Workout Notes: Giants, Steelers, Ravens, Chargers, Commanders
Having lost superstar No. 1 wide receiver Malik Nabers to a season-ending torn ACL, the Giants are looking to replenish their depth at the position. With that in mind, they’ll work out free agent receiver Samori Toure on Friday, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports. Now 27 years old, Toure entered the NFL as a seventh-round pick of the Packers in 2022. Toure caught 13 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown with the Packers over two seasons, and he hasn’t appeared in a regular-season game since 2023. The Bears signed Toure to a reserve/futures contract last January, but they waived him in August. The 6-foot-1, 196-pounder has been on the open market since then.

- After losing practice squad safety Sebastian Castro to the Buccaneers on Tuesday, the Steelers brought in a handful of potential replacements for visits on Wednesday, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2. The team auditioned Kendell Brooks, Jack Henderson, Maxen Hook, Glendon Miller, and Mark Perry. Brooks, who appeared in five games with the Titans last year, is the only member of the group with regular-season NFL experience.
- The Ravens had defensive backs Amani Oruwariye, Michael Davis, Kemon Hall, and Keenan Isaac in for tryouts on Wednesday, per Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic. The 30-year-old Davis is the most experienced member of the group, having amassed 122 appearances (76 starts) and eight interceptions with the Chargers and Commanders since 2017. However, only Oruwariye impressed Baltimore’s brass enough to earn a contract with the team this week. The Ravens added the seventh-year cornerback and former Lion, Jaguar, and Cowboy on a practice squad deal on Wednesday. He’ll provide depth with the Ravens dealing with a slew of defensive injuries, including to corners Marlon Humphrey (calf), Nate Wiggins (elbow), and Chidobe Awuzie (hamstring).
- Along with Bobby Hart, whom they signed to their practice squad, the Chargers worked out fellow offensive linemen Chris Hubbard and Zachary Thomas on Wednesday, Wilson relays. Hubbard, 34, has 102 games of experience and 61 starts under his belt. The guard/tackle played in eight games and totaled three starts with the Giants last year. Thomas divided 2024 between the Patriots and Texans, with whom he combined for 14 of his 17 career appearances. He still hasn’t logged a start since debuting with the Rams in 2022.
- The Commanders tried out punter Jack Browning on Thursday, according to Wilson. Washington is looking for depth behind two-time Pro Bowl punter and 12th-year man Tress Way, who has averaged 47.1 yards per punt and 43.4 net on 14 tries this season. Browning, undrafted from San Diego State in 2o24, appeared in 10 games with Tampa Bay as a rookie and averaged 42.5 yards (34.6 net) on 10 punts.

Barton started two games at right tackle for the Cardinals in 2024, but he couldn’t win a backup job in Cleveland this summer. Needham, who appeared in 63 games for the Dolphins over the last six years, similarly had a shot at a nickel role in the Browns defense, but the team opted to keep their younger cornerbacks instead. The two veterans are free to sign with any team, while the other 17 cuts will be subject to waivers.
Among them are Henry and Rush, two 2023 fifth-rounders who made their way to Cleveland this offseason after failing to catch on with their original clubs. Henry started three games for the Commanders as a rookie, but was waived under Washington’s new regime last August. He spent time with the Bengals and the Cowboys before landing with the Eagles in November and finishing the season as a Super Bowl champion. Rush was a fringe third-round pick in 2023 but fell to the Colts on Day 3. He didn’t make the 53-man roster as a rookie and bounced between Kansas City and Pittsburgh across his first two seasons with five regular-season appearances for the Steelers.

AFC Workouts: Snead, Texans, Mims
Willie Snead hasn’t seen much success in the NFL since his departure from Baltimore following the 2020 season. The 32-year-old veteran receiver bounced around over the next two years, splitting his 2021 campaign between the Raiders and Panthers before spending two seasons in San Francisco. After an injury placed him on the Dolphins’ injured reserve in last year’s preseason, resulting in him getting cut and sitting out the entire season, Snead is attempting a comeback with a recent tryout with the Chargers.
Los Angeles attempted to improve their receiving corps this offseason through the draft with additions like Ole Miss’ Tre Harris in the second round and Auburn’s KeAndre Lambert-Smith in the fifth. Their top returning wideouts from last year include Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston, and Derius Davis, and an aging Mike Williams has returned after a year away. The team hosted Snead for a veteran tryout earlier this week, per ESPN’s Kris Rhim.
Adding Snead would provide some veteran depth to the group. Though he had some resurgent seasons catching balls from Lamar Jackson in Baltimore, he was never able to reach the heights of his surprising first two campaigns in New Orleans. Since leaving the Ravens, his production has been minimal, so it will likely take a stellar tryout to convince the next team to sign him.

- The Texans continue to work out cornerbacks as the offseason carries on. After the team hosted former Raiders first-round pick Damon Arnette on Monday, Houston welcomed Duke Shelley and Keenan Isaac in the days after, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2. Shelley, a six-year veteran, has 11 starts in his career over time with the Bears and Vikings. The last two years, though, have seen him relegated to specials teams with the Rams and the practice squad of the Giants. Isaac, a former undrafted signee for Tampa Bay in 2023, spent this past United Football League season with Arnette on the Houston Roughnecks.
- Lastly, the Browns worked out former Saints running back Jordan Mims, per Wilson. With a deep, young group of rushers already on the roster, Mims potential signing would add some camp depth with the possibility of him contributing on special teams as a returner.

Buccaneers Claim S Mike Edwards
The Buccaneers are big on safety reunions this year. Months after bringing back Jordan Whitehead following his two seasons with the Jets, they are greenlighting a Mike Edwards comeback.
Cut by two teams recently, Edwards is coming back to Tampa via waiver claim, KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson tweets. A former third-round Bucs draftee, Edwards played four seasons in Tampa before signing with the Chiefs last year. Edwards has three career pick-sixes and has made 28 starts, but he was unable to secure much playing time with the Bills or Titans this season.
Buffalo brought in Edwards as part of its post-Jordan Poyer/Micah Hyde solution but saw Damar Hamlin commandeer the starting job alongside the re-signed Taylor Rapp. The Bills drafted Cole Bishop in Round 2, further protecting them at safety despite the exits of two seven-year starters. The Bills cut Edwards last week, while the Titans dropped him Wednesday.
The Bucs passed on Edwards last week, but his situation changed slightly. Because the Bills cut him before the trade deadline, Edwards was released. Tennessee booting him after the deadline sent the sixth-year vet to the waiver wire, and the 4-6 Bucs will pounce this time. Edwards, 28, will rejoin ex-teammates Whitehead and Antoine Winfield Jr. at safety.
Edwards has considerable playoff experience, being with the Bucs throughout their Tom Brady partnership and then replacing an injured Bryan Cook during the second half of last season with the Chiefs. Edwards signed one-year deals with Kansas City and Buffalo; his one-year, $1.13MM Tennessee contract will now transfer to Tampa Bay’s payroll. The part-time starter will aim to use familiar surroundings to bounce back, as 2024 has not gone especially well for him.
With the Bucs, Edwards operated as a spot starter from 2019-21; though, he did start in 11 games in that span. That stretch included a two-pick-six game against the Falcons in September 2021. Drafted as part of a Day 2 DB wave that included Winfield, Carlton Davis, Jamel Dean and Sean Murphy-Bunting from 2018-20, Edwards started 12 games alongside Winfield in 2022 — after the Bucs had let Whitehead join the Jets. The team re-signed Whitehead to a two-year, $9MM deal in March.
After playing 621 defensives snaps before the playoffs with the Chiefs last season, when he started three more games and played 97% of Kansas City’s defensive snaps in Super Bowl LVIII, Edwards has logged all of seven this year. The Bucs have safety/slot Tavierre Thomas and 2023 UDFA Kaevon Merriweather stationed as second-stringers behind Winfield and Whitehead. Nichols is reportedly out for the season, per the Cardinals, but Prater could still return after an additional four-game absence. He’s already missed two games so far with a left knee issue. The 40-year-old was a perfect six-for-six on field goal attempts this year while 10-for-10 on extra points.
The Browns lose an important depth lineman in Harris. Harris started games at left tackle and center as an injury replacement this year, but he’ll be out for at least the next four games with an ankle injury.
Falcons head coach Raheem Morris reported that Abernathy will be out for a “significant time,” per D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

This year’s ‘Mr. Irrelevant,’ Key did not make the Jets’ initial 53-man roster. The 24-year-old was retained via the practice squad, but he did not see any regular season action. Now a free agent, Key will look to latch on with another organization.
Ross signed with the Eagles in May as part of his bid to return to the NFL. The former Combine 40-yard dash record holder was released during roster cutdowns, however, after he was unable to carve out a depth role on offense. Ross will rejoin the team in a bid to provide Philadelphia with a complementary receiving option as the team deals with a number of injuries at the WR spot.
