No Charges For Cowboys LB Damien Wilson

Cowboys linebacker Damien Wilson has been cleared of all charges stemming from a July incident in Frisco, Texas (Twitter link via L.P. Phillips of CBS DFW). A grand jury returned two “no bills,” meaning that they have declined to indict him on a second-degree felony and a misdemeanor charge for disorderly conduct.

On July 4th, Wilson was arrested for two counts of aggravated assault with deadly weapon when he allegedly hit a woman with his truck while backing into a parking spot during an argument. The 24-year-old was facing potential jail time for what took place.

Naturally, Wilson could still face league discipline. In theory, a suspension could come down sometime this season now that the legal process on it has wrapped.

Wilson has started in two of the Cowboys’ five games thus far this year. He has just nine tackles in total and the metrics at Pro Football Focus haven’t been all that impressed with him thus far. The linebacker has a 44.3 overall score and is ranked as the No. 62 LB in the NFL out of 87 qualified players. Last year, he earned a decent 74.6 grade.

The 2-3 Cowboys are entering a bye week. They return to action on Oct. 22 to face the Niners in San Francisco.

Cowboys linebacker Damien Wilson has been arrested for two counts of aggravated assault with deadly weapon, as CBS Dallas tweets. Wilson was cuffed on Tuesday night near Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas where MLS soccer team FC Dallas played a game and concluded the evening’s festivities with a fireworks show. The 24-year-old posted bond and has been released from holding.

Wilson has appeared in every possible regular season game for the Cowboys over the past two seasons. Last year, he made a career high five starts and registered 30 total tackles plus half a sack.

Wilson was pushing to be the Cowboys’ starting strongside linebacker for Week 1, but he could now be on shaky ground with the team and the league office. If Wilson’s legal situation drags on, the Cowboys may need to look at external options. There are a handful of notable linebackers remaining on the open market, including former Lion DeAndre Levy.

As first tweeted by agent Mike McCartney, third-round tight end Tyler Kroft has signed his rookie contract with the Bengals. Per Over The Cap, Kroft’s four-year pact will be worth about $2.928MM, including a $648K signing bonus. First-round offensive lineman Cedric Ogbuehi is now the only Cincinnati draftee who remains unsigned.
The Cowboys have also signed all their draft picks besides their first-rounder. According to Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com (Twitter link), the club locked up fourth-round linebacker Damien Wilson today, signing him to a four-year deal that features a signing bonus worth about $466K.
The Jets have cut quarterback Matt Simms, the club announced today in a press release. Given the presence of Ryan Fitzpatrick, Geno Smith, and Bryce Petty, there wasn’t much chance that Simms would make the Jets’ regular season roster. According to Brian Costello of the New York Post (Twitter link), Simms asked New York to release him and the team obliged.
Former Oklahoma defensive back Julian Wilson, who signed with the Ravens as an undrafted free agent, was waived/injured by the team today after breaking his leg earlier this month, tweets Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun. He’ll land on the injured reserve list, assuming he clears waivers.
The Buccaneers made a slight change to the back of their 90-man roster today, signing kicker Brandon Bogotay and waiving center Ben Gottschalk, per Scott Smith of Buccaneers.com (Twitter link).
Washington has added a pair of cornerbacks to its roster, signing Trey Wolfe and Tajh Hasson, per a team release. Hasson went undrafted this year out of UNLV, while Wolfe spent some time on Washington’s taxi squad in 2014.
