NFL Recommends Coaching Candidates

Each year, the NFL’s Career Development Advisory Panel releases a list of candidates for head coaching jobs. According to Mike Lombardi of The Ringer (Twitter link), that list includes: Josh McDaniels (Vertical)

  • Dan Campbell (Assistant Head Coach/TE coach, Saints)
  • Jim Bob Cooter (Offensive Coordinator, Lions)
  • John DeFilippo (Quarterbacks Coach, Eagles)
  • George Edwards (Defensive Coordinator, Vikings)
  • Josh McDaniels (Offensive Coordinator, Patriots)
  • Matt Nagy (Offensive Coordinator, Chiefs)
  • Matt Patricia (Defensive Coordinator, Patriots)
  • Jim Schwartz (Defensive Coordinator, Eagles)
  • Pat Shurmur (Offensive Coordinator, Vikings)
  • Dave Toub (Special Teams Coach, Chiefs)
  • Steve Wilks (Defensive Coordinator, Panthers)
  • Mike Vrabel (Defensive Coordinator, Texans)

McDaniels, of course, comes with previous head coaching experience. He was probably too young to handle those responsibilities in Denver, but he has reasserted himself as an offensive wunderkind. Both McDaniels and Patricia will be hot candidates for head coaching jobs this year, so the Patriots may have to make serious changes on the coaching staff.

There is some overlap with the list of minority candidates recommended by the Fritz Pollard Alliance, though Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin and Titans offensive coordinator Terry Robiskie did not make the cut on this list. Austin received head coaching interviews in each of the last two offseasons, so he seems likely to garner some consideration this time around.

Sounds like someone NYG would go for. He did play there.

Would like the Titans to drop Mularkey and bring in McDaniels or Jim Bob! Especially since Robinson has worked with and knows McDaniels

When McDaniels leaves again he’s going to Detroit. Could be even as soon as this February. He said himself he wants a GM he’s comfortable with (Bob Quinn) and a QB he can work and win with (Stafford)

Titans can have Cooter all day.

No Todd Haley? Not sure how much more he can do with an offense to earn another shot. I mean if Hue Jackson can get a 2nd chance why not Haley?

Advisory panel!! Stupid. How about there is a job open and teams just interview and choose. Kind of like with any other open job in the county

Lol there’s nothing stupid or wrong with a panel releasing a list of assistant coaches who they are recommending. Teams don’t have to follow this list, it just acts as a list of recommendations that a team with an opening could choose to select from.

Or you could sit in an interview and talk about how you’re awesome enough to have made a fancy list.

I think Vic Fangio should get a shit at HC sometimes. Players seem really respect the guy and he gets the most out of what he’s got. Not sure if he will do a good job coaching a team but I would like to see him at least have the chance to in the near future. I also am a fan of Jim Schwartz, would like to see him get another shot at it. Maybe with the G-Men or the Colts.

Rumor has it Arians night leave AZ after this season so I wouldn’t be surprised if he went to coach the Colts after they fire their coach at the end of the season. Either way I see him taking a new job in the next year or too.

I know people are in love with his name but I just don’t get the hype for Jim Bob Cooter. The Lions offense is the most one dimensional in the league, Stafford carries that team on his back and gets killed out there for it. If I was another team with a QB less talented and tough than Stafford I don’t know if I’d trust Cooter to develop a well balanced offense.

Lions will fire Caldwell which gives the wonder kid his first selection not inherited. The New England boy will chase Josh McDaniels for sure. Having STAFFORD locked up and he’s a top 10 QB is better than most would hope for so count it as a lock.
