The 49ers worked out cornerback Kayvon Webster on Tuesday, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). Webster stands as one of the best remaining free agents left on the board at this stage of the offseason.

Webster also met with the Bears earlier this month, but left Chicago without a deal. Despite his recent injury troubles, he profiles as a potential difference-maker for the Niners who could be had on a cheap deal.

Webster joined the Texans late last offseason but played in just two games thanks to multiple injuries and two separate IR stints. Webster, who was lauded for his talent while buried behind big name corners in Denver, has failed to take the next leap forward in his career. Many expected big things when he reunited with Wade Phillips as a member of the Rams in 2017, but he failed to make a major impact in eleven games before suffering a season-ending Achilles tear.

The 49ers recently lost Jimmie Ward to a broken collarbone, so this would be an opportune time to see what Webster can do before Ward returns for training camp. The Niners also fortified their CB group by drafting Tim Harris in the sixth round, but there’s no guarantee that the rookie will make the final cut.

Bears Meet With Kayvon Webster

The Bears will host free agent cornerback Kayvon Webster on Wednesday, a source tells Mike Garafolo of NFL.com (on Twitter). Even after drafting two cornerbacks last week, the Bears are apparently still in the hunt for secondary help.

Webster joined the Texans late last offseason but played in just two games thanks to multiple injuries and two separate IR stints. Webster, who was lauded for his talent while buried behind big name corners in Denver, has failed to take the next leap forward in his career. Many expected big things when he reunited with Wade Phillips as a member of the Rams in 2017, but he failed to make a major impact in eleven games before suffering a season-ending Achilles tear.

The Bears project to start Prince Amukamara and Kyle Fuller at outside cornerback with new addition Buster Skrine manning the slot. After those three, the Bears have veteran Sherrick McManis, Kevin Toliver, John Franklin, Michael Joseph, Jonathon Mincy, and two late-round draft picks in Kansas State’s Duke Shelley and Valdosta State’s Stephen Denmark.

Texans To Place Thomas, Webster On IR

Demaryius Thomas‘ season is over. The Texans will place their No. 2 wide receiver on IR after he suffered an Achilles injury Sunday.

Interestingly, Kayvon Webster will head back to IR as well. The Texans just brought Webster off IR on Saturday but lost the cornerback during the game to a thigh injury. Houston also placed linebacker Brian Peters on IR and promoted wide receiver Steven Mitchell to the active roster from its practice squad.

Teammates from 2013-16 in Denver, Thomas and Webster’s Houston futures are uncertain. The Texans may well have been unlikely to keep Thomas on his lofty contract — which includes a non-guaranteed $14MM base salary in 2019 — before his injury, which is believed to be a torn Achilles. Now that he will have to undergo a significant rehab endeavor, the soon-to-be 31-year-old wideout likely will not be part of the 2019 Texans.

Thomas’ ninth NFL season will end with 59 receptions for 677 yards, the bulk of those coming with the Broncos, and five touchdowns. The 2010 first-round pick made four Pro Bowls between 2012-16 and amassed at least 900 receiving yards from 2012-17. He has not missed a game since early in the 2011 slate, having started 111 consecutive games since the start of the ’12 season.

The Texans added Webster late in the offseason. He ended up playing in just two games, suffering multiple injuries that will result in two separate IR stays this season. The sixth-year cornerback, who suffered a season-ending injury in 2017 as well, will be a free agent at season’s end.

Texans Activate CB Kayvon Webster

The Texans are in line to have additional cornerback depth for their late-December games and likely the playoffs.

They are activating Kayvon Webster from IR, Mark Berman of Fox 26 reports (on Twitter). Webster returned to practice last week and may well be in uniform Sunday.

A strained quad sent Webster to IR. He has not played since Week 5, his only game as a Texan thus far. The Texans added Webster as a free agent in late August. The Rams cut ties with the former third-round pick earlier in the offseason.

Webster started 11 games for the 2017 Rams but saw a ruptured Achilles’ tendon end his season in November of last season. The quad injury Webster suffered this season may have sidelined him, but he’s further removed from the Achilles setback and may be able to help the Texans as a depth piece.

The former four-year Broncos cog signed a one-year, $2.25MM contract with the Texans this season. That is well below the value of his 2017 Rams pact, and Webster’s latest contract year has obviously not gone well. He will have a chance to make an impression for the Texans, however.

This move also means the Texans cannot bring Kevin Johnson off IR, with the team having used both of its slots already. The Texans brought back linebacker Dylan Cole from IR earlier this season. Johnson has been out since September with what has turned out to be a severe concussion. Houston has Johnathan Joseph and Shareece Wright serving as its starting cornerbacks.

Texans Designate CB Kayvon Webster For Return

The Texans have designated cornerback Kayvon Webster to return from injured reserve, the club announced today.

Webster was placed on IR in early October after suffering his a strained quad. Because he’s already missed eight weeks of action, Webster is eligible to return to the active roster at any time. Now that Webster has returned to practice, Houston has opened a three-week window during which it must either place him on its 53-man roster, or leave him on injured reserve for the rest of the season.

After inking a one-year, $2.25MM deal with the Texans in August, Webster missed the first four games of the year while recovering from an Achilles tear he suffered while with the Rams in 2017. Webster managed to play in only a single contest before going down with injury once again.

Despite his injury history, there’s reason to think Webster can contribute to the Texans’ defense down the stretch. Although Pro Football Focus ranked Webster in the bottom half of its cornerback grades last year, Webster finished 31st among 81 CBs in Football Outsiders’ success rate, meaning he was effective at stopping wide receivers short of the sticks. FO also charted Webster with allowing 6.8 yard per pass, 38th among cornerbacks.

Houston’s defense is one of the best in the league, but the club is better against the run (second in DVOA) than the pass (16th). As such, Webster could potentially see snaps alongside Aaron Colvin, Johnathan Joseph, and Kareem Jackson if he’s able to return.

Texans Place Kayvon Webster On IR

The Texans will place Kayvon Webster on injured reserve, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). It’s currently unclear whether Webster will be a candidate to return later this year.

Webster spent the first four years of his career as a reserve with the Broncos, but signed a two-year deal with the Rams last spring. The reunion with defensive coordinator Wade Phillips did not go as planned, and neither has his reboot with the Texans. Webster joined the club in late August, but an Achilles injury prevented him from playing in the first four games of the season. He returned this past week to face the Cowboys, but he suffered a quadriceps injury that will shut him down for a while.

On Tuesday, the Texans elevated defensive back Mike Tyson from the practice squad to help fill in for Webster. The Texans could elevate Shareece Wright to the starting lineup to replace Webster, or they could shift Kareem Jackson over from safety and use Justin Reid as a first-stringer in the middle.

Extra Points: Mack, Rams, Rodgers, Luck

We previously heard that the Rams had made a bid on Khalil Mack, but the Raiders rejected the offer because the picks were going to be too low. Tonight, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported (via Twitter) that Los Angeles ultimately offered Oakland a first- and third-round pick.

However, the Rams didn’t see much of a future with Mack, especially after handing Aaron Donald a lucrative $135MM extension. Schefter notes that the team would have turned around and traded the impending free agent (presumably after he inked his franchise tag) this offseason. The team was trying to go “all in” on the upcoming campaign, with the hope that they could pair Mack with Donald, Ndamukong Suh and Michael Brockers.

Instead, Mack was dealt to the Bears, who then signed the pass rusher to a six-year, $141 million deal. The 27-year-old had a big game in his debut with Chicago, collecting three tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and a pick-six.

Raiders coach Jon Gruden sat down to discuss the Mack trade with ESPN’s Lisa Salters, noting that the star player “obviously” didn’t want to be in Oakland. “Obviously, Khalil Mack didn’t want to play here,” Gruden said (via Josh Alper of ProFootballTalk.com). “That’s what’s being missed here. He was under contract, Lisa. He was under contract. He never showed up for an OTA, never showed up for a training camp and it was obvious he wasn’t going to show up for the season. Don’t forget that. We have to get ready to play and I want players that want to be here, that want to help us put this thing back in high gear.”
Aaron Rodgers sat out three series during last night’s contest before leading the Packers to a comeback victory over the Bears. While the quarterback may have tossed three second-half touchdowns, he’s not a sure-thing for next weekend’s game against the Vikings. Head coach Mike McCarthy didn’t give any indications as to whether the team would start Rodgers or backup DeShone Kizer on Sunday. “We do have some information and no decision has been made,” McCarthy said (via Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com). “We’re still collecting all the information.” NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport tweets that Rodgers is pushing to play, and the team will continue to monitor the swelling in his knee as the week goes on.
We learned earlier today that Texans cornerback Kevin Johnson was going to miss several weeks as he recovered from a concussion. Fortunately, it sounds like reinforcement is around the corner, as coach Bill O’Brien told ESPN’s Sarah Barshop that cornerback Kayvon Webster is trending in the right direction as he recovers from an Achilles injury (Twitter links). However, the defensive back won’t be ready for next week, and the team will consider moving safety Kareem Jackson to cornerback as they deal with the injuries.
In an interview with Rapoport, Colts quarterback Andrew Luck discussed a “previously secret injury” to his right shoulder that he suffered while snowboarding. The injury occurred after Luck had suffered a labrum tear in 2015, and the quarterback ended up hurting his AC joint in his throwing shoulder during the snowboarding accident. For what it’s worth, Luck is convinced that the indiscretion didn’t do anything to slow his eventual rehab from labrum surgery. “I’ve seen more doctors than I can count on two hands over the past two or three years,” Luck said, “and the consensus — unanimous — is that the AC is not an issue, nor did it have an effect. The labrum is an issue.”

The Texans are set to sign cornerback Kayvon Webster, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (on Twitter). The former Ram will receive $2MM on a one-year deal.

Webster worked out for the Texans on Sunday afternoon and it did not take long for a deal to come together. The 27-year-old was also set to meet with the Bills, and Lions this week, but those visits have been 86’d.

Webster’s visit with Houston shouldn’t come as a surprise, as Schefter originally reported last week that Webster was set to sit down with the Texans, Bills, and Lions this week. Houston apparently arranged the Webster’s first visit, and given that no contract has yet been announced, it’s fair to assume the 27-year-old will continue his free agent tour.

Webster spent the first four years of his career as a reserve with the Broncos, but signed a two-year deal with the Rams last spring which reunited him with defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. He started 11 games before going down in December with a torn Achilles, and played like a serviceable starter.

Although Pro Football Focus ranked Webster in the bottom half of its cornerback grades, Webster finished 31st among 81 CBs in Football Outsiders’ success rate, meaning he was effective at stopping wide receivers short of the sticks. FO also charted Webster with allowing 6.8 yard per pass, 38th among cornerbacks.

Given the timeline of his Achilles injury, the Texans will surely want to evaluate Webster’s current health. But he could potentially join a Houston cornerback depth chart that includes Johnathan Joseph, Aaron Colvin, and Kevin Johnson, adding depth in the secondary and on special teams.

Meanwhile, while a hypothetical reunion between Webster and his old Broncos club has been speculatively mentioned, Denver did not make Webster an offer before signing fellow cornerback Adam Jones earlier today, tweets Troy Renck of Denver7.

CB Kayvon Webster To Visit Three Teams

It’s been a quiet offseason for Kayvon Webster, but it sounds like the cornerback is finally lining up some suitors. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports (via Twitter) that the free agent will visit with the Texans, Bills, and Lions next week.

After the Rams added some high-profile cornerbacks to their roster, the team released Webster back in April. While the 27-year-old hasn’t shown the promise that made him a third-round pick out of South Florida in 2013, he has had some productive stretches. He had one of his best NFL seasons in 2017, compiling 38 tackles, seven passes defended, and one interception in 11 games. A torn Achilles’ tendon ended his season in December, and he finished the year in the lower half of Pro Football Focus’ cornerback rankings.

Each of Webster’s three suitors could use some cornerback depth, especially the Lions. The team is currently rostering only three players at the position behind starters Darius Slay and Teez Tabor, so Webster could easily push for a roster spot. The same is true in Buffalo, where the team has only four backups in Phillip Gaines, Taron Johnson, Lafayette Pitts, and Breon Borders.

It might be a bit tougher for the free agent to earn a roster spot in Houston, as the Texans currently have eight cornerbacks on their roster. However, considering Webster’s productive 2017 season, he could logically push for a key reserve role, as he’d have to compete with the likes of Kevin Johnson, Johnson Bademosi, and Treston Decoud.
