Chargers Release Darrell Stuckey

The Chargers have released safety Darrell Stuckey with a failed physical designation, tweets James Palmer of NFL Network. Stuckey was on the active/physically unable to perform list with a knee injury that he suffered in the team’s final game of the 2016 season.

The 30-year-old Stuckey had been with the Chargers since they used a fourth-round pick on him in 2010, which made him one of their longest-tenured players. Stuckey appeared in 89 games with the Bolts, including all 16 last year, and never made a significant defensive impact. However, he was regularly among their most reliable special teamers. Stuckey paced the unit in snaps last season (368), and he earned a Pro Bowl berth for his output in that phase of the game in 2014.

Thanks to his superb work on special teams, Stuckey was more expensive than most players who specialize in that area. Releasing him saves the Chargers $2.9MM (compared to $433,750 in dead money), but it wasn’t an easy decision for general manager Tom Telesco.

“For the past seven years, Darrell has been a difference maker for our franchise both on and off the field,” Telesco said in a press release (via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk). “He followed up a Pro Bowl season in 2014 by being named the Chargers Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2015. You couldn’t ask for a better person to represent the organization than Darrell, and we want to sincerely thank him not only for what he has meant to the Chargers, but for what he has meant to the community as a whole. Darrell, his wife Lacie, and his children will always be part of the Chargers family, and we wish them all the best now and in the future.”

Chargers Place Eric Weddle, Others On IR

1:50pm: The Chargers have confirmed that Weddle has officially been placed on IR, one of six moves today affecting the club’s 53-man roster. Here’s the full list:

12:59pm: Veteran safety Eric Weddle may have played his last game with the Chargers. After injuring his groin in the team’s Week 16 contest against the Raiders, Weddle is being placed on injured reserve by San Diego, ending his season, per Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Weddle, who will turn 31 next Monday, has been with the Chargers since being selected by the club in the second ronud of the 2007 draft. In his nine seasons with San Diego, he has appeared in 137 total regular season games (122 starts), earning three Pro Bowl berths and two All-Pro nods. The 2015 campaign was his first year without an interception — he has racked up 19 over the course of his career.

With Weddle’s contract set to expire, the Utah product appears likely to continue his NFL career with a team besides the Chargers. While he had some interest in engaging in extension discussions with San Diego earlier in the year, the team didn’t reciprocate that interest, prompting agent David Canter to suggest that his client would look forward to hitting free agency in the offseason. Unless the Chargers decide to use their franchise tag on Weddle, he looks like a good bet to reach the open market.

The Chargers will make a corresponding move to fill Weddle’s spot on the roster, but that transactions hasn’t been reported or announced yet.

  • Everson Griffen‘s $19.8MM of guaranteed money in his new deal with the Vikings comes from a $6MM signing bonus and fully guaranteed $6.9MM base salaries in 2014 and 2015, tweets Joel Corry of CBSSports.com. Griffen has a $8.2MM cap number in 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017 and his cap number rises to $9.7MM in 2018, Corry tweets.If the Vikings cut Griffen after the 2015 season, they owe him nothing and take just a $3.6M cap hit, tweets Tom Pelissero of USA Today.
  • Michael Mitchell‘s five-year, $25MM deal with the Steelers calls for him to earn $6MM in the first year followed by a $2MM roster bonus due on the fifth day of 2015 league year, tweets Tom Pelissero of USA Today.

  • Earl Mitchell‘s deal with the Dolphins is as follows, according to Wilson (Twitter link): It’s a four-year, $19MM with $8MM guaranteed and a $2MM bonus. The salaries are $3MM, $4MM, $2.975MM, and $3.975MM .
  • In the Chiefs‘ two-year deal for Husain Abdullah, he’ll get $2.27MM in total with a $750K signing bonus, Wilson tweets. His salaries are $725K in 2014 and $745K in 2015.
  • Andre Roberts‘ four-year contract with the Redskins includes a $4MM signing bonus, tweets Zac Boyer of the Washington Times. He’ll count $2.25MM against the cap in 2014.

Darrell Stuckey, Chargers Agree To Deal

The Chargers and safety Darrell Stuckey have agreed to a multi-year contract, reports Ricky Henne of Chargers.com (via Twitter). The 26-year old has mostly played on special teams in his short career in San Diego. Eric D. Williams of ESPN.com reports that according to Stuckey the contract is a four-year deal (via Twitter).

Details of the contract have yet to be released, but it can be assumed that although Stuckey has been a top special teams player when healthy, his contract will be at or close to the minimum salary for a fifth year player.
