Redskins’ Jonathan Allen Out 3-4 Weeks

Redskins rookie Jonathan Allen has a Lisfranc sprain will be out for three or four weeks, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter) hears. Allen, a first-round pick, has been starting on the defensive line, moving between end and nose tackle. Jonathan Allen (vertical)

Allen, an Alabama product, was regarded by many as a top five talent in this year’s class. However, on draft night, he slipped all the way to Washington at No. 17 thanks to his medical history. The foot injury, however, appears to be a new one. In college, Allen was plagued by arthritic shoulder pain.

Through five games this year, Allen has ten tackles and one sack. Pro Football Focus has him categorized as an interior defender and he ranked No. 32 in that group of 122 qualified players.

As a senior in 2016, Allen had 69 tackles, including 16 tackles for a loss. He also had 10.5 sacks, nearly matching his 12 sack total from 2015.

Steelers’ Bryant Denies Trade Demand

Martavis Bryant had only two catches on Sunday, but he found himself in the news when it was reported that he demanded a trade. Soon after, Bryant took to Twitter to say that he is “happy to be a Steeler.” On Monday morning, he specifically denied making a trade request (Twitter link via Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette). There’s no way to know for sure whether Bryant’s camp did request a trade, but either way it sounds like things have been patched up between the two sides. Bryant’s main gripe was that his role has been downsized in the Steelers’ offense. Starting on Sunday’s game against the Bengals, we may see that change.

Bryant has shown the ability to pick up yards after the catch and at 6’4″ he is also able to pull down passes in the end zone, even in traffic. Between 2014 and 2015, Bryant had 14 touchdowns. Through six games this year, however, he has only one score.

Even if Bryant does push for a deal between now and the deadline, the Steelers do not seem inclined to trade him.

Redskins Meet With CB Nolan Carroll

Free agent cornerback Nolan Carroll is working out or the Redskins on Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter) hears. Carroll was released by the rival Cowboys last week. Nolan Carroll (vertical)

The Cowboys signed Carroll to a lucrative three-year deal this offseason, but he did not appear to be a great fit in the summer and a Week 2 concussion sidelined him for multiple games. Dallas decided to cut ties with him after Week 5, a move that meant eating $4MM in guaranteed salary.

Carroll, 30, started in all 16 games for the first time in his career last year and managed one interception, ten passes defensed, and a forced fumble for the Eagles. Pro Football Focus graded him as the NFL’s No. 92 cornerback among 112 qualifiers, but not every evaluator agrees with that assessment.

The Redskins’ secondary has been ravaged by injuries this season. On Sunday, starters Josh Norman and Deshazor Everett did not dress while Bashaud Breeland, Fabian Moreau, D.J. Swearinger, and Stefan McClure all suffered injuries during the game.

If Carroll is healthy, he would be a logical addition for D.C. He might also be able to provide the Redskins with some intel in advance of their Oct. 29 game against Dallas.

Saints Work Out Khiry Robinson

Days after shaking up their running back depth chart, the Saints are looking into some reinforcements. New Orleans worked out old friend Khiry Robinson on Monday, according to Nick Underhill of The Advocate (on Twitter). Khiry Robinson

The bulk of Robinson’s NFL experience has been with the Saints and he enjoyed best season with New Orleans in 2014. In that year, he had 362 rushing yards and three touchdowns off of 76 carries plus eight receptions for 63 yards.

Robinson hooked on with the Jets in 2016, but it proved to be a jinxed season. First, the running back broke his leg during the Jets’ preseason finale. Then, he returned to the field in December only to injure his leg yet again in his first game back.

If Robinson is healthy, coach Sean Payton & Co. may look to sign him as a backup to top runners Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara. Currently, UDFA Trey Edmunds is serving as the team’s No. 3 RB.

Packers To Promote QB Joe Callahan

The Packers have agreed to sign practice squad quarterback Joe Callahan to the 53-man roster, Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel tweets. For now, he’s slated to serve as Brett Hundley‘s backup. Joe Callahan

The Packers, of course, will be without Aaron Rodgers for an extended period after he suffered a broken collarbone. Even after losing one of the league’s best quarterbacks, it’s not clear whether the Packers will seriously explore outside options. The Packers have always been big on their philosophy of promoting from within and they may feel that Hundley is better suited for the task than a veteran quarterback who does not know the playbook.

Hundley, a fifth round pick in the 2015 draft, attempted just 11 NFL passes before Sunday’s game. He’s now quadrupled that total with 44 attempts.

Callahan, 24, first joined the Packers as an undrafted free agent in the spring of 2016. He has yet to play in an NFL game, but he has gotten a taste of life on the fringes of the NFL after being released and claimed a couple times over. He had brief stints with the Browns and Saints before circling back to Green Bay last December.

Vikings’ Teddy Bridgewater Cleared To Practice

Teddy Bridgewater will soon be able to return to the field. The Vikings quarterback has been cleared to practice, Chris Mortensen of ESPN.com hears (on Twitter). He got the green light from the very same doctor who performed the surgery on his dislocated knee. Teddy Bridgewater (vertical)

Bridgewater suffered a gruesome knee injury last August and missed the entirety of the 2016 season. At the time of the injury, it wasn’t certain when he would return or even if he would able to. After more than a year of difficult rehab work, Bridgewater is on the verge of being able to play.

Whether Bridgewater actually gets to see the field this season will depend on a few factors. Vikings starter Sam Bradford has been sidelined for the last game-and-a-half with a knee injury, but backup Case Keenum has proven to be a capable fill-in. If Bradford returns to full health or Keenum continues to roll, Bridgewater might not get the chance to take the field in 2017. However, he could be called upon if one or both QBs cannot get the job done.

Bridgewater will begin practicing on Wednesday. If the Vikings take Bridgewater off the PUP list, they will trigger a three-week window before having to decide whether to place him on the active roster or park him on injured reserve. Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter) hears that the team expects to activate him this week or next week.

Steelers Unlikely To Trade Martavis Bryant?

Martavis Bryant wants the Steelers to trade him. But that doesn’t mean they will. Early indications are that the Steelers do not plan on moving the wide receiver, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com (on Twitter) hears. Martavis Bryant (vertical)

Bryant has been frustrated with the size of his role thus far in 2017. Still, the Steelers value him highly. Bryant has proven to be a valuable complement to Antonio Brown, as evidenced by his career 16.6 yards per catch average. Trouble is, he has only 17 catches for 231 yards and one score through six games this year. The 25-year-old (26 in December) is currently on pace for less grabs, yards, and TDs than he had in 2015, and he played in only eleven games that year.

The Steelers, who are now 4-2 after topping the Chiefs on Sunday, seem determined to move forward with Bryant, even if he has soured on them somewhat. Ultimately, Bryant’s trade demand could spark offensive coordinator Todd Haley and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to send more passes in his direction.

Latest On Giants, DRC

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie‘s “indefinite” suspension may soon come to an end. Giants head coach Ben McAdoo tells NBC’s Al Michaels that he will meet with the cornerback on Monday (Twitter links via Dan Duggan of NJ.com). Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (vertical)

McAdoo also explained that DRC had four separate incidents before the suspension went into effect last week. The coach did not get into specifics, but based on a previous report, we have a pretty good idea of what went down. Cromartie walked out of a team activity last Friday, stormed off the field during last Sunday’s loss to the Chargers, and bailed on a defensive meeting on Wednesday before the ban finally came down. Perhaps we’ll learn about incident No. 4 at a later date.

Despite the Giants’ early season struggles, Rodgers-Cromartie was doing alright through five games. DRC still ranks as a starting-caliber corner in the eyes of Pro Football Focus with a quality 80.3 overall score. That’s down from his best work, but, regardless, the Giants need him on the field in order to rack up some Ws.

If Cromartie is reinstated this week, as expected, he’ll be able to suit up against the Seahawks on Sunday at the Meadowlands.

Steelers’ Martavis Bryant Requests Trade

Martavis Bryant wants out of Pittsburgh. The wide receiver recently requested a trade, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com hears (Twitter link). Rapoport adds that his teammates and coaches are “well aware that he’s unhappy.” Martavis Bryant (vertical)

Bryant was suspended for all of last season after repeated violations of the substance abuse policy. The league granted him full reinstatement in September, allowing him to get back to work with the Steelers. However, he found that his role was downsized this season. After just two catches on Sunday, Bryant is itching to get more targets elsewhere.

Bryant, 25, has only appeared in 27 out of 54 possible regular season games over the course of his career, but he has been productive in his limited action. Heading into this week’s game against the Chiefs, he boasted a career average of 17.3 yards per catch over the last three years.

If the Steelers want to grant Bryant’s request, they’ll have to move quick. The NFL’s trade deadline is on Oct. 31.

Jameis Winston To Undergo MRI

Jameis Winston left Sunday’s Buccaneers-Cardinals game during the first half with a shoulder injury, and the Tampa Bay starter will undergo an MRI to determine the severity of this setback, Roy Cummings of FanRag Sports reports (on Twitter).

The third-year quarterback went in for X-rays during the Bucs’ road defeat, and Dirk Koetter revealed those were negative. Still, the team will put its quarterback through an MRI to determine how long Winston will be out — if he misses any time at all. Winston has not missed a start since debuting in Week 1 of the 2015 season.

A Chandler Jones hit caused this shoulder damage, and Koetter said (via Jenna Laine of ESPN.com) he was surprised Winston stayed in the game. Winston later departed, but Koetter doesn’t believe Winston hurt his shoulder more by continuing to play.

Ryan Fitzpatrick took over for Winston and guided the Bucs to a more respectable defeat after the Cardinals skated to a 31-0 lead. The Bucs do not have a third quarterback on their active roster. Ryan Griffin resides on IR after suffering a preseason injury.
