AFC Notes: Colts, Chargers, Ravens, Jets

Let’s round up a few items from around the AFC….

  • The Colts‘ decision to sign return specialist Marcus Thigpen on Monday surprised some people within the organization, according to Stephen Holder of the Indianapolis Star (via Twitter). Thigpen figures to take over return duties from Griff Whalen, who had a 50-yard return last Thursday for the Colts.
  • Safety Adrian Phillips, who was waived on Monday to make space for the return of Antonio Gates, cleared waivers and is likely to rejoin the Chargers via the taxi squad, Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego tweets.
  • The Ravens worked out defensive end Nordly Capi, defensive end Phillip Hunt, and linebacker J.R. Tavai, according to ESPN.com’s Field Yates (Twitter link).
  • The Jets auditioned outside linebackers Gerald Rivers and Kaelin Burnett on Tuesday, a source tells Brian Costello of the New York Post (on Twitter).

Minor NFL Transactions: 9/10/15

Today’s minor signings, cuts, and other moves..

  • The Chargers announced that they have brought back tight end John Phillips. In a corresponding move, the team waived rookie tackle Tyreek Burwell. The 6-5, 251-pound Phillips spent the previous two seasons with the Bolts, appearing in 31 games with seven starts. Mainly deployed as a versatile and reliable blocker, he’s chipped in with five receptions and one touchdown since signing as a free agent in 2013.
  • Outside linebacker Josh Martin (concussion) cleared waivers and reached an injury settlement with the Chiefs rather than staying on their IR, Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star tweets.
  • The Jets waived defensive lineman Davon Walls from IR with an injury settlement, Brian Costello of the New York Post tweets.
  • The Titans have reached an injury settlement with linebacker J.R. Tavai, which allows Tavai to sign with another team, as Terry McCormick of TitanInsider.com tweets.

Titans Reduce Roster To 53 Players

The Titans have confirmed the previously-reported releases of wide receiver Hakeem Nicks and offensive tackle Byron Stingily, and have announced 10 more moves, which reduce their roster count to 53 players.

Here are Tennessee’s roster moves, per a team release:

Waived:

  • RB David Fluellen
  • WR Jacoby Ford
  • G Josue Matias
  • WR Tre McBride
  • G Will Poehls
  • WR Rico Richardson
  • QB Alex Tanney

Placed on injured reserve:

  • LB Zaviar Gooden
  • LB Yawin Smallwood
  • LB J.R. Tavai

With Nicks, Ford, McBride, and Richardson no longer on the roster, Tennessee will start the year with just four wide receivers, barring further moves.

Titans, 13 UDFAs Agree To Deals

SUNDAY, 4:19pm: The Titans have also signed Middle Tennessee State University running back Reggie Whatley, per Wyatt (Twitter link).

SATURDAY, 9:09pm: The Titans have reached agreements with a dozen undrafted free agents, according to Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean. Here’s the full list:
