Riley Leonard

Colts Draft QB Riley Leonard At No. 189

The early-sixth-round run on quarterbacks continues. The Colts are set to select Notre Dame’s Riley Leonard at No. 189 overall. Leonard will follow his national championship game opponent (Will Howard) and Syracuse’s Kyle McCord off the board early in the round.

Chris Ballard and Shane Steichen had identified Leonard as a target early during the pre-draft process, per Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz, coming into draft weekend high on the former Fighting Irish starter’s athleticism and processing ability. Leonard certainly showed dual-threat capabilities during Notre Dame’s run to the CFP title game, and he will join two mobile QBs — Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones — in Indianapolis.

Before heading to Notre Dame, Leonard spent three seasons at Duke, earning the starting job as a sophomore. With lesser surrounding talent on the Blue Devils, Leonard still won nine games, throwing 20 touchdowns to only six interceptions, while rushing for 13 more scores. His 2023 season, which preceded his move to the state of Indiana, was cut short by ankle and foot injuries, but he played in all 16 games for the Fighting Irish in 2024.

Leonard nearly reached 1,000 rushing yards last season, totaling 906 to go with 17 touchdowns on the ground. Suddenly, Jones is the third-best rushing threat in his new position group. Leonard posted a 66.7% completion rate, throwing 21 touchdown passes compared to eight interceptions during the team’s charge toward the Ohio State matchup. While Notre Dame was unable to overcome the favored Big Ten program, Leonard leading the team to that stage capped off a breakout season.

Not mentioned as a potential Shedeur Sanders team, the Colts using a sixth-round pick on a QB certainly points to the Richardson-Jones competition deciding the team’s Week 1 starter. Leonard will step into place as a developmental option for a Colts team that no longer rosters Sam Ehlinger. The former sixth-round Colts draftee is now with the Broncos. Jason Bean, a 2024 UDFA, entered draft weekend as the Colts’ third-string option.

Steelers Have No Timeline For Aaron Rodgers Deal, Still Exploring Other QBs

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said that the team has no exact timeline to sign Aaron Rodgers, per team writer Dale Lolley.

Training camp, however, would be a “line of demarcation,” per ESPN’s Brooke Pryor. At that point, not having a quarterback in place would hinder the team’s ability to build chemistry and cohesiveness before the season.

Pittsburgh’s public pursuit of the four-time MVP has not advanced past a six-hour visit on March 21. Tomlin said that the two sides were focused on getting to know each other during the meeting. He also did not rule out another addition to a Steelers quarterback room that currently features two players – Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson – who have combined for 21 career starts.

“We’re still evaluating the acquisition of a guy at the position, whether it’s in free agency and/or the draft,” said Tomlin (via Lolley).

Rodgers is the only starting-caliber quarterback available in free agency, but the Steelers could explore trading for Kirk Cousins after the draft. That would likely be predicated on Pittsburgh not picking a quarterback in the first round of April’s draft. The team currently holds the No. 21 pick, where top quarterback prospects Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders are not expected to be available.

The Steelers have been scouting the rest of the 2025 quarterback class, including Notre Dame’s Riley Leonard, Ohio State’s Will Howard, and Texas’ Quinn Ewers. Tomlin and general manager Omar Khan visited all three schools’ pro days in recent weeks, per Mike DeFabo of The Athletic.

Tomlin also acknowledged the possibility of entering the season with Rudolph as the starter.

“I think that’s why we reacquired him. We like Mason Rudolph, but you know, that’s no secret,” he said (via DeFabo).

Draft Rumors: Carter, Walker, Miami, Loveland

The NFL Scouting Combine starts tomorrow, February 27, and will continue through Sunday, March 2. In a prospect pool that has been reportedly devoid of top-end talent but full of starters and contributors, the combine will be a prime opportunity for players to display their most impressive attributes and stand out.

One of the few elite players in the class who does not need to display anything at the combine, Penn State pass rusher Abdul Carter will reportedly not be working out this weekend, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Carter is still recovering from a shoulder injury he suffered in the team’s playoff game versus Boise State, an injury he played through against the Fighting Irish in the following round of the 12-team playoff.

Per Turron Davenport, also of ESPN, Carter claims to be at about 90 percent. Carter’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has sent a letter to all NFL teams informing them that his client has been cleared to resume training and will be cleared to workout in time for his pro day on March 28.

Here are a few other draft and combine rumors before the event starts tomorrow:

  • Similarly, Georgia linebacker Jalon Walker will not be working out at the combine, per ESPN’s Katherine Terrell. He is currently working his way back from a quad injury. He plans to workout at his school’s pro day, as well.
  • We’ve already heard that Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders will not throw at the combine, choosing to focus solely on team interviews, but Jaxson Dart (Ole Miss), Jalen Milroe (Alabama), and Riley Leonard (Notre Dame) will all reportedly throw this weekend, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. A determination has not yet been made for Miami passer Cam Ward, who is expected to challenge for the top pick in the draft with Carter and Sanders.
  • One of Ward’s top targets in Coral Gables, tight end Elijah Arroyo, will unfortunately not be participating this weekend, per Rapoport. Arroyo made waves at the Senior Bowl as an incredibly athletic mismatch for any defender, linebacker or defensive back. Unfortunately, at the same event, he suffered a knee injury that will hold him out in Indianapolis. He is expected to be ready to workout at his pro day on March 24.
  • Carter wasn’t the only prospect who had a doctor send a letter on his behalf this week. Notorious sports medicine specialist Dr. Neal Elattrache sent out a letter to all 32 teams claiming that Michigan tight end Colston Loveland will be able to participate in minicamp and will be fully cleared in time for training camp after undergoing shoulder surgery last month, per Schefter. As the letter insinuates, Loveland will be unavailable to work out at the combine or his pro day.
  • Lastly, we saw one more letter going out, this one from Dr. Daniel Cooper, the surgeon who performed an ACL reconstruction on East Carolina cornerback Shavon Revel back in October. Cooper tells the league that Revel is on schedule to be fully cleared by the summer. Revel will still attend the combine for interviews and medical checks, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
