Lions Sign 12 UDFAs, Cut Eight Players

FRIDAY, 10:09am: The Lions have officially signed one more undrafted free agent, inking Robert Morris offensive lineman A.J. Dalton to a contract, tweets Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. Dalton received a $2.5K signing bonus, per Birkett (via Twitter).

MONDAY, 3:45pm: The Lions have signed 11 undrafted free agents to contracts, according to Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com. In order to make room for the new additions, the team also cut eight players: Cornerback Nate Ness, safety Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, tight end Matt Veldman, kicker John Potter, wide receiver Carlin Isles, linebacker Jon Morgan, center Sherman Carter and wide receiver Cody Wilson.

While none of those players was expected to be a real contributor in Detroit this season, there are a couple notable names in the group. Isles is a rugby speedster who was considering coming to camp with the Lions, while Potter had been expected to compete for the kicking job vacated by David Akers.

Extra Points: Cowboys, Matthews, Devaney

Could Mavericks owner Mark Cuban go from the pages of Hoops Rumors to Pro Football Rumors? Don’t bank on it. In an interview with 105.3 The Fan, Cuban was asked if he could see himself buying the Cowboys someday and he didn’t sound like a man ready to break out his checkbook, writes Jon Machota of The Dallas Morning News. “I think football teams have gotten so expensive that it would take a whole consortium, you’d have to put together a whole fund in order to buy them and that wouldn’t be any fun,” Cuban said. “It wouldn’t be any fun because it wouldn’t be my money, it wouldn’t be my team. It would have to be purely a business. That makes it a lot tougher.”

  • Wide receiver Chris Matthews will get a guaranteed $10K bonus on his futures contract with the Seahawks, according to Brian McIntyre (via Twitter). Matthews is one of just a few futures signees to see guaranteed money on their deal.
  • Former Rams GM Billy Devaney is joining the Falcons‘ player personnel department as a regional scout, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (on Twitter). We learned on Valentine’s Day that Atlanta was giving consideration to hiring Devaney, who was previously working as an analyst with ESPN. Former Rams scout Russ Bollinger has also been hired by the Falcons, tweets Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post Dispatch.
  • The Lions signed Rugby speedster Carlin Isles to a reserve/futures contract, but it sounds like he’ll be sticking with his first sport. David Ferguson of The Scotsman writes that Isles, who has recorded a 4.22 40-yard-dash time, will ink a deal with the Glasgow Warriors, keeping him from the NFL.
  • The Dolphins announced that they have canned offensive line coach Jim Turner and longtime head athletics trainer Kevin O’Neill. Both men were named in the Ted Wells report which examined the Dolphins organization following the Richie Incognito/Jonathan Martin controversy.

Lions Links: Suh, Isles, Tillman, Free Agents

The Lions were awarded the first waiver claim of the offseason yesterday, grabbing safety Isa Abdul-Quddus from the Saints. That will be far from the last move in what figures to be a busy winter in Detroit, so let’s check in on a few links examining some of the decisions facing the team….

  • In a column for the Detroit Free Press, Drew Sharp argues that the Lions should move on from Ndamukong Suh, attempting to trade him for draft picks rather than working out a new deal that reduces his $22.4MM cap number for 2014. However, an extension is the likelier outcome. NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports (via Twitter) that the team plans to re-open talks when Suh hires a new agent.
  • Rugby speedster Carlin Isles signed a reserve/futures contract with the Lions a few weeks ago, but is still undecided on whether to pursue an NFL career or to focus on winning 2016 Olympic gold in rugby, according to a CNN report.
  • Asked if he’d consider signing with the Lions as a free agent this offseason, defensive back Charles Tillman acknowledged that it’d probably be “a little awkward in the beginning,” but sounded open to the possibility, writes Kyle Meinke of MLive.com.
  • Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com takes an extended look at all 22 of the Lions’ 2014 free agents.
  • Lions backup QB Shaun Hill is among the team’s unrestricted free agents, and his future will depend on whether he wants a better shot at playing time elsewhere and whether the club’s new coaching staff wants a backup more familiar with its system, as Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com outlines.
