Rams Activate RB Ronnie Rivers From IR
DECEMBER 21: Out for more than two months, Rivers will return to action tonight. The Rams will use one of their IR activations on Rivers, moving him back into position as a Williams sub alongside Freeman. The NFC West team now has one IR activation remaining this season.
DECEMBER 19: The Rams could soon be adding some depth to their backfield. The team announced that they’ve designated running back Ronnie Rivers for return from injured reserve.
After getting into eight games as a rookie, Rivers entered the 2023 campaign as the Rams’ third running back. He appeared in each of the team’s first six games this season, collecting 75 yards from scrimmage on 17 touches. He also saw a significant role on special teams, getting into more than half of his team’s ST snaps through six games.
Rivers suffered a knee sprain back in Week 6 that ultimately required a stint on injured reserve. He was first eligible to return from IR in late-November, so the RB needed at least an additional month of recovery before returning to the field.
The Fresno State product went undrafted in the 2022 draft. He had brief stints with both the Cardinals and Seahawks before landing on the Rams practice squad.
The Rams running back room looks a bit different than when Rivers last played. Kyren Williams is now back from injury and commanding most of the snaps at the position, and fill-ins Zach Evans and Royce Freeman have reverted to their backup roles. The Rams would have to carve out another spot on the depth chart if they want to activate Rivers, although practice-squad RB Darrell Henderson could also argue for a roster spot.
Packers Designate TE Luke Musgrave For Return
Among the brigade of first- or second-year Packers pass catchers, Luke Musgrave has seen his rookie year stalled due to a lacerated kidney. But it does not look like the Packers view it as a season-ending injury.
Green Bay designated Musgrave for return Thursday, The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman tweets. Musgrave is not expected to be activated in time for the Packers’ Week 16 game, per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Tom Silverstein, but the second-round pick is on the way back to close out his rookie year.
Musgrave’s Week 11 injury required a hospital trip. While he was soon released, the Oregon State product needed extensive rehab time. Prior to going down, Musgrave had operated as the Packers’ top tight end. Fellow Day 2 rookie Tucker Kraft has worked in that capacity in the games since. In 10 games this season, Musgrave has 33 receptions for 341 yards and a touchdown.
The Packers drafted Musgrave with the second-round pick they received from the Jets in the Aaron Rodgers trade (No. 42 overall). Part of a deep tight end draft class, Musgrave entered the NFL after having missed most of his senior season with the Beavers due to a knee injury. Musgrave became a rather interesting prospect as a result; his 341 yards this season eclipse any of his college totals. But the Packers put him to work early, letting Robert Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis rejoin ex-assistant Luke Getsy in Chicago.
Jordan Love has shown progress during the season’s second half, forming connections with the Pack’s high number of young wide receivers. All six of Green Bay’s wideouts are in their first or second seasons; all three of its tight ends (Musgrave, Kraft, Ben Sims) are rookies. It will be interesting to see how this group develops, and Musgrave (signed through 2026) is a key component of that plan.
Giants To Place K Randy Bullock On IR
The Giants will end up using at least three primary kickers this season. Brought in to be Graham Gano‘s replacement, Randy Bullock will not make it to the finish line.
Bullock is heading to IR, per ESPN.com’s Jordan Raanan. The veteran kicker sustained a hamstring injury during the Giants’ Week 15 loss to the Saints. This transaction will end Bullock’s season; he kicked in the past six Giants games.
This latest Giants kicker setback will give Cade York another chance. The Giants have the former Browns draftee stashed on their practice squad, putting him in position to resume his career in Week 16. Cut by the Browns after struggling during the preseason, York has not played this season.
In signing Bullock in early November, the Giants also added York off the Titans’ practice squad. That mandated York stay on the roster for at least three weeks. Later last month, the Giants waived the second-year kicker. But he stuck around on Big Blue’s P-squad. The 2022 fourth-round pick will be set for another chance soon. The LSU alum made only 75% of his field goals last season, missing two PATs.
York could be auditioning for another team over the season’s final three weeks. The Giants gave Gano a three-year extension early this season, and although he underwent knee surgery recently, the veteran should remain in place as the team’s kicker for 2024. The Giants could certainly keep York around as offseason insurance, but Gano’s deal includes $13.25MM guaranteed.
Technically, York will be the fourth Giants kicker this year. Punter Jamie Gillan connected on a field goal in relief of Bullock in New Orleans. Bullock, 34, made 5 of 6 field goals — one of those a game-winner over the Packers — and all 10 extra points during his second Giants stint. A one-game Giant fill-in back in 2016, Bullock spent the past two seasons with the Titans. Tennessee released him amid a February payroll purge. Bullock has kicked for seven teams over his 11-year career.
Bills To Place DT Jordan Phillips On IR
Suffering a dislocated wrist in the Bills’ dominant win over the Cowboys, Jordan Phillips expressed hope he could return for a playoff run. If the team is to qualify for the postseason, Phillips will not be available to start that journey.
The Bills are placing the veteran defensive tackle on IR on Thursday, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports. Phillips will be sidelined for the final three regular-season games and Buffalo’s playoff opener, should the team continue its recent form into a postseason berth.
Injuries continue to hinder the Buffalo defense, with Rapoport adding Micah Hyde is not expected to play Saturday against the Chargers. But the Bills received good news this week; starting defensive tackle DaQuan Jones is back at practice despite suffering a torn pectoral muscle earlier this season. Phillips has been the team’s starter in place of Jones, opening the past nine games with the first-stringers. Suffering a neck stinger, Hyde has gotten in two limited practices this week. But the Bills will be cautious with a key veteran who missed almost all of last season with a neck injury.
Phillips became part of a Bills D-tackle plan involving only experienced veterans. This offseason, the three-time reigning AFC East champs brought back Phillips on a one-year, $3MM deal. The team also extended Ed Oliver and signed Poona Ford to be part of a group featuring 2022 UFA additions Jones and Tim Settle. While Settle and Ford have starting experience, the Bills have turned to Phillips — who is on stint No. 3 with the team — in Jones’ place over the past two months.
A former second-round Dolphins pick, Phillips reignited his career in Buffalo during the late 2010s. The Bills claimed Phillips in 2018, and re-signed him on a one-year, $4.5MM deal for the ’19 season. That proved pivotal. Phillips parlayed a career year (9.5 sacks) into a three-year, $30MM Cardinals deal. Injuries marred the Arizona pact, but after the team cut him in 2022, the veteran made his way back to Buffalo. Phillips, 31, is now on his fourth Bills contract.
The team’s continued interest in extending this partnership aside, Pro Football Focus has viewed Phillips as one of the NFL’s worst D-tackles this season. Citing Phillips’ run defense as a concern, PFF grades him as the league’s second-worst DT regular this year. Phillips has registered 2.5 sacks, two tackles for loss and five pass batdowns this year. Settle has played the third-most snaps among Bills DTs this season, while Ford — a Seahawks starter from 2019-22 — has not seen much playing time.
Jones returning would certainly help the Bills, but they still have an experienced interior D-line contingent without him. The Bills have until Jan. 9 to activate Jones, who was off to a strong start before going down in early October.
Lions Open Practice Window For S C.J. Gardner-Johnson
After a strong showing with the Super Bowl runner-up Eagles last season, safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was considered a significant free agent addition for the Lions back in March. Unfortunately for both parties, Gardner-Johnson only made two starts in Detroit before being placed on injured reserve. Three months later, Gardner-Johnson is finally nearing a return to the active roster, with the Lions officially designating him to return from IR today, per Lions senior writer Tim Twentyman. 
Gardner-Johnson found himself on IR so shortly into the regular season after he suffered a torn pectoral muscle. Initially, a full tear was feared, which usually results in a season-ending diagnosis. While things weren’t “looking good” early, the door has remained open all these weeks later for his return. Almost a week ago, the team announced that the veteran defensive back had been medically cleared to return to play.
Gardner-Johnson was not the only member of Detroit’s secondary to be lost for a significant amount of time. Not long after the team lost Gardner-Johnson early in the season, cornerback Emmanuel Moseley suffered his second ACL tear in as many years. Rookie second-round pick Brian Branch has combined with Cameron Sutton to hold down the cornerbacks group. In Gardner-Johnson’s place, Tracy Walker and Ifeatu Melifonwu have combined to fill a starting role alongside Kerby Joseph.
Now that he’s officially been designated to return, Gardner-Johnson has a 21-day window in which he can practice and eventually be activated off of IR. If he is unable to make a return to the active roster within the three-week period, he will be returned to IR and be unable to be activated during the 2023 season.
Steelers S Damontae Kazee Suspended For Remainder Of Season
DECEMBER 20: Kazee’s appeal of his season-long suspension has been deemed successful, at least partially. According to NFL senior vice president of football & international communications Michael Signora, while James Thrash, the hearing officer jointly appointed to the case by the NFL and the NFL Players Association, upheld Kazee’s suspension for the remainder of the regular season, he also ruled that Kazee would be eligible to return to the active roster if the Steelers were to qualify for the postseason. If Pittsburgh fails to make the playoffs, then we have seen the last of Kazee in the 2023 NFL season.
DECEMBER 18: The Steelers will be without Damontae Kazee for the rest of the 2023 campaign, regardless of if the team makes it to the playoffs. The veteran safety has been suspended for the remainder of the year, as noted by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. 
Kazee was ejected for a hit on Colts wideout Michael Pittman Jr. on Saturday. Pittman is now in concussion protocol after Kazee’s most recent hit which was penalized for unnecessary roughness. The 30-year-old’s history in that department was noted in the press release detailing the suspension, and his second season with the Steelers is now set to come to a premature end.
Kazee could appeal the ban, one which will see him miss games against the Bengals, Seahawks and Ravens. Having lost three straight games, the Steelers are in a much worse position for the playoffs than they were recently. Pittsburgh could still manage to secure a wild-card berth, though, in which case Kazee’s absence would be acutely felt.
The former Falcons fifth-rounder has seen a much larger workload in 2023 than last season. Kazee’s defensive snap share (81%) is the third-highest of his career, and he has been a productive player on the backend. The San Diego State product has posted 61 tackles, two interceptions, three pass deflections and two fumble recoveries this year. Especially with Minkah Fitzpatrick set to miss at least Week 16, Kazee’s loss will deal a blow to Pittsburgh’s secondary.
Mark Kaboly of The Athletic reports that Kazee will indeed appeal the suspension. Regardless of how much time he misses, he has already lost over $267K in fines overt the course of the season, a figure which will increase unless the ban is rescinded altogether. A best-case scenario for Kazee and the Steelers, realistically, would involve the suspension being reduced to a degree.
Broncos safety Kareem Jackson managed to appeal a four-game suspension down to two earlier in the season, but he has since been hit with another four-game ban. This marks Kazee’s first suspension of the season, but his accumulation of discipline from the league (which includes five fines for unnecessary roughness) will no doubt be a factor in the appeals process. While it will interesting to see if he manages to see the field again in 2023, Kazee figures to be out of the lineup for the time being.

Jets To Activate Aaron Rodgers From IR
After a few reports indicated Aaron Rodgers‘ comeback bid would fall short, the Jets quarterback also poured cold water on his long-rumored effort to return from a Week 1 Achilles tear. But the Jets will still keep their preferred starter at practice.
The Jets will activate Rodgers from IR today, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports. This is somewhat of a procedural move, with no game action expected. But it will also allow Rodgers to keep practicing with the team to close out the season. Robert Saleh confirmed Wednesday that Rodgers will be moved back to the 53-man roster, noting the team considers more practice work part of the QB’s rehab.
With the Jets designating Rodgers for return on Nov. 29, Wednesday marked the activation deadline. Had the team not activated Rodgers, he would have reverted to season-ending IR and been shut down. Saleh said (via NFL.com’s Mike Garafolo) Rodgers will not play again this season, confirming what the 40-year-old passer said during his latest Pat McAfee Show appearance. But the third-year HC added that Rodgers would have undoubtedly pushed to come back had the Jets not been eliminated from playoff contention.
Rodgers’ activation leaves the Jets with two IR-return moves remaining, but with the team’s eye on 2024 already, it will use one of the spots to keep its expected ’24 starter at work with teammates. Rodgers expects to not only play in 2024 — his long-held goal upon being traded to the Jets — but to stay for the ’25 season as well. Even though this has been a historically woeful season for the Jets’ offense, Rodgers practice work looks likely to be relevant for next year.
The Jets look unlikely to make major changes to their staff in 2024. This is due in large part to Rodgers’ preference for the Saleh-Joe Douglas–Nathaniel Hackett group. The four-time MVP endorsed each Tuesday. While staying the course will be unpopular with many Jets fans, Rodgers undeniably has tremendous sway in how the organization functions at present. Rodgers was “90% retired” weeks before being traded, and the Packers QB had flirted with retirement during his final Packers years. The Jets may not want to risk rocking the boat here. Keeping Hackett around will ensure Rodgers returns to the same offense in 2024.
Hackett being set to keep his job due to a close relationship with Rodgers (from their three years together in Green Bay) might be a difficult sell for many, considering this season comes on the heels of a historically bad Broncos HC tenure. Hackett has offered a brutal two-year sample as a play-caller, after a successful run as a non-play-calling OC with the Packers. Though, the Jets’ dependence on Zach Wilson doomed Hackett this season. That said, the Jets are worse offensively than they were before Mike LaFleur‘s exit. The Jets rank last in offensive DVOA, holding back another strong defense. After refusing to upgrade on Wilson during the offseason or once Rodgers went down, this fate was not difficult to envision.
Wilson remains in concussion protocol, but the disappointing third-year QB will remain the starter if he is cleared in time for Week 16. Trevor Siemian replaced Wilson against the Dolphins. Wilson is unlikely to be with the Jets beyond this season.
Jets Place DL Quinton Jefferson On IR
Quinton Jefferson is done for the season. The Jets have placed the veteran defensive tackle on injured reserve, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini. To fill the open roster spot, the Jets have signed defensive lineman Jalyn Holmes to the active roster.
Jefferson will miss the rest of the campaign with a hip issue. It’s uncertain exactly when the defensive lineman suffered the injury, but he was limited to a season-low 11 defensive snaps this past weekend.
The 30-year-old joined the Jets this past offseason on a one-year deal. He ended up starting all 14 of his appearances with his new squad, compiling a career-high 6.5 sacks to go along with 34 tackles and one forced fumble. Pro Football Focus only graded Jefferson 96th among 132 qualifying interior defenders, although the site did give him a positive grade for his pass rushing.
The former fifth-round pick has had multiple stints with the Seahawks over the years, including a 17-game run with the organization in 2022. In 103 career games, Jefferson has compiled 26.5 sacks.
Holmes joined the Jets back in August before ultimately earning a spot on the practice squad. He’s earned a pair of promotions this season, collecting a single tackle in two games. The former fourth-round pick got into 25 games with the Vikings through his first three seasons in the NFL.
