Minor NFL Transactions: 12/1/18

Here are Saturday’s minor moves:

Cleveland Browns

Jacksonville Jaguars

New York Jets

Pittsburgh Steelers

Tennessee Titans

Raiders Activate DT Justin Ellis

Justin Ellis played in just one game this season before being placed on IR. He will return, however, for the final games of Jon Gruden‘s first year back.

The Raiders activated Ellis from IR on Saturday, and the fifth-year defensive tackle will be in line to play Sunday against the Chiefs. Oakland waived offensive lineman Denver Kirkland to clear a roster spot.

Re-signed this offseason, Ellis is one of the few Reggie McKenzie draft picks still around in Oakland. The 2014 fourth-round selection has started for most of his career, producing his best season in 2017 — 48 tackles, a half-sack. He’s signed through the 2020 season.

Following Ellis’ IR move, Oakland signed both Johnathan Hankins and Clinton McDonald. Both have served as role players at a defensive tackle spot now housing new Gruden draftees P.J. Hall and Maurice Hurst.

Kirkland played in six games for the Raiders in 2016 and ’18. He served as an extra offensive lineman in power sets during Oakland’s 12-4 2016 campaign but has only made one regular-season appearance since.

Jets To Move Marcus Maye To IR

One of the Jets’ two second-year safety starters won’t finish the season. New York will place Marcus Maye on IR, per ESPN.com’s Field Yates (on Twitter).

Shoulder and thumb ailments kept Maye out of Jets practice all week. The team had already declared him out for Sunday’s game. Maye missed the Jets’ Week 11 game against the Bills and will end up being absent for the team’s final seven games of the season.

It’s been a tough year for Maye, health-wise. The 2017 second-round pick missed the Jets’ offseason program because of ankle surgery, and the thumb injury suffered in October cost him time as well. Maye’s played in just six games this season.

The Utah product did manage to squeeze in a forced fumble and a 104-yard interception return for a score in those six contests, and it’s likely he will be back as a starter for the 2019 Jets alongside Jamal Adams.

Seahawks To Send C.J. Prosise To IR

A C.J. Prosise IR trip will indeed occur for the Seahawks, who made the decision to send the third-year running back to the season-ending injured list Saturday, per the Seattle Times’ Bob Condotta (on Twitter).

The Seahawks will promote linebacker Emmanuel Ellerbee from their practice squad to take Prosise’s place.

Mentioned as an IR candidate earlier this week, Prosise has been unable to stay healthy for much of his NFL career. And he hasn’t made much of an impact in Seattle since his rookie season. This year, Prosise played in five games, accumulating just one carry and three receptions. Chris Carson, Mike Davis and Rashaad Penny have each leapfrogged the former Notre Dame dual-threat performer on the depth chart.

Chosen in the 2016 third round, Prosise briefly held the role of Seahawks passing-down back. But injuries have prevented Prosise from building on that fleeting promise. Seattle brass pondered moving him to wide receiver earlier this year. One season remains on Prosise’s rookie contract, and it stands to reason he won’t have an easy path to next season’s Seattle roster.

Packers Place Mike Daniels On IR

One of the Packers’ best players won’t have a chance to help the team make a last-ditch playoff charge in the coming weeks. Green Bay placed defensive end Mike Daniels on IR.

Wide receiver Trevor Davis will also be moved to the Packers’ IR list. Green Bay will promote fullback Dan Vitale from its practice squad and activate wide receiver Jake Kumerow from IR.

Afflicted with a foot injury, Daniels carried a questionable designation into Sunday’s game against the Cardinals. The standout defensive lineman has been a key component of the past several Green Bay defenses, serving as a full-time player for the past five years. He’s played in 10 Packers games this season.

Green Bay extended Daniels via four-year, $41MM contract during the 2015 season. One year (at a $10.9MM cap number) remains on Daniels’ deal. He made the Pro Bowl last season and has 29 career sacks.

Kumerow returned to Packers practice last week. The Division III product has not played in an NFL game yet, despite being a fourth-year pro. Initially a Bengals UDFA, Kumerow may soon be in line to make his regular-season debut. He’ll replace Davis in the Packers’ receivers room. Davis is the third Packer wideout to land on IR this year, following Kumerow and Geronimo Allison. Kumerow’s activation ensures Allison won’t return in 2018.

Colts Activate OL Joe Haeg

The Colts will be getting some reinforcement on their offensive line. NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports (via Twitter) that the team has activated Joe Haeg from the injured reserve. To make room on the roster, the team has waived Denzelle Good.

Haeg, a 2016 fifth-round pick out of North Dakota State, had started 29 of his 31 games through his first two seasons in the NFL. The 25-year-old started the Colts’ first three games this season, but he landed on the injured reserve towards the end of September. His versatility (he’s previously played right guard, right tackle, left tackle and left guard) will make him a valuable depth piece down the stretch.

The Colts offensive line has been solid this season, so Haeg might not immediately earn his previous starting role (Indy has been rolling with a starting line of Anthony CastonzoQuenton Nelson, Ryan KellyBraden Smith, and Le’Raven Clark). Considering Haeg’s starting experience, he’ll likely see backup reps ahead of Mark GlowinskiEvan Boehm, and Josh Andrews.

Good has been with the Colts since the team selected him in the seventh round of the 2015 draft. The 27-year-old has started 20 of his 26 career games, including one of his two appearances this season.

Dolphins Sign TE Nick O’Leary To Extension

Tight end Nick O’Leary is sticking with Miami for at least one more season. SportsTrust Advisory announced (via Twitter) that their client has signed an extension with the Dolphins. NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport tweets that it’s one-year deal worth $1.5MM ($500K guaranteed).

The 2015 sixth-round pick out of Florida State spent the first three seasons of his career with the Bills, including a 2017 campaign where he hauled in a career-high 22 receptions for 322 yards and two touchdowns. The 26-year-old was released by Buffalo at the end of the preseason, and he subsequently caught on with Miami’s practice squad.

O’Leary was promoted to the Dolphins’ active roster in early October. He’s appeared in seven games (four starts) with Miami, hauling in seven receptions for 77 yards and one score.

Thanks to the extension, the Dolphins now have three tight ends signed for 2019: O’Leary, second-round rookie Mike Gesicki, and fourth-round rookie Durham Smythe. A.J. Derby and MarQueis Gray (who is on the injured reserve with an Achilles injury) are set to become free agents.
