Jaguars To Sign DE Dawuane Smoot, WR Trenton Irwin

Dawuane Smoot left Jacksonville for a 2024 Buffalo deal, but as the Bills have retooled at defensive end once again, a reunion will come to pass. The Jaguars are bringing Smoot back, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports.

Now 30, Smoot will join a new Jaguars regime but be part of a familiar position group. Smoot profiles as a rotational rusher behind starters Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker. Additionally, the Jaguars are signing wide receiver Trenton Irwin as part of a continued overhaul at the position. Wide receiver David White Jr. was waived to make room on the roster, per KRPC2’s Aaron Wilson.

Smoot appeared in 11 games (four starts) for the Bills in 2024, typically lining up off the edge with some snaps as an interior rusher. The Jaguars will be hoping he can return to his previous form that yielded 22.5 sacks from 2019 to 2022, but the 30-year-old has only recorded 2.5 sacks and five tackles for loss in the last two years.

Irwin is a former undrafted free agent who spent the first six years of his career in Cincinnati. He only saw seven targets in his first three seasons, but emerged as a rotational contributor in 2022 and 2023, catching 40 of his 55 targets for 547 yards and five touchdowns across those two seasons. In 2024, however, Irwin fell to the bottom of the Bengals’ depth chart and was not re-signed after the season.

The 29-year-old Irwin is the Jaguars’ most experienced receiver by a considerable margin, so he could quickly carve out a role in Liam Coen‘s new offense. Leading receiver Brian Thomas Jr. will continue as the team’s WR1 with No. 2 pick Travis Hunter primarily joining him on offense. Dyami Brown‘s $10MM contract indicates he’ll earn a strong target share as well. Irwin will likely have to compete with 2023 sixth-rounder Parker Washington for tertiary targets, though Washington’s youth and strong finish to the 2024 season may give him a leg up.

White signed with the Jaguars as an undrafted rookie out of Eastern Carolina in 2024 but missed the season after tearing his ACL during spring practices.

The Colts chose Scott in the 2023 fifth round, but they will see him miss a second full season due to injury. Scott suffered a torn Achilles during OTAs last week, per the Indianapolis Star’s Joel Erickson. This marks the second time Scott has gone down before Colts training camp; he sustained an ACL tear during spring workouts last year. The Colts chose Scott 158th overall out of Cal.

Best known for a 12-game Giants tenure that featured two starts in 2022, Anderson found his way to the Colts last year. The team used the young O-lineman in one game and extended him in March. A seventh-round Bills draftee in 2021, Anderson also started a game for the Eagles in 2021.

White suffered a torn ACL during one of the Jaguars’ practices last week, Doug Pederson said recently. The Jags signed White as a UDFA following a career at Western Carolina. White will revert to the Jags’ IR list if unclaimed, with this process generally leading to an injury settlement that moves the player off the team’s roster. White was among five UDFAs receivers the Jags signed this year.

A sixth-round Titans draftee back in 2021, Breeze was most recently with the Texans. He spent the second half of last season on Houston’s practice squad, staying on the AFC South champions’ 16-man unit until season’s end. No reserve/futures contract emerged for the Oregon alum, however. Breeze has played in 11 career games, splitting his career in Tennessee and Detroit.

Jaguars Add 13 UDFAs

Now in Year 3, the Doug Pederson-Trent Baalke partnership has most of its offseason roster in place. The Jaguars agreed to terms with 13 UDFAs. Here is the Jacksonville post-draft group:

A host of small-school options populate the Jags’ list. Two of the four players who do hail from Power 5 programs — Bowman and Carter — respectively transferred from Maine and Western Michigan. Jones spent six years at Oregon, starting 32 games. The 340-pound blocker’s 14-game run at right guard last season drew first-team All-Pac-12 acclaim. Proctor started 20 games for the Buckeyes and participated at the Combine this year. Between his signing bonus and salary guarantee, Proctor is locked into $215K, KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson tweets.

Multiple teams offered Parker around $200K guaranteed, Wilson adds, noting the Jaguars secured his commitment for that amount. Parker transferred from Arkansas in 2022 and earned first-team All-Sun Belt acclaim last season, leading Appalachian State with 114 tackles. The Jags did not draft a linebacker but still roster 2022 third-rounder Chad Muma and 2023 fourth-rounder Ventrell Miller behind starters Foyesade Oluokun and Devin Lloyd.

Ruby will attempt to go from Division III to the NFL; he will do so after being the rare college player to record three 1,000-yard receiving seasons. Ruby’s 2022 at the D-III powerhouse jumps out; the 190-pound wideout totaled 105 receptions for 1,785 yards and 30 touchdown receptions. The 30 TDs were one shy of a D-III record. He followed that up with a second first-team All-American honor last season. Cephus also topped 1,100 yards last season, totaling 1,151 and 10 TDs — en route to first-team All-Conference USA honors — in 2023.

The Jags devoted nearly half their UDFA class to receiver, doing so despite adding Gabe Davis, Devin Duvernay and first-rounder Brian Thomas Jr. this offseason. The Jags also have 2023 sixth-round pick Parker Washington rostered. Competition for practice squad jobs figures to include this batch of UDFAs.
