Ole Miss WR D.K. Metcalf To Enter NFL Draft

Ole Miss wide receiver D.K. Metcalf is going pro. The redshirt sophomore will enter the NFL draft, even though a neck injury ended his 2018 season prematurely.

I had a month to weigh my options,” Metcalf told Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports. “I prayed to God and told Him to put the right decision in me. After meeting with Coach [Matt] Luke, they did everything they could to give me the right information, and I made my choice.”

Metcalf’s true freshman season ended after just two games thanks to a broken foot, but he returned in 2017 to average 16.6 yards per catch and score seven touchdowns. This year, he was averaging 21.9 yards per grab and notched five TDs in seven games before he was shut down for the season.

His injury history will be a concern, but he’s still expected to be among this year’s top draft prospects.

He’s raw, but there’s a lot of upside because he’s so big and talented,” an NFL scout told Yahoo Sports. “He’ll probably go in the second round because he’s so talented. He’s going to kill workouts, and he’s a good kid and football is important to him. I’d be shocked if the health checks out if he lasts past the second round.”

Metcalf says he’ll be ready to fully participate in all football activities on Jan. 22. If he can prove that he’s healthy, the son of former NFL lineman Terrence Metcalf could find himself in the first round mix.

Ravens To Start Lamar Jackson Vs. Raiders

Quarterback Lamar Jackson will make his second career start when the Ravens face the Raiders on Sunday, coach John Harbaugh announced. Joe Flacco hasn’t practiced since injuring his hip against the Steelers on Nov. 4 and was unable to get clearance this week.

Jackson’s first start was a success as the Ravens beat the Bengals 24-21. The Louisville product completed 13-of-19 throws for 150 yards and did serious damage on the ground with 119 yards off of 26 attempts. Jackson could have a field day against Oakland’s depleted front seven and further improve his case to be the team’s QB going forward.

Flacco, the Ravens’ starter for the past eleven seasons, could heal up in time for the Week 13 game against the Falcons, but the position could be filled by then. The rise of Jackson could lead to a difficult offseason decision for the club as Flacco is set to carry a $26.5MM cap number in 2019. The Ravens can save $10.5MM by releasing him, but they’ll be left on the hook for a whopping $16MM.

Giants Sign K Marshall Koehn To P-Squad

The Giants signed kicker Marshall Koehn to the practice squad, per a team announcement. To make room, the club cut tight end Garrett Dickerson from the 10-man unit.

It’s possible that Aldrick Rosas is banged up, but he has not been listed on the injury report in advance of Sunday’s game against the Eagles. The Giants aren’t looking to dump Rosas, who turns 24 next month. Rosas has connected on 95% of his field goal tries this season, which puts him fourth among all qualifying kickers in the NFL, and he has nailed all of his extra point attempts in 2018.

Assuming Rosas is healthy, it’s possible that the Giants are getting an advanced look at Koehn for the offseason. Then again, the Giants can keep Rosas on the cheap in 2019 thanks to his status as an exclusive rights free agent (ERFA), so there’s little need for a Plan B.

Koehn, 26, appeared in his one and only NFL game last year as a member of the Bengals. He spent this past offseason with the Giants and had a three-day stint on their practice squad in October.

Jets’ Sam Darnold To Miss Week 12

Jets quarterback Sam Darnold won’t be able to go in Week 12 against the Patriots, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. With the rookie sidelined, veteran Josh McCown will start once again.

McCown’s last outing against the Bills was one to forget. The 39-year-old completed just 17 of his 34 passes for 150 yards with zero touchdowns against two interceptions as Gang Green lost 41-10.

Of course, it hasn’t been all smooth sailing for the No. 3 overall pick either. Darnold has flashed at times, but he leads the NFL with 14 interceptions and tossed four picks against the Dolphins in Week 9. The 3-7 Jets are pretty much out of playoff contention, so there’s little sense in endangering Darnold as he recovers from a nagging foot injury.

Naturally, the 7-3 Patriots are heavily favored in Sunday’s matchup. The line could skew even further towards New England now that McCown has been confirmed as the club’s starter.

Lions Waive S Don Carey

The Lions waived safety Don Carey on Friday, according to a team announcement. The move will create room for cornerback Marcus Cooper, who was claimed off waivers from the Bears on Thanksgiving

Because the Lions played on Thursday, the addition of Cooper was formally delayed until the next day. Carey was active for this week’s game against Chicago and served as a special teams gunner alongside Charles Washington. Carey had just returned to the Lions on Nov. 20, so his latest stint with the team lasted only a few days.

Carey bounced around the league after being selected in the sixth round of the 2009 draft by the Brown. Later on, the Norfolk State product found a home in Detroit. After signing with the Lions in 2011, Carey proceeded to play the next seven years for the organization. The 31-year-old served as mostly a backup and special teamer during his tenure in Detroit, including a 2017 campaign where he compiled nine tackles and one forced fumble in 13 games.

Cooper is expected to step into Carey’s old role, which means that he’ll serve as a cornerback behind Darius SlayNevin LawsonTeez TaborDeShawn Shead, and Mike Ford.

Redskins’ Cassanova McKinzy Suffers Injury

Redskins linebacker Cassanova McKinzy suffered a torn pectoral muscle in Thursday’s loss to the Cowboys, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). McKinzy was out of football for two years due to injury, so it’s undoubtedly frustrating for the 26-year-old.

McKinzy returned to the Thanksgiving contest after exiting with a shoulder injury, but a torn pec is a far more serious injury. The Redskins will be forced to shut McKinzy down for the year and place him on the injured reserve list this week.

McKinzy, an Auburn product, appeared in three games for the Redskins this year. The club has him under control through next season at a $570K cap number with no guarantees.

Latest On Eagles’ Cornerbacks

The Eagles secondary is beyond banged up. As the team gears up for Sunday’s game against the Giants, Chandon Sullivan, Cre’Von LeBlanc, and DeVante Bausby stand as the team’s only healthy cornerbacks, head coach Doug Pederson says.

Jalen Mills, Rasul Douglas, Avonte Maddox, and Sidney Jones were unable to take the practice field on Friday. It’s a terrible spot for the Eagles to be in after losing star Ronald Darby to a torn ACL.

To fill the gap, the Eagles have employed reserve wide receivers as cornerbacks in practice. That won’t fly in a real game, so the Eagles may have to make a move or two in the next couple of days. Practice squad defensive back Jeremiah McKinnon may be a leading candidate for promotion, but no decision has been made on that front just yet.

At 4-6, the Eagles are fighting for their playoff lives on Sunday. The Giants have been largely atrocious this year, but they’re riding a two-game winning streak and they’ll be motivated to spoil the Eagles’ season.

Jets, Quincy Enunwa Discussing Extension

The Jets and wide receiver Quincy Enunwa are discussing a new deal, according to Manish Mehta of the Daily News. Enunwa is set to hit free agency in March after playing out his one-year, $2.914MM tender.

Enunwa, 26, bounced back from a scary knee injury to lead the Jets in targets (55) and receptions (29) this year. He may also lead the team in receiving yards by the end of the season – he’s only one yard behind Robby Anderson for the top spot.

Before the lost season, Enunwa had 58 catches for 857 yards and four touchdowns, so the Jets know what he’s capable of when fully healthy. With upwards of $100MM in cap space this offseason, the Jets can surely spare a couple of bucks to keep one of their best offensive players.

The Jets have other receivers to consider beyond Enunwa as Jermaine Kearse is a fellow unrestricted free agent and Anderson can be retained with a restricted free agent tender.

Bengals Place Adolphus Washington On IR

Another day, another Bengals player sidelined. This time, it’s defensive lineman Adolphus Washington being shut down for the year due to a knee injury. To take his place on the roster, the Bengals signed defensive tackle Christian Ringo off of the Cowboys practice squad.

Washington was a third-round pick of the Bills in 2016, but didn’t do much during his time in Buffalo. Washington appeared in 15 games (11 starts) as a rookie, compiling 21 tackles and 2.5 sacks. However, the defensive tackle was arrested prior to his sophomore campaign, and the Bills subsequently shopped him for a fifth-round pick. In September, they released him, and he hooked on with the Cowboys practice squad. Soon after, the Bengals inked him to a main roster deal. His Bengals run ends with six tackles and one sack.

With Washington out, the Bengals went back to the Cowboys’ taxi squad once again. Ringo has suited up for 15 games in three NFL seasons and may get a chance to add to his resume in the final games of the 2018 season.

Browns Designate CB Terrance Mitchell For Return

The Browns designated cornerback Terrance Mitchell for return, per a team announcement. Mitchell has not been on the field since suffering a broken wrist in Week 4.

Mitchell took the practice field on Wednesday, but league rules mandate that he must sit out for two more games before seeing live action. He’s the first Browns player designated to return from IR this season.

Mitchell, joined the Browns in March as a free agent and secured a starting job in the team’s revamped secondary. In the first month of the season, he recorded 19 tackles, one interception, three passes defensed, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.

After Mitchell was knocked out of action, E.J. Gaines stepped into his role. Unfortunately, Gaines has since been lost for the season due to multiple concussions, leading to some serious shuffling in the secondary.

After sitting out the next two games against the Bengals and Texans, Mitchell will be eligible to play on Dec. 9 against the Panthers.
