Raiders’ Roster Takes Shape

Despite surpassing Trent Richardson on the depth chart, Michael Dyer couldn’t complete his ascent into regular-season action with the Raiders.

Instead, Oakland rejiggered its depth chart by bringing Taiwan Jones, a former running back, back to his original spot from corner, where he played previously. Jones now occupies the third-string spot behind Latavius Murray and Roy Helu, as the Raiders announced the waiving of Dyer and others in order to dice their roster down to 53.

In addition to severing ties with Christian Ponder, Oakland released Kris Durham and defensive lineman C.J. Wilson.

Minor Moves: Wednesday

Here are today’s minor transactions from around the NFL:

  • We learned yesterday that the Raiders have officially secured all five of their restricted free agents, and Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun tweets today that the team has locked up its exclusive rights free agents as well. Rival clubs couldn’t make a play for those ERFAs, so there wasn’t much suspense about whether or not they’d be returning to Oakland. Defensive end Denico Autry, tight end Brian Leonhardt, tackle Matt McCants, fullback Jamize Olawale, and cornerback Neiko Thorpe are now under contract.
  • Cornerback Antwon Blake, who received the low-end RFA tender from the Steelers last month, has officially signed that tender, according to Wilson (via Twitter). Blake will return to Pittsburgh on a one-year deal for 2015 worth $1.542MM.
  • Former Texans and Bears defensive lineman Amobi Okoye has been released by the Cowboys, tweets Adam Caplan of ESPN.com. Okoye appeared in 87 games between 2007 and 2012 before he was sidelined by a medical issue, and had been attempting to make it back to the NFL — if he intends to continue his comeback attempt, it looks like it’ll have to happen with another team.
  • The Packers have cut tackle Aaron Adams with a failed physical designation, per Weston Hodkiewicz of the Green Bay Press-Gazette (Twitter link). The former Kentucky lineman tore his ACL and MCL during training camp last year and missed the entire 2014 season.

Minor Moves: Wednesday

As teams prepare for the final weekend of the 2014 regular season, we’ll round up Wednesday’s minor roster moves in this space, with the latest transactions added to the top of the list throughout the day:

  • The Raiders announced a series of roster moves. The team placed tight end Brian Leonhardt on the IR and activated defensive end Shelby Harris to take his place. The Raiders also added kicker/punter Michael Palardy to the practice squad.

Earlier updates:

  • Filling the final open spot on their 53-man roster, the Vikings have signed running back Henry Josey from off of the Jaguars’ practice squad, tweets Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com. Josey, who has spent the entire season on Jacksonville’s practice squad, will replace veteran back Ben Tate, whom the Vikings released yesterday.
  • Long snapper Charley Hughlett has signed a three-year contract with the Browns, according to his agent Brett Tessler (via Twitter). While Tessler indicates that the signing is official, the team has yet to formally announce it, and will need to make a corresponding move to make room for Hughlett. Johnny Manziel could be headed to IR, but the team also reportedly intends to activate defensive lineman John Hughes, so a second move will be required.

Raiders Promote Scott Simonson

The Raiders have promoted tight end Scott Simonson to their active roster from the practice squad, reports Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle (via Twitter). The team placed safety Jonathan Dowling on injured reserve in order to make room for Simonson.

The team was looking forward to a different transaction, as they were hoping receiver Rod Streater would be activated from injured reserve-designated to return in time for this week’s matchup with the 49ers, according to Tafur (via Twitter). Streater should be back with the team next week.

While Simonson’s promotion may not have been a surprise, it is interesting that the team did not place tight end Brian Leonhardt on injured reserve, writes Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune (via Twitter). Leonhardt suffered two concussions in the past two weeks, leaving the remainder of his season in jeopardy.

There is a chance that move comes next week, when the team gets Streater back. At that time, the Raiders will need to open up a roster spot in order to get him back on the field. McDonald was waiting to see if that would happen this week as well (via Twitter).
