packers, the Patriots are now 7-2. On Sunday, they’ll be a heavy favorite when they travel to Nashville to face the Titans.
Giants’ Kyle Lauletta Facing Charges
Sunday, 09:47am: After learning more about this situation, the Giants are fully supporting Lauletta, per Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. La Canfora writes that there was a major backup on Lauletta’s route to the team facility on the day of his arrest, and, scrambling to be there by 8:30am, he disobeyed a police officer on the scene who wanted him to take a lengthy detour. Lauletta concedes that he should have obeyed the directive immediately, but sources say the QB did not act belligerently and he says he never came close to hitting the officer or anyone else. He intends to vigorously fight the criminal charges, and the Giants, who believe Lauletta was honest with them about the situation, still think highly of him.
As such, JLC says Big Blue is still considering pulling Manning in favor of Lauletta, and while Lauletta’s arrest may have altered that timeline a bit, the expectation is that he will be under center at some point this season.
Thursday, 12:42pm: Giants quarterback Kyle Lauletta is facing multiple charges after his run-in with cops on Tuesday morning. The Weehawken (NJ) Police Department announced that Lauletta has been charged with eluding police, obstructing administration of law, and resisting arrest. He’s also facing motor vehicle charges for reckless driving, disregarding an officer’s directions, an improper turn in marked traffic lane, and failure to remain in a marked lane.

The rookie QB was cuffed on his way to practice this week when he failed to obey the directions of an officer and nearly struck police with his car. It was a disappointing incident for the fourth-round pick, particularly since the Giants could be inches away from yanking Eli Manning in favor of other options.
In a radio interview, head coach Pat Shurmur was non-committal when asked about a potential suspension for the youngster. But, at minimum, a fine from the club seems likely and the arrest may delay his opportunity to start in place of Manning.
The lowly 1-7 Giants are on their bye this week. They’ll resume action on Monday Nov. 12 when they face the 49ers.
Cowboys’ David Irving Suffers Injury
Cowboys defensive tackle David Irving says he will not play Monday night due to a high ankle sprain (Twitter link via Clarence Hill of the Star Telegram). He added that the injury could sideline him for up to four weeks.
Irving went down in practice on Thursday and tests confirmed that he’ll need a substantial amount of time to heal. It’s a frustrating development for the 25-year-old, who already missed the first four games while serving a suspension and a fifth game while addressing personal issues. So far this year, Irving has only suited up for games against the Jaguars and Redskins, and he could be looking at a half-season of activity when all is said and done.
Of course, this is a key year for Irving as he is slated to hit unrestricted free agency after the season. Last year, after being moved to defensive tackle full-time, Irving showed his potential by finishing with a career-high seven sacks.
So far, Irving has four total tackles on the year including one sack which he recorded in the third quarter against Washington on Oct. 21.
Jets To Release De’Angelo Henderson
The Jets are releasing running back De’Angelo Henderson, Manish Mehta of the Daily News (on Twitter) hears. That’s a strong indication that fellow tailback Eli McGuire will return to face the Dolphins on Sunday.
Henderson, 26 later this month, was a sixth-round pick of the Broncos last year and appeared in a handful of games as a rookie. He joined the Jets’ practice squad after missing Denver’s final cut and earned a promotion to the main roster after Bilal Powell was lost for the year. He did not see the field against the Bears on Sunday, so his brief Jets stint will end without an official statistic recorded. It stands to reason that the Jets may re-sign him to the practice squad if he clears waivers, however.
The Jets’ primary rusher on Sunday will be Isaiah Crowell with sixth-round pick Trenton Cannon and (probably) McGuire in reserve.
Redskins’ Trent Williams To Miss Time
Redskins left tackle Trent Williams will miss “about a month” after undergoing thumb surgery, ESPN.com’s Dan Graziano (on Twitter) hears. If Willams is sidelined for the next four games, it will mark the third-straight campaign in which he has missed at least a quarter of the regular season.
The six-time Pro Bowler is in the midst of a solid season as he ranks among Pro Football Focus’ Top 15 tackles in the NFL. He’s a beat behind his usual marks with a so-so score for pass blocking that puts him 17th among all qualifying outside linemen, but the 5-2 Redskins will miss his presence as they fight for the divisional crown.
The Redskins’ next four games come against the Falcons, Buccaneers, Texans, and Cowboys. The Bucs, Texans, and Cowboys all boast Top 10 defensive lines, according to Football Outsiders, so it’s not an ideal time for the club to lean on backups such as Ty Nsekhe and third-rounder Geron Christian.
Falcons Sign Josh Harris To Extension
The Falcons have locked up their long snapper for years to come. On Friday, Josh Harris signed a three-year extension that will keep him in Atlanta through the 2021 season.
[RELATED: 2019 NFL Free Agents]
Harris joined the Falcons in 2012 and has been the club’s featured long snapper in every game since except for one. The Georgia native also has seven special teams tackles to his credit.
Harris wasn’t at the top of the team’s offseason to-do list and there are several pending free agents left to be addressed. That group includes running back Tevin Coleman, defensive tackle Grady Jarrett, left guard Andy Levitre, backup quarterback Matt Schaub, defensive end Derrick Shelby, and defensive tackle Terrell McClain.
Agent Drops Saints’ Michael Thomas
Agent David Mulugheta has terminated his relationship with Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas, as Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. The timing is curious since Thomas is poised to sign a substantial extension this offseason.
Thomas and Mulugheta – who represents stars such as Deshaun Watson, Jalen Ramsey, and Earl Thomas – had a “difference of opinions,” Nick Underhill of The Advocate (on Twitter) hears. The divorce marks the second time the receiver has changed agents in three NFL seasons.
Thomas, who won’t turn 26 until March of next year, topped 1,100 yards receiving in each of his first two campaigns. In his seven games this year, he has already racked up 58 catches off of 669 yards and four touchdowns.
The former second-round pick is under contract through next year and will carry a paltry $1.628MM cap number in his walk year. The Saints are expected to lock him up in the offseason, however, before he can even get a whiff of the open market.
