Falcons Were Outbid For Sloter

Sunday NFL Transactions: NFC South

Listed below are the Sunday roster moves for the four NFC South teams. Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline yesterday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters, claiming players off waivers or signing guys who clear waivers. Those transactions for the Falcons, Panthers, Saints, and Buccaneers are noted below.

Additionally, as of 12:00pm CT today, teams can begin constructing their 10-man practice squads. You can check out our glossary entry on practice squads to brush up on those changes, as well as all the other guidelines that govern the 10-man units, whose players practice with the team but aren’t eligible to suit up on Sundays.

Falcons Cut 14 Players

The Falcons are letting some players walk early as they get ready for the 53-man deadline on Saturday. The team announced the following cuts:

Taylor, a former sixth-round pick, is the son of Fred Taylor, the greatest running back in Jaguars franchise history. The Falcons picked him up in August after he was discarded by the Chiefs.

The Falcons will only carry two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution tweets, so it appears that Matt Simms will follow Torgersen out the door at some point.

Broncos Trade Ty Sambrailo To Falcons

The Broncos have traded offensive tackle Ty Sambrailo to the Falcons for a 2018 fifth-round pick, a source tells Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (on Twitter). "<strong

Sambrailo is the third notable offensive tackle to be traded for a fifth-round pick this week. The Browns got the ball rolling when they sent former FSU standout Cameron Erving to the Chiefs. The next day, the Lions shipped Laken Tomlinson to the Niners for a 2019 fifth-rounder. Erving and Tomlinson were both former first-round picks. Sambrailo was a second-round choice.

Sambrailo was fighting for his roster spot this year and, apparently, he didn’t do enough in camp to prove worthy of significant playing time. This year, the Broncos spent a first-rounder on tackle Garett Bolles and added Menelik Watson on a three-year, $18.3MM deal in free agency.

Sambrailo projects to be the Falcons’ first swing tackle off the bench, ahead of August addition Austin Pasztor. Rookie Sean Harlow and second-year man Wes Schweitzer will be the primary support for starting guards for Andy Levitre and Ben Garland.

Falcons Make Two Moves

Atlanta Falcons

Reggie Davis Fighting For Spot

  • D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution looked at who is on the Falcons‘ roster bubble as the deadline approaches. The wide receiver group is one to watch as Justin Hardy, Nick Williams, and undrafted free agent Reggie Davis duke it out for one or possibly two spots. Through the preseason thus far, Davis leads the team with 114 receiving yards. However, coach Dan Quinn wants to find out if he can serve as a gunner on punt coverage. Meanwhile, as the Falcons look to replace Jalen Collins in the No. 4 cornerback role, CJ. Goodwin seems to have the leg up on Deji Olatoye and Akeem King. Former third-round pick Blidi Wreh-Wilson is among those listed as a longshot.
