Cardinals punter Blake Gillikin appeared on the injury report with a back injury in Week 2 but has been otherwise healthy without missing any game time throughout the season so far. Gillikin showed back up on Arizona’s injury report yesterday with his back ailing him once again. He didn’t participate in practice at all today, and it doesn’t look good for his chances on Sunday that the team signed O’Donnell.
Following the Colts’ signing of Michael Badgley on Tuesday, O’Donnell becomes the second veteran specialist out of Miami (FL) to get signed out of free agency this week. O’Donnell punted for the Bears for eight years after Chicago drafted him in the sixth-round in 2014. He spent one year after Chicago with the Packers but remained a free agent throughout the 2023 season. Last year, he got a similar call from the 49ers, who held on to him for eight games after Mitch Wishnowsky was sidelined for the second half of the season with a back injury.
O’Donnell won out in a punting competition with fellow free agents Jack Browning and Matt Haack.

Patriots RB Antonio Gibson Suffers Torn ACL
The Patriots improved to 3-2 with last night’s win in Buffalo. The team will be shorthanded on offense for the remainder of the season, though. 
Antonio Gibson suffered an ACL tear on Sunday, as first reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Gibson was quickly ruled out of last night’s game after suffering the injury. Further testing took place today, including an MRI. The results confirm Gibson will be sidelined the rest of the way.
That news marks a notable blow to New England’s rushing attack. Gibson had been chipping in as a part-time contributor on offense in 2025, similar to last season. The 27-year-old’s statline for the year will include 112 scrimmage yards and one touchdown, a far cry from his high-end campaigns at the beginning of his career with Washington. Gibson is under contract through 2026.
None of the former third-rounder’s salary for next year ($2.85MM) is guaranteed, however. Especially in the wake of today’s injury news, Gibson’s time in New England could very well come to an end this spring as a result. In any case, the team will now need to move forward with Rhamondre Stevenson and second-round rookie TreVeyon Henderson leading the way in terms of backfield usage.
Stevenson has struggled with fumbles during his career, and while he has not been benched as a result his snap share for 2025 stands at 55%. That marks the lowest usage rate since his rookie campaign. Things could of course change in the wake of Gibson going down, but Henderson also represents a candidate for an uptick in carries moving forward. The Ohio State product has recorded double-digit carries only once in a game to date; it will be interesting to see if that changes in the near future.
Gibson topped 1,000 scrimmage yards during each of the first two seasons of his career, scoring 21 total touchdowns over that span. The Memphis product appeared to be on track for a lengthy RB1 stint in the nation’s capital, but after a downturn in usage over the final two years of his rookie pact he departed on the open market. Another trip to free agency could be in store relatively soon, and given this injury finding a lucrative pact will be a challenge.
49ers, Rams, Seahawks, Bills, Patriots, Jaguars, Eagles Seen As Possible Buyers At Trade Deadline
We are a month away from the November 4 trade deadline, and the league’s contingent of buyers and sellers is starting to take shape. Eric D. Williams of Fox Sports identifies a handful of teams that league sources believe could be active buyers.
That includes a trio of NFC West clubs: the 49ers, Rams, and Seahawks. All three of those teams currently sport winning records, and even the division’s fourth-place outfit, the Cardinals, are 2-2 (their two losses have come by a combined four points). It therefore stands to reason that the combatants in what could be a tightly-contested division will be seeking any possible advantage at the deadline.
Moving over to the AFC East, Williams’ sources name the Bills and Patriots as potential buyers. The Bills, who have become a perennial contender in the Josh Allen era, are just one of two undefeated teams left after the first four weeks of the campaign, and Buffalo may be on the lookout for upgrades as it tries to break through to the Super Bowl after a number of recent postseason heartbreaks.
New England, at 2-2, was not necessarily expected to contend this year. New head coach Mike Vrabel and second-year quarterback Drake Maye presented reasons for optimism in Foxborough, but the general consensus was that the club — which underwent more than 50% roster turnover from 2024-25 and which entered the regular season as the league’s fifth-youngest team (h/t ESPN’s Mike Reiss) — was still at least a year away from true competitiveness.
And that still may be the case. After all, much can change between now and the first week of November, and even tonight’s matchup with the division-rival Bills could go a long way towards solidifying the Pats’ status as legitimate contender or otherwise.
After a last-second loss to the Bengals in Week 2, the Jaguars bounced back with victories over the Texans and Niners to improve their record to 3-1. As Williams notes, the rookie GM/HC duo of James Gladstone and Liam Coen both cut their NFL teeth with the Rams, whose Les Snead/Sean McVay operation has developed a reputation for making bold strikes.
Ditto Eagles GM Howie Roseman, and Philadelphia – the league’s other undefeated club – is unsurprisingly named by Williams’ sources as another team that could look to acquire talent in advance of the deadline. Per OverTheCap.com, the Eagles also have just shy of $12MM in cap space, so they should have the flexibility to make a move or two.
The Patriots, 49ers, and Seahawks are all in the top-five in terms of cap room as of the time of this writing, and the Rams are just outside the top-10. The Bills, with just $2.57MM of space, could have a harder time making a splash acquisition.
Patriots Activate Jahlani Tavai From IR
The Patriots announced that they have activated linebacker Jahlani Tavai from injured reserve. Tavai will make his season debut against the division-rival Bills on Sunday.
Tavai, who missed the first four games after suffering a calf injury over the summer, earned a prominent role in New England over the past couple of years. A former Lions second-round pick, Tavai found himself on waivers after two seasons. The Patriots scooped him up prior to the 2021 campaign in a move that has worked out for both sides.
Before last season began, the Patriots signed Tavai to a three-year, $15MM contract extension. He then started in 16 of 17 games, finished second among Patriots defenders in snaps, and piled up 100-plus tackles (a team-high 115) for the second straight year.
Tavai will be playing his first game under new head coach Mike Vrabel and his staff on Sunday. With Vrabel at the helm, newcomer Robert Spillane has taken over as the Patriots’ snaps leader at linebacker. Tavai could be an important cog alongside him, though, especially considering the struggles of fellow linebacker Christian Elliss. While Elliss has played 59 percent of defensive snaps this year, Pro Football Focus ranks his performance 127th out of 132 qualifiers at his position.
Patriots Open Practice Window For LB Jahlani Tavai
Four games have passed and the flurry of teams preparing to bring back injured players continues. The Patriots have joined the fray, opening the 21-day practice window for linebacker Jahlani Tavai, per Chad Graff of The Athletic.
Waived after only two years in Detroit, the former second-round pick out of Hawai’i has found a place in the NFL as far away from his alma mater as possible. After clearing waivers, Tavai signed to the Patriots’ practice squad. He was quickly signed to the team’s 53-man roster where he played in 13 games, mostly as a special teamer. Starting the 2022 season as a backup, Tavai found himself in the starting lineup by Week 5.
Partway through his first season as a starter for the Patriots, Tavai landed a two-year, $4.4MM extension. After finishing second on the team with 110 total tackles in his first full season as a starter, New England added another three-year extension for $15MM, and Tavai rewarded their faith by leading the team in tackles with 115.
So far this season, last year’s starter next to Tavai, Christian Elliss, has been starting next to offseason addition Robert Spillane, but Elliss has looked like a shell of himself, unable to maintain the product he was putting on the field in 2024. The Patriots will hope to bring Tavai back soon, at which point he will likely push Elliss into more of a rotational role as he reassumes his starting spot next to Spillane.
Tavai will have three weeks of practice activity to be activated from injured reserve. After suffering a calf injury at the opening of the season, Tavai has always been aiming for a Week 5 return, and today’s transaction will put him on track for it. On the off chance that Tavai is not able to be activated within the 21-day period, he will be reverted back to IR without the ability to be activated this season.
Patriots Notes: Williams, Tavai, Ownership
Milton Williams earned the largest contract of the 2025 offseason, with his $104MM in total value and $63MM in guaranteed money pacing the class. The financials obviously played a big role in the defensive lineman ultimately joining the Patriots, although Williams recently admitted that the presence of newly hired head coach Mike Vrabel was the true deciding factor.
“I wanted to be under Vrabel,” Williams said (via ESPN’s Mike Reiss). “He played in this league. He knows what D-line looks like. I could pick his brain for anything I could add to my game to make me a better player. This scheme fits exactly my play style, being aggressive up front.”
There were rumblings that Williams was destined for the Panthers before the Patriots swooped in at the eleventh hour. After handing the veteran the most lucrative contract in franchise history (in terms of AAV), New England was clearly hoping their acquisition could anchor their defense. So far, Williams has lived up to the bargain, as he’s totaled a pair of sacks and five tackles for loss in his first four games with the organization.
Williams garnered his contract following a successful run with the Eagles. The defensive tackle was often deployed as a rotational option, with the former third-round pick topping out at 501 defensive snaps played in 2024 (which represented less than half of his team’s total defensive snaps). There were some questions if Williams would be capable of transitioning into a near-full-time role with the Patriots, and he hasn’t had an issue staying on the field for his new club. Through four games, Williams has appeared in a career-high 68 percent of his team’s defensive snaps.
As the organization looks to continue building off a 2-2 start, they’ll be getting some defensive reinforcement. After cornerback Christian Gonzalez made his season debut this past weekend, the team will soon welcome back linebacker Jahlani Tavai. The veteran landed on IR with a calf injury to begin the season and is now eligible to be activated. According to Reiss, a Week 5 return has been the player’s target throughout his rehab.
Tavai provided a bit of stability for the Patriots over the past few years. He averaged 112 tackles per season between 2023 and 2024, although he may be hard pressed to reach those levels in 2025. He’ll be joining a deeper inside linebackers corps that’s currently led by Robert Spillane and Christian Elliss.
The organization is also staying busy off the field. Kurt Badenhausen, Eben Novy-Williams, and Scott Soshnick of Sportico recently reported that Robert Kraft agreed to sell a minority stake in his franchise. The buyers are Sixth Street (3 percent) and Dean Metropoulos (5 percent), and the Kraft family will continue to own about 90 percent of the team. The funds are intended to be reinvested into the team and won’t be used to finance the New England Revolution, the Kraft family’s MLS club.
Notably, this stake in the franchise represents a valuation of $9 billion. Per Sportico, that would be the second-richest valuation for a franchise in NFL history, with a recent Giants stake equaling a $10 billion valuation. The league recently allowed a select list of private equity firms to purchase small chunks of NFL teams.

With Colts cornerback Kenny Moore presumed to potentially miss a few weeks, the recent signee, Hilton, will get his opportunity to supplement the team’s secondary. He may be able to earn an official spot on the 53-man roster with an impactful game. Similarly, Cropper may be able to get into his first NFL game since going undrafted in 2023 as he gets elevated to a receiving corps that will sorely miss CeeDee Lamb.
Morris is getting called up for the third time for Jacksonville. If the Jaguars intend for him to appear in another game after this week, they’ll need to sign him to the 53-man roster.
