AFC Mailbags: Jags, Colts, Steelers, Ravens
It’s Saturday, and that means ESPN.com’s NFL writers open up their mailbags and answer questions from readers. Here are some interesting notes out of the AFC…
- Considering the age of Jason Babin and Chris Clemons, Michael DiRocco doesn’t see much sense in the Jaguars cutting Andre Branch.
- When asked if the Colts would add a center or safety before training camp, Mike Wells answers that the team is set at those positions. The writer believes Khaled Holmes will start at center and Delano Howell “is on track” to be the starting safety.
- Derek Moye, Darrius Heyward-Bey and Justin Brown will likely be competing for the Steelers‘ fifth receiver spot, writes Scott Brown.
- Looking at potential free agents additions for the Steelers, Brown says he would “be surprised” if the team doesn’t consider signing linebacker James Harrison. He adds that the team will “keep an eye” on Jermichael Finley but won’t have much interest in Ed Reed.
- Ravens writer Jamison Hensley expects the team to stick with their young core of cornerbacks. If the team sees a need at the position, Hensley says they won’t address it until final cuts.
Ed Reed Hopes To Play In 2014
Veteran free agent safety Ed Reed aims to play in 2014, he told reporters at Ravens cornerback Lardarius Webb‘s charity event. Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com, and Aaron Wilson and Jeff Zriebec of the Baltimore Sun were on hand to document Reed’s comments (all links go to Twitter).
Reed, 35, signed with Texans before the 2013 season, having spent his entire career in Baltimore. After losing his starting job in Houston, he was released in November, and signed by the Jets. He finished the season with 38 tackles and four interceptions, grading as the league’s 30th-best safety per Pro Football Focus (subscription required).
Reed said he is preparing as if he will play, but that doesn’t mean he will be attending training camp with any team. The veteran said he knows there are teams in the league that “need safeties,” and believes that he can still contribute. He also noted that he could see himself “being a part of [the Ravens]” if he does not play, presumably in a coaching capacity. Additionally, Reed, enigmatic as ever, referenced Barry Sanders in saying that he could choose to abruptly retire without any fanfare.
Free Agent Notes: Freeman, Jets, Daniels
ESPN’s Adam Schefter has a trio of re-signings (via Twitter): running back Matt Asiata (Vikings), wide receiver Jeremy Ross (Lions) and linebacker Craig Robertson (Browns). Each player signed an exclusive rights free agent tender to stay with their respect teams. The trio was solid in 2013; Asiata ran for 166 yards on 44 carries, Ross had six receptions and six kick returns and Robertson compiled 85 tackles.
Let’s take a look at some more free agent rumors…
- Quarterback Josh Freeman visited the Bears today, tweets Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com. Freeman finished the season with the Vikings after playing four-plus years with the Buccaneers. The Bears also worked out quarterback Adam Weber (via La Confora’s Twitter) and tight end Matthew Mulligan (via Chicago Tribune’s Brad Biggs on Twitter).
- There are still eight Jets free agents left on the open market, and Rich Cimini of ESPN.com takes a look at all of their statuses. Cimini mentions that Rex Ryan hasn’t “shut the door” on bringing back Ed Reed, but that a return doesn’t seem likely. Among possible returns, Cimini looks at Josh Mauga and Lex Hilliard.
- Owen Daniels visited with the Patriots before deciding to sign with the Ravens, tweets ESPN.com’s Tania Ganguli. The tight end also visited the Packers and Redskins.
- The Titans have officially cut Chris Johnson, as well as defensive end Adewale Ojomo, tweets Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun.
- The Redskins released linebacker Josh Hull, tweets Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. In 2013, Hull had 14 tackles in 11 games.
