Ryan Quigley

Minor NFL Transactions: 5/23/16

Today’s minor moves:

  • The Colts announced that they’ve signed second-round safety T.J. Green. Green, a Clemson product, was selected 57th overall in last month’s draft, and while he played safety in college, there’s been some chatter that he could be moved to corner in the NFL.

Earlier updates:

  • The Vikings have signed defensive tackle Travis Raciti and waived running back Brandon Ross, Matt Vensel of the Star-Tribune tweets. Raciti spent his first NFL season in Philadelphia on the club’s practice squad. The former San Jose State Spartan played in 49 games (45 starts) as a defensive tackle and twice earned all-conference honors.
  • The Eagles have signed defensive tackle Derrick Lott and released punter Ryan Quigley, as Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer tweets. With Quigley out of the picture, it would appear that Donnie Jones has won the team’s punter job. Lott was on Tampa Bay’s taxi squad in 2015 and will try to make the cut in Philly.
  • The Saints have waived long-snapper Chris Highland, who joined the team for his second stint earlier this month (Twitter link via Evan Woodbery of The Times Picayune).
  • Panthers tight end Jake McGee has reverted to injured reserve after being waived-injured, Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle tweets. McGee began his career at Virginia but, thanks to graduate transfer rules, was able to finish up at Florida. In what would have been his first year at UF, he broke his left leg and spent the year rehabbing instead of playing. Last year, McGee caught 41 passes for 381 yards and four touchdowns.

Eagles Sign Ryan Quigley

The Eagles have added some competition at the punter position, according to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, who tweets that Ryan Quigley has signed a one-year contract with the club. The Eagles have since officially confirmed the move.Ryan Quigley

Quigley, 26, has been the Jets’ punter for the last three seasons, but was eligible for restricted free agency last month, and Gang Green opted not to tender him a contract. In 2015, Quigley’s 36.5 net yards per punt ranked second-last in the NFL among the league’s starting punters. He also ranked among the NFL’s worst punters in terms of overall return yardage (432 yards) and yards per return (12.7).

Conversely, Donnie Jones, the Eagles’ starting punter, had a solid 41.6 net yardage average on his attempts, good for sixth in the NFL, and limited opposing returners to 5.1 yards per attempts, which ranked third.

Based on the two punters’ performances, it seems unlikely that Quigley would supplant Jones as the starter in Philadelphia, but he’ll provide some competition in camp, and would represent a cheaper alternative if Jones struggles or gets injured.

Minor NFL Transactions: 3/10/16

Today’s minor moves from around the NFL:

  • The Cardinals have re-signed tight end Ifeanyi Momah, tweets Howard Balzer of The SportsXchange. Momah survived Arizona’s preseason roster cuts in 2015, but suffered a torn meniscus before Week 1, ending his season. Momah received an ERFA tender from the Cards last week.
  • Corey Fuller signed his exclusive-rights tender with the Lions, Wilson tweets. Fuller caught four passes for 76 yards last season after posting 212 yards on 14 receptions in 2014.
  • A Saints cog from 2012-14, tackle Bryce Harris re-signed with the Falcons, his 2015 employer, according to Evan Woodberry of NOLA.com (on Twitter). The former UDFA played in two games for the Falcons last season.
  • The Cardinals cut wide receiver Damond Powell with a non-football injury designation, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle tweets.

Earlier updates:

  • The Cowboys have re-signed cornerback Josh Thomas to a one-year contract, says Todd Archer of ESPN.com. Thomas, originally selected in the fifth round of the 2011 draft by the Cowboys, rejoined the team at the end of last season. In between his two stints in Dallas, he played 51 regular-season contests for the Panthers, Lions, Colts, Jets, and Seahawks.
  • Tight end Zach Sudfeld has re-signed with the Jets, agent Jason Bernstein tweets. Manish Mehta of the Daily News (on Twitter) adds that it is a one-year deal. Sudfeld was a restricted free agent, so his new deal will presumably be for less than the low-round tender of $1.671MM.
  • The Chiefs announced (on Twitter) that they have signed defensive lineman David King and linebacker Efe Obada.
  • The Dolphins have re-signed linebacker James-Michael Johnson, per Howard Balzer of USA Today Sports (on Twitter).
  • The Chargers re-signed ERFA guard Kenny Wiggins, Balzer tweets.
  • The Jets will not tender an offer to punter Ryan Quigley, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com tweets.

Jets Sign Steve Weatherford

2:20pm: The Jets announced the move (on Twitter) and also waived/injured safety Jaiquawn Jarrett. The 26-year-old’s played in 34 games with the Jets the past three seasons, including four this year as a backup. He previously played with the Eagles after arriving in Philadelphia as a second-round pick in 2011.

A Jets free agent acquisition in 2013 who re-signed as a restricted free agent this offseason on a one-year tender worth $1.54MM, Jarrett backed up 2015 signee Marcus Gilchrist at free safety before suffering a knee injury.

11:08am: With Ryan Quigley struggling through a shin injury, the Jets are expected to sign veteran punter Steve Weatherford, reports ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (via Twitter). It’s uncertain if the move is temporary, as Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News wonders (via Twitter) if Weatherford will only stick around for this weekend’s game against the Patriots.

Weatherford had spent the previous four seasons with the Giants, appearing in all 64 games. The veteran and his $2MM salary were let go by the Giants at the end of the preseason. Prior to his tenure with the G-Men, the 32-year-old spent a couple seasons with the Jets, as well as time with the Jaguars, Chiefs and Saints. Weatherford has averaged 44.5 yards per punt throughout his career.

Quigley joined the Jets in 2013 following a one-season stint with the Bears. The Boston College product has compiled 172 punts over his two-plus seasons with the Jets, averaging 45.3 yards per punt.

Jets Cut Bruce Campbell, Six Others

The Jets have started slimming down their roster, as Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the team has cut seven players today (via Twitter):

The notable name here is Campbell, who has had a tumultuous career since entering the league in 2010. The former fourth-rounder spent two season with the Raiders before being traded to the Panthers in the Mike Goodson trade. He was waived by the team around this time last year and caught on with the Redskins in March. However, that deal was voided after he failed his physical, and he ultimately signed with the Jets earlier this month.

Also of note is the release of punter Jacob Schum. The release of Schum would lead many to assume that Ryan Quigley has won the punter job. ESPN.com’s Rich Cimini warns that it may be too early to make that assumption, saying the release doesn’t indicate that Quigley “is in the clear just yet” (via Twitter).
