Eagles Showed Interest In Andrew Van Ginkel During Free Agency

Vic Fangio did not endear himself to several Dolphins defenders last season. Select Dolphins have addressed what appeared to be a poor fit, and a perception also emerged the one-and-done Fins DC was interested in returning to Philadelphia while he was on the job in Miami.

That ended up happening, as Fangio became the Eagles’ DC shortly after he and the Dolphins agreed to mutually part ways. This brought a reunion between the Eagles and the veteran coordinator, who was a consultant for Philly’s 2022 team before appearing squarely on the radar to succeed Jonathan Gannon. The latter’s Cardinals defection complicated Fangio’s 2023 offseason, and the DC’s eventual destination looks to have impacted the Eagles’ free agency plan this year.

The Eagles showed interest in Andrew Van Ginkel during the hybrid linebacker’s brief free agency stay, SI.com’s Albert Breer notes. The team ultimately viewed him as a bit too expensive. Van Ginkel had options to follow multiple former Dolphins coaches elsewhere, taking another one by signing with the Vikings. The former Brian Flores Miami charge has excelled in Minnesota.

Van Ginkel, 29, helped his free agency prospects in Fangio’s Dolphins defense by registering six sacks. The Wisconsin alum logged a career-high 321 pass-rushing snaps last season, helping secure a two-year, $20MM deal from the Vikings. While a foot injury sustained in Week 18 of last season kept Van Ginkel out of Miami’s wild-card loss in Kansas City, he enjoyed a nice market following a season in which he tallied 19 QB hits. The Rams also pursued Van Ginkel, who has been crucial to the Vikings’ 8-2 start.

The former fifth-round Dolphins draftee has notched a career-high eight sacks, registering two in Week 11. He has helped a Vikings team that said goodbye to Danielle Hunter and D.J. Wonnum. Minnesota remade its edge group by adding Jonathan Greenard early in the tampering period and then drafting Dallas Turner, also bolstering its off-ball LB corps by signing Blake Cashman. Van Ginkel leads the NFL with 13 tackles for loss, having added two pick-sixes during a strong reunion season with Flores, who was Miami’s HC when the team drafted him.

Fangio has reignited the Eagles’ defense, which crumbled after the team started 10-1 start last season. Philly ranks first in total defense, though only one player (Josh Sweat) has more than 3.5 sacks; the contract-year EDGE has six. As Van Ginkel also has a past as a standup linebacker, the Eagles had also already allocated much of their free agent budget to Bryce Huff and Saquon Barkley. The team also added low-cost linebackers in Zack Baun and the since-released Devin White. Now tied to the Vikings through the 2025 season, Van Ginkel keeping up this pace would stand to put him in line for a bigger payday in the not-too-distant future.

Cory Trice was back at practice for the Steelers today after being sidelined for more than a month with a hamstring injury. The 2023 seventh-round pick made his NFL debut in Week 1 of the 2024 campaign, and he snagged his first career interception in Week 2. When he returns, he’ll likely slide back to an end-of-the-depth-chart CB/special teamer for Pittsburgh. With Trice returning to practice, the Steelers will now have 21 days to activate the player to the active roster.

Eagles Activate Jordan Mailata From IR

The Eagles activated starting left tackle Jordan Mailata from injured reserve on Wednesday, per a team announcement.

Mailata injured his hamstring in Week 6, landing him on injured reserve and sidelining him for at least four games. The fifth-year tackle kept his absence to a minimum, returning to practice as soon as he was eligible after Week 10. Mailata’s activation puts him in line to start in the Eagles’ crucial Week 11 divisional matchup with the Commanders on Thursday night.

Mailata has been a crucial part of the Eagles’ offensive line since he earned a starting role in 2020. The 2018 seventh-round pick struggled with injuries in his first two NFL seasons, but has largely stayed healthy since. His ascendance from developmental former rugby player to star offensive tackle has resulted in two extensions from the Eagles totaling $130 million over seven years.

The 27-year-old Australian began the 2024 season with the same consistency he demonstrated over the previous three years, allowing just eight pressures and one sack across 185 pass-blocking snaps, per Pro Football Focus (subscription required). His absence, along with an injury to All-Pro right tackle Lane Johnson, has taken the Eagles’ normally-reliable offensive line to the bottom of the league. Their 27 sacks allowed are the 10th-most in the NFL, and their 10.2% sack rate is the third-highest.

Philadelphia has relied on Fred Johnson to play both tackle spots this season. However, the former Florida Gator has struggled in the first stretch of extended playing time in his career, allowing 32 pressures and seven sacks across his 193 pass-blocking snaps, per PFF. With Mailata returning to the starting lineup opposing Lane Johnson, the Eagles’ offensive line will be at full-strength for the first time since Week 6.

DE Vinny Curry Retires

Vinny Curry is officially calling it a career. The former Super Bowl champ is set to retire as a member of the Eagles this Thursday, per Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The move doesn’t come as a huge surprise considering Curry has only appeared in 11 games since the 2020 campaign. The pass rusher signed with the Jets during the 2021 offseason but ended up missing that entire season after being diagnosed with a rare blood disorder. He worked his way back to appear in 11 games for the Jets in 2022, although he was only limited to a part-time role. Curry went unsigned during the 2023 season and didn’t find a gig to start the 2024 campaign.

Prior to his Jets stint, Curry made a name for himself in Philly. A former second-round pick out of Marshall, Curry evolved into a key rotational defender for the Eagles for much of the 2010s. While he only started 16 of his 84 appearances during his first stint with the Eagles, he still contributed 22 sacks, five forced fumbles, and 63 QB hits. Curry also started each of the Eagles three games during their run to a Super Bowl LII championship.

Following a one-year stop in Tampa Bay, Curry returned to Philly for the 2019 and 2020 seasons. His 41 tackles for loss and 85 QB hits rank in the top-10 in franchise history, so it’s only fitting that he’ll sign an honorary contract to finish his career with the Eagles.

Bruss was waived by the Rams yesterday to make room for returning linemen Steve Avila and Jonah Jackson. A former third-round pick, Bruss didn’t make an appearance through his first two seasons in the NFL but started three of his eight appearances in 2024.

Eagles Designate Jordan Mailata For Return

The Eagles face a quick turnaround ahead of Week 11, but they could have their starting left tackle back in time for that contest. Jordan Mailata has been designated for return from injured reserve, the team announced on Monday.

A hamstring injury made it clear a multi-week absence would be in store, and Mailata was indeed moved to IR in October. Fortunately for he and the team, the seventh-year blocker has had his practice window opened after missing the minimum four games. Mailata will need to be activated within the next 21 days.

The 27-year-old Australian has started each of his appearances since 2021, serving as a key member of Philadelphia’s offensive line. Mailata’s 88.4 PFF grade so far this season is the highest of his career, and his return will be welcomed on the Eagles’ offense. The former seventh-rounder signed a three-year, $66MM extension this offseason, a deal which came in the wake of only one missed game across the past two years.

Remaining healthy moving forward will be key Mailata as he returns to practice. Teams generally perform light workouts on short weeks, and that will be the case for the Eagles as they prepare to face the Commanders on Thursday night. That contest will be crucial in determining this year’s NFC East winner, so returning to full strength on the blindside will be key (provided Mailata is activated in time).

Fred Johnson has handled starting duties in Mailata’s absence. While the Eagles have managed to win five straight games coming off their bye week, Johnson has been charged with five sacks in the past three games and seven overall by PFF. Philadelphia’s pass protection has plenty of room for improvement moving forward, and getting Mailata back in the fold soon should help. Bringing him back into the picture will leave the team with five IR activations.

NFL Injury Updates: Hurts, Coleman, Barmore

An interesting situation played out today when Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni seemed to let something inadvertently slip during his press conference. Sirianni claimed that quarterback Jalen Hurts has been limited in practice as he has been “dealing with the ankle.” This would be of no consequence, if Hurts hadn’t been listed on the injury report with a “rest” designation, per ESPN’s Tim McManus.

Per McManus, two different sources claimed that “Hurts has been dealing with a mild ankle issue for a couple weeks” and that he is dealing with “lower leg soreness.” Hurts was reportedly limited in practice on Wednesday for “load management” purposes, requiring that he be on the injury report. When asked, Hurts told the media that he just does what he’s told and was told a rest day was in the cards this week.

After two days of full participation, Hurts’ availability shouldn’t really be in question this weekend. It will be interesting, though, to see if the league follows up with an investigation on a potential injury reporting violation by the Eagles.

Here are a few other injury updates from around the NFL:

  • Bills rookie wide receiver Keon Coleman has already been ruled out for this week after sitting out the entire week of practice. When his status for the week was still up in the air, though, head coach Sean McDermott claimed that, while they were taking it “one day at a time,” there was potential that he could be out for “more than just this week,” according to Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic. ESPN’s Alaina Getzenberg followed up with a report from McDermott this morning in which he speculated that Coleman would “probably miss multiple weeks with his wrist injury.” The good news is that McDermott clarified that Coleman would avoid injured reserve, accounting for the fact that the rookie should be back within four weeks.
  • The Patriots have yet to see defensive tackle Christian Barmore in the 2024 season after the 25-year-old was diagnosed with blood clots in late-July. When the regular season was approaching, the team began preparing for a full-season absence from their blossoming interior defender, but according to Mike Giardi of the Boston Sports Journal, Barmore more may yet play in 2024. Head coach Jerod Mayo told the media that “we’re getting close” to a possible return to practice for Barmore earlier this week. While nothing is set in stone with that statement, it’s an encouraging sign for a young player dealing with one of the sport’s scarier diagnoses.
