Dolphins Unlikely To Sign CB Bashaud Breeland
The Dolphins are unlikely to sign free agent cornerback Bashaud Breeland after meeting with him last week, according to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald.
Miami is searching for a starting corner to play opposite Xavien Howard, but it doesn’t appear as though Breeland is healthy enough to play immediately, per Salguero. Breeland, of course, agreed to a three-year, $24MM deal with the Panthers earlier this year, but that contract was voided after he failed a physical. A foot injury that was subsequently infected is reportedly the root cause of Breeland’s health question marks.
Breeland, 26, hasn’t been wanting for interest this offseason, as he’s either met with or been linked to the Raiders, Ravens, Browns, Colts, Chiefs, and Jets. However, no club has yet to sign Breeland, and while injury issues are surely playing a part in most teams’ decision not to ink the veteran defensive back, the Ravens — for one — believe he’s asking for too much money.
For now, the Dolphins are hoping one of Tony Lippett, Cordrea Tankersley, or Torry McTyer proves capable of playing alongside Howard as a starter. Aside from Breeland, other available corners include Adam Jones, Jeremy Lane, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Kayvon Webster, and Orlando Scandrick.
Dolphins To Sign DT Kendall Langford
The Dolphins have agreed to sign defensive tackle Kendall Langford, according to a source who spoke with Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald (on Twitter). Terms of the deal are not yet known, but it’s likely a one-year deal with little or no guarantees. 
Langford, 32, entered the league as a third-round pick of the Dolphins in 2008 and spent the first four years of his career in Miami. Since then, he’s also had stints with the Rams (three seasons), Colts (two seasons), and the Texans (one game in 2017).
Langford offers a wealth of NFL experience, as he’s appeared in 136 games (113 starts) during his pro career. Unfortunately, it has been a while since he’s made a major impact on the field. In 2016, Langford lasted just seven games before the Colts placed him on injured reserve with a knee injury. Then, last year, the Texans signed him after both J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus suffered season-ending injuries, but his time in Houston was very short-lived.
Still, Langford was a productive NFL starter as recently as 2015. In that season with the Colts, he tallied a career-high seven sacks and 38 total tackles. He’ll look to get back to his old form as a reserve with the Dolphins, if he can make the cut as a reserve behind projected starters Akeem Spence and Davon Godchaux.
Dolphins Had Interest In A.J. Johnson
- Denver wasn’t the only suitor for Johnson. Volin tweets that the Dolphins (along with a “couple other teams”) had expressed interest in the rookie linebacker before he joined the Broncos.

Dolphins Release DT Gabe Wright
Hours after being involved in an on-field altercation, the Dolphins have let go of Gabe Wright. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that Miami has released the defensive tackle.
According to Jackson, Wright was involved in one of several incidents during Monday’s practice. The defensive tackle grazed his elbow into the back of running back Kenyan Drake, who wasn’t wearing a helmet. A source told the reporter that the “shot was uncalled for.” The hit took place moments after defensive tackle Anthony Moten and running back Senorise Perry were involved in a “dust up.”
Of course, Monday’s incident wasn’t the only reason for Wright’s release. The former fourth-round pick out of Auburn has only appeared in 13 games in three NFL seasons, compiling 11 tackles and two passes defended. Jackson writes that the 26-year-old hasdshown some promising flashes during camp, and he was involved in at least one pass rush during Miami’s preseason opener.
However, he was seemingly buried on the depth chart, as the Dolphins seem set to roll with Akeem Spence, Davon Godchaux, Jordan Phillips and Vincent Taylor as their four defensive tackles. Miami is also rostering versatile lineman William Hayes, and they could add undrafted rookies Jamiyus Pittman and Moten to the practice squad.
Dolphins Shopping For Cornerback Help
The Dolphins are actively shopping for a starting cornerback, Omar Kelly of the Sun Sentinel (on Twitter) reports. So far, the ‘Fins have been dissatisfied with every cornerback on the team besides Xavien Howard and Bobby McCain, Kelly hears.

The Dolphins’ interest in adding a cornerback doesn’t come as a huge surprise, particularly after they met with free agent Bashaud Breeland last week. Howard has locked down one starting outside spot and McCain will serve as the main slot guy, but the Dolphins are still looking for a second starting outside corner. Cordrea Tankersley, Tony Lippett, and Torry McTyer have been battling for the job, but it sounds like none of those players have impressed thus far in camp.
Miami has apparently been exploring cornerback upgrades throughout the summer and even considered taking Sam Beal in the supplemental draft before the Giants pounced on him. There aren’t a lot of difference makers left on the open market besides Breeland, but the Dolphins could find an impact corner as the final cut draws near.
Bashaud Breeland To Visit Dolphins
Cornerback Bashaud Breeland‘s tour of NFL cities continues. Breeland will visit the Dolphins on Sunday, according to Josina Anderson of ESPN (Twitter link).
Breeland is one of the biggest names left on the free agent market, and has taken a number of visits recently. He recently worked out for the Patriots, and has also visited the Chiefs, Ravens, Browns and Colts. He’s left all those visits without contracts, and it’s unclear what has been delaying his signing. It’s possible he’s holding out for bigger money.
Breeland initially signed a three-year $24MM deal with the Panthers earlier this offseason, but it was voided due to a foot injury that was discovered. He spent the first four years of his career with the Redskins after Washington took him in the fourth round back in 2014.
The Dolphins have a wide open competition to be the starting cornerback opposite Xavien Howard, so Breeland could be a nice fit. As things currently stand, Torry McTyer, Cordrea Tankersley, and Tony Lippett are battling for the other starting spot. None of them have a ton of starting experience, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Breeland finally finds a home in Miami.
Mike Hull Expected To Miss Several Weeks
- Dolphins linebacker Mike Hull has a sprained MCL and is expected to be out for several weeks, reports NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero (via Twitter). The 27-year-old has been an important bench piece for Miami over the past two seasons, and he finished last season with 35 tackles in 16 games (three starts). Terence Garvin, Chase Allen, Jerome Baker, and Quentin Poling will receive more backup reps during Hull’s absence.

Dolphins Notes: Beal, Carroo
The Dolphins‘ interest in adding cornerback help led them to consider supplemental prospect Sam Beal, as Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald writes. However, Miami didn’t hold Beal in as high regard as did the Giants, who sacrificed a third-round pick in order to land the Western Michigan product. Beal, of course, suffered a season-ending injury upon landing in New York, but he could have provided depth to a Dolphins defensive back depth chart currently led by Xavien Howard, Cordrea Tankersley, and Bobby McCain. Given that Miami is still searching for cornerback reinforcements, Jackson speculates the club could be interested in a trade in the coming weeks, but notes the Dolphins are loathe to sacrifice high draft picks.
- More from Jackson, who adds that former third-round pick Leonte Carroo is not a lock to make the Dolphins‘ roster, especially given the team’s other options at wide receiver. Miami gave up a haul of draft picks for the right to select Carroo in the 2016, but he’s managed only 10 receptions and 98 yards over two seasons. The Dolphins now have the option to deploy DeVante Parker, Kenny Stills, Danny Amendola, and Albert Wilson, so Carroo — who Jackson notes hasn’t always been in the best shape and has trouble separating from opposing corners — could be a roster casualty. For what it’s worth, Caroo was also considered to be on the Dolphins’ roster bubble in 2017.
Gore: Understands Why Dolphins Traded Jay Ajayi
Frank Gore may be competing for touches with fellow running back Kenyan Drake, but that doesn’t mean the veteran isn’t impressed by his Dolphins teammate. In fact, Gore told Jason Lieser of the Palm Beach Post that he understands why the organization moved on from their former starter in order to give Drake more reps last season.
Dolphins Sign RB Jeremy Langford
Jeremy Langford has found a new home. ESPN’s Josina Anderson reports (via Twitter) that the running back has signed with the Dolphins.
It’s been a quiet offseason for the 26-year-old running back, as he hadn’t generated any reported interest after being cut loose by the Jets in April. The former fourth-rounder split the 2017 campaign between the Ravens’ and Jets’ practice squad, but he didn’t end up seeing the field for a regular season game. He inked a future/reserves contract with New York following the season.
The running back’s last notable contribution came in 2016 with the Bears, when he ran for 200 yards and four touchdowns on 62 carries. He also added another 19 receptions for 142 yards. Langford compiled more than 800 offensive yards during his breakout 2015 campaign. The running back will be reuniting with head coach Adam Gase, who was Chicago’s offensive coordinator in 2015.
Langford may have a tough time making the Dolphins’ opening-day roster. Kenyan Drake and Frank Gore sit atop the depth chart, and the organization seems to be optimistic about fourth-rounder Kalen Ballage. Therefore, the two-year veteran will likely have to compete with Senorise Perry and Brandon Radcliff for a roster spot.
