Chiefs Hosting Kerwynn Williams For Visit
The Chiefs are bringing in free-agent running back Kerwynn Williams for a visit, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). Williams started in six games for the Cardinals last season as part of the replacement contingent for David Johnson.
It was the most starts for Williams in his five-year career. He posted a career-best 426 yards rushing last season and averaged 3.6 yards per carry. The Colts originally took Williams in the seventh round of the 2013 draft out of Utah State and he also spent time with the Chargers before signing with the Cardinals in 2014.
If signed, Williams would mark the second addition to the Chiefs backfield this offseason through free agency. They signed Damien Williams to a one-year, $1.5MM deal in late March.
Both would likely back up Kareem Hunt, who had a breakout rookie season for the Chiefs after being taken in the third round of last year’s draft and rushed for 1,327 yards and eight touchdowns. The team also has Spencer Ware, Charcandrick West and Akeem Hunt on the roster. The Chiefs also re-signed De’Anthony Thomas to a one-year $880K deal. t
The Chiefs signed wide receiver Sammy Watkins to a three-year deal as well to serve as another weapon for second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Chiefs Promote Dave Toub To AHC
Chiefs assistant Dave Toub has been given a new title. Toub will continue as the team’s special teams coordinator while also serving as the club’s Assistant Head Coach.
“Dave has had the opportunity to work with our team on both sides of the football, on the field and in the classroom,” Reid said. “His leadership qualities have entrusted me to promote him to Assistant Head Coach.”
Toub has been the team’s special teams coordinator since 2013. Since then, his name has surfaced as a possible head coaching candidate. The new title – and likely pay bump – may help the Chiefs to ward off other interested suitors down the line.
Since Toub has run KC’s special teams operation, the Chiefs have had ten special teams returns for touchdowns, the most in the NFL over that span. In 2013, they set a new NFL watermark in a single season with 29.9 yards per kick return. Before joining Andy Reid‘s staff, Toub worked with the Bears and Eagles.
Chiefs Worked Out Sharrod Neasman
Some assorted notes from around the NFL:
- The Chiefs worked out safety Sharrod Neasman on Wednesday, as Charean Williams of PFT writes. Neasman was with Atlanta for the last two years but was non-tendered this offseason. The 26-year-old appeared in eleven games last season and played mostly on special teams.
- In an attempt to get younger, the Packers may look to “revamp” the right side of their offensive line, writes ESPN.com’s Rob Demovsky. Jahri Evans could decide to retire, and Green Bay may be wary of keeping Bryan Bulaga and his $7.9MM cap hit, especially after a pair of ACL reconstructions. As Demovsky points out, the team could hand one of those spots to 25-year-old Justin McCray, but they could look for upgrades on their other options, including Jason Spriggs and Kyle Murphy.
- Stedman Bailey sat down with Bleacher Report’s Tyler Dunne in a must-read interview. The former Rams wideout discussed his recovery after being shot in the head back in 2015, and he also talked about this attempt at a NFL comeback. “The attitude I have, I would think teams would want me around other guys and help motivate them,” Bailey said. “I can look at guys now and say: ‘Listen, man. The s–t’s not hard. I’ve been shot before. Let’s go out here and go get it.’ Motivation to where people say: ‘You know what, he’s f–king right. What can’t I do?'”
- The Raiders were already looking at punter options before releasing Marquette King. Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal tweets that special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia “privately worked out” Texas punter Michael Dickson and Alabama punter JK Scott.
Minor NFL Transactions: 4/5/18
Today’s minor moves:
Kansas City Chiefs
- Waived: RB George Atkinson
Minnesota Vikings
- Signed: WR Tavarres King
New Orleans Saints
- Re-signed: LB Michael Mauti
Chiefs Sign DB Robert Golden
Robert Golden has signed with the Chiefs, Mark Kaboly of The Athletic tweets. The defensive back has been on the market ever since being released by the Steelers in March.
The Steelers dropped Golden in order to save $1.5MM against the salary cap. For the Chiefs, he’ll serve as a cheap reinforcement in the secondary after the departures of cornerbacks Terrance Mitchell and Phillip Gaines and the possible loss of free agent Kenneth Acker. The Chiefs’ new look cornerback group will be headlined by former Redskin Kendall Fuller and February free agent pickup David Amerson. Steven Nelson, Keith Reaser, and Will Redmond are also slated to return as reserves. Meanwhile, Golden will also see some action at safety (behind starters Eric Berry and Daniel Sorensen) and special teams.
Golden, 27, spent his entire six-year career with the Steelers until he was cut last month. In 2017, Golden appeared in all 16 games, posting 11 tackles and one interception in that time.
Colts Meet With CB Kenneth Acker
Former Chiefs and 49ers cornerback Kenneth Acker visited the Colts on Tuesday, Field Yates of ESPN.com tweets. Acker could help to provide support in what is a very thin positional group.
The Colts re-signed corner Pierre Desir this season, but they watched Rashaan Melvin leave in free agency to join up with the Raiders. Replacing Melvin won’t be easy. The former undrafted free agent started in all ten of his games last season and graded out as a top 20 cornerback, per the advanced metrics at Pro Football Focus. Acker probably would not profile a starter for Indianapolis, but he could offer depth from the bench. The Seahawks also have some interest in him.
In other Colts news, GM Chris Ballard recently discussed the team’s offseason, which has not been as headline-grabbing as other teams in the AFC.
CB Mike Hughes Generating Interest From Several Teams
Cornerback Mike Hughes is generating a lot of interest headed into the draft. Tony Pauline of DraftAnalyst.com writes that the UCF product met with the Panthers and Saints yesterday at the school’s pro day. The prospect is also set to visit the Bears, Eagles, Vikings, Packers, Buccaneers, and Chiefs, and he’ll meet again with Carolina.
During the pro day, Hughes ultimately “stood on his combine numbers,” but the defensive back did do several drills (including fielding punts). The general consensus was that the prospect looked better yesterday than he did at the NFL Combine.
Hughes, who is currently ranked 18th in NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah‘s listing of the top-50 free agents, had a breakout campaign in 2017. After playing in only 10 games with North Carolina between 2015 and 2016, Hughes appeared in 13 games with UCF last season. He ultimately finished the campaign with 37 tackles, 0.5 sacks, and four interceptions.
Considering the Panthers met with Hughes yesterday and plan on hosting him for a visit, we can only assume that the organization has serious interest in the prospect. Even with Ross Cockrell now in the mix, the team is apparently still seeking reinforcement at the cornerback position.
Minor NFL Transactions: 3/30/18
Today’s minor moves:
Kansas City Chiefs
- Signed: WR Nelson Spruce
Chiefs Sign QB Matt McGloin
The Chiefs have signed quarterback Matt McGloin, according to a team announcement. The club also added wide receiver Nelson Spruce.
McGloin spent time with the Eagles and Texans in 2017 but never saw the field. Before that, “Moxy” spent four years with the Raiders and made seven starts.
The Penn State product currently slots as the team’s No. 3 QB behind starter Patrick Mahomes and backup Chad Henne. There’s still a long way to go between now and the start of the season, however, so there’s no guarantee that McGloin will make the final cut.
Chiefs Held Private Workout For Kansas Pass Rusher Dorance Armstrong Jr.
- The Chiefs, along with the Titans and Texans, hosted Kansas pass rusher Dorance Armstrong Jr. for a visit, per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle (on Twitter). Though he played as a 4-3 defensive end in college, Wilson notes he’s likely destined to work as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme in the NFL. Armstrong is projected to go as early as the third round in the upcoming draft.
