Charles Tuaau

Minor NFL Transactions: 6/16/16

The Vikings waived linebacker Travis Lewis and defensive tackle Bruce Gaston, the club announced. Lewis was with Detroit from 2012 through 2015 before signing with Minnesota this offseason. He actually started four games last season, but for the most part he’s been a backup, appearing in 42 contests during his four-year career. Lewis was a key member of Detroit’s special teams unit, playing on more than 70% of Detroit’s ST snaps, and that’s the role he was expected to play in Minnesota. Instead, the Vikings will carry $50K in dead money on their 2016 salary cap as a result of having given Lewis a signing bonus.

The latest minor moves on this palindromic day:

  • Former fourth-round quarterback Logan Thomas has been waived by his second organization, as the Dolphins cut him loose earlier today, along with defensive tackle Charles Tuaau, Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald tweets. Thomas spent the 2014 season with the Cardinals before they too deemed Thomas too raw for the NFL.
  • The Jaguars signed punter Ryan Quigley and wide receiver Shane Wynn while waiving safety Craig Loston, cornerback Rashaad Reynolds, and defensive end Quanterus Smith, according to Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Quigley was on the Eagles’ offseason roster for a little over a month earlier this offseason.
  • The Bears are expected to sign defensive lineman Marquis Jackson, the twin brother of Malik Jackson, reports Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune (Twitter link). Chicago has also waived defensive lineman Kenton Adeyemi and linebacker Don Cherry, Jeff Dickerson of ESPN.com tweets.
  • After a tryout yesterday, the Chiefs have signed wide receiver Seantavius Jones, per Evan Woodbery of NOLA.com (Twitter link), adding that Kansas City also inked defensive Akeem Davis.
  • Defensive lineman James DeLoach has been cut by the Lions, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press (Twitter link).
  • The Bengals have waived undrafted linebacker Gionni Paul, Paul Dehner Jr. of the Cincinnati Enquirer tweets.

Minor NFL Transactions: 1/14/16

Here are today’s minor signings, cuts, and other moves:

  • The Chiefs signed defensive backs Keith Lewis and Deveron Carr to reserve/futures contracts, as Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle notes (via Twitter). Teams still alive in the postseason like the Chiefs are free to sign futures deals, but can’t do them yet for players on their practice squad.
  • The Eagles have signed tight end Chris Pantale, who spend most of the season on the team’s practice squad, to a reserve/futures contract, tweets Wilson.
  • The Dolphins have signed offensive lineman Charles Tuaau to a reserve/futures deal, tweets Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald. Tuaau, an undrafted rookie in 2015, spent the summer with the Chiefs but didn’t make the team’s regular-season roster.
  • The Patriots cut guard Torrian Wilson and re-signed wide receiver DeAndre Carter to their practice squad, Wilson tweets.
  • As first reported by Wilson at the National Football Post, Washington has signed edge defender Willie Jefferson to a reserve/futures contract. Jefferson had 24 tackles and six sacks for the CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos in 2015.
  • The Colts signed defensive end Eze Obiora to a reserve/futures deal, Wilson tweets.

Chiefs Cut 11 Players

We learned yesterday that the Chiefs had cut guard Marcus Reed, tight end Adam Schiltz, and cornerback Kenneth Penny. Adam Teicher of ESPN.com tweets that the team has also cut the following eight players, bringing their roster down to 79. Kansas City must be down to 75 players by Tuesday afternoon:

  • WR Kenny Cook
  • T Anthony Dima
  • LS Andrew East
  • CB Aaron Hester
  • DE Vaughn Martin
  • WR Jeret Smith
  • OL Charles Tuaau
  • WR L’Damian Washington

As Teicher adds in a separate tweet, East’s release indicates that the team has settled (for now, at least) on James Winchester as its long snapper. Winchester has never served as a long snapper in a regular season game.

Chiefs Sign Marcus Peters

The Chiefs announced that they have signed three rookies, including two of their draft picks from this year’s class. First-round cornerback Marcus Peters, third-round cornerback Steven Nelson, and undrafted free agent defensive tackle Charles Tuaau are all under contract with KC.

Peters, 22, was selected with the No. 18 overall pick in the draft. The former Washington star has undeniable talent, but some teams stayed away from him due to perceived attitude issues. While at Washington last season, he was suspended one game for acting out on the sidelines after committing a personal foul. However, assuming that he can stay on the right track in terms of his temper, he figures have a bright future at the cornerback position. Mike Mayock of the NFL Network noted that Peters possesses great size for the position in his pre-draft profile on the player.

Nelson, an Oregon State product, was a two-year starter after transferring from junior college. Last season he racked up 60 total tackles, two interceptions, and 10 past deflections across 12 games. Nelson was selected with the 98th overall pick in this year’s draft.
