The Bengals are in the books. With less than an hour before the deadline, the Bengals announced a series of roster cuts to take them down to 53. Here’s the full rundown:

For now, this leaves the Bengals with seven wide receivers on the roster: Ja’Marr Chase, Tyler Boyd, Mike Thomas, Auden Tate, Stanley Morgan Jr., Tee Higgins, and Trenton Irwin. Meanwhile, they’re down a couple starters from last year in Michael Jordan and Mike Daniels.

Bengals To Re-Sign Mike Daniels

Mike Daniels isn’t going to be a one and done in Cincinnati. The veteran defensive tackle is re-upping on a new deal with the Bengals, a source told Tom Pelissero of NFL Network (Twitter link).

It’s a one-year contract worth “up to” $2.5MM, Pelissero reports. A fourth-round pick of the Packers back in 2012, Daniels spent his first seven seasons in Green Bay and became a borderline star there. From 2013-17, he had at least four sacks in every season despite weighing over 300 pounds and being primarily a run defender. He made the Pro Bowl in 2017 when he had five sacks and a forced fumble in 14 games.

He had an injury plagued 2018 campaign, and was released the following offseason due to a hefty contract. He was quickly scooped up on a one-year, $9MM deal from the Lions, but injuries limited him to nine games in 2019.

He signed with the Bengals in August of last year, and although he again missed five games, he started the other 11. He had no sacks while playing a less than full-time role. The Iowa product will turn 32 in May.

Bengals Place DT Mike Daniels On IR

The Bengals will be further depleted at defensive tackle when they face the Jaguars on Sunday. They placed Mike Daniels on IR on Saturday.

Daniels, who signed with the Bengals this summer, suffered an elbow injury — one he aggravated during practice this week. Daniels managed a limited practice Thursday but was held out Friday. He will be down for at least three weeks now.

Cincinnati has been without perennial Pro Bowler Geno Atkins all season. Atkins took part in three limited workouts this week but has already been declared out for Week 4. The practice participation points to Atkins getting closer, having not been placed on IR despite what will be a four-week absence.

The team has fellow 2020 acquisitions D.J. Reader and Christian Covington healthy at defensive tackle. Daniels, however, had started both games in which he played this season.

To add help up front, the Bengals are promoting defensive tackle Freedom Akinmoladun. They will also elevate cornerback offensive lineman Alex Redmond and cornerback Torry McTyer from the practice squad.

Bengals Sign DT Mike Daniels

Aug. 12: It’s a done deal, per Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network (via Twitter). Daniels has signed a one-year pact worth up to $2.7MM.

Aug. 11: Mike Daniels‘ Bengals visit will likely lead to a contract. Second-year HC Zac Taylor said Tuesday he expects the team to sign the veteran defensive lineman.

The former Packers and Lions lineman visited Cincinnati over the weekend. The revised CBA restricts teams from conducting visits for exploratory reasons, so a Daniels Ohio trek meant he was squarely on the franchise’s radar. His signing would continue the Bengals’ uncharacteristic offseason.

A team usually cautious with outside free agents has used the market to reshape its defense. Daniels will follow D.J. Reader, Trae Waynes and Mackensie Alexander to Cincinnati. The Bengals look set to carry a seasoned D-tackle corps, with the team already employing Reader and perennial Pro Bowler Geno Atkins. This stands to help a defense that ranked 30th in DVOA last season.

A Daniels-Bengals agreement would also follow the Josh Tupou opt-out decision. The fourth-year contributor started seven games last season and played 467 defensive snaps. His choice to skip the 2020 campaign left the team lacking for depth on its defensive interior.

The Packers gave Daniels a high-end extension late during the 2015 season but released him last summer. The acclaimed inside pass rusher landed with the Lions and played but ended up playing just nine games and 18% of Detroit’s defensive snaps. The 31-year-old defender landed on IR in December. Overall, Daniels has 30 career sacks. He made the Pro Bowl in 2017.
