With Trevor Lawrence currently in concussion protocol, the Jaguars have added some QB depth to the organization. John Wolford brings four games of starting experience to Jacksonville, all coming with the Rams between 2020 and 2022. The Wake Forest product went 2-2 in those appearances, tossing one touchdown vs. five interceptions. He’ll slide in behind Mac Jones and C.J. Beathard in the franchise’s QB pecking order.
The Eagles added a veteran fullback to their roster in Khari Blasingame. The 28-year-old has appeared in 66 games since entering the league in 2019, collecting 131 yards from scrimmage on 24 carries. The Eagles recently lost part-time fullback Ben VanSumeren for the season, opening a role for a handful of blocking snaps per game.
Minor NFL Transactions: 12/3/24
Today’s minor moves:
Arizona Cardinals
- Waived: DE Ronnie Perkins
Las Vegas Raiders
- Signed to active roster: RB Sincere McCormick
- Placed on IR: WR DJ Turner
Minnesota Vikings
- Waived: LS Jake McQuaide
San Francisco 49ers
- Claimed off waivers (from Jets): RB Israel Abanikanda
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- Signed to active roster (from Lions practice squad): S Kaevon Merriweather
Tennessee Titans
- Suspended: S Julius Wood
Sincere McCormick has seen a larger role in recent weeks as a practice squad elevation, and now the running back will be secured to the Raiders active roster. After spending the past few years hanging around the organization, the former UDFA finally made his NFL debut earlier this season. With the Raiders dealing with a depleted RB room in recent weeks, McCormick has seen an uptick in snaps, culminating in him collecting 65 yards from scrimmage on Black Friday.
Julius Wood has been hit with a six-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs. The safety will now be sidelined for the rest of the 2024 campaign and one game in 2025. The undrafted rookie has appeared in nine games this season, with the majority of his snaps coming on special teams.
Browns Re-Sign QB Bailey Zappe
Bailey Zappe has landed back on Cleveland’s active roster. After getting suddenly waived by the Browns yesterday, the quarterback has re-signed with the squad, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 in Houston.
Zappe has spent more than a month in Cleveland, with the Browns plucking him from the Chiefs’ practice squad following Deshaun Watson‘s season-ending injury. Jameis Winston has since run with the starting gig, leaving Zappe on the sideline.
The former fourth-round pick showed some flashes during his two seasons in New England. Zappe went 4-4 as a starter while completing 63.2 percent of his passes for 2,053 yards, 11 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. The Western Kentucky product got a longer look as a sophomore and saw his completion percentage drop and his interception percentage rise.
With the Patriots adding three QBs this past offseason (Drake Maye, Jacoby Brissett, Joe Milton), Zappe was the odd man out. He was waived by New England during final roster cuts, and he subsequently landed in a solid situation on Kansas City’s practice squad.
Zappe will be hard pressed to earn his ninth career start in Cleveland. If Winston somehow needs to be replaced, the Browns would likely opt for Dorian Thompson-Robinson under center.
More On Bears’ Decision To Fire Matt Eberflus
Matt Eberflus became the first Bears head coach in franchise history to get canned in-season. Considering the long list of questionable calls and demoralizing losses, the move didn’t come as a complete surprise…especially to those in the building.

According to Adam Jahns and Dianna Russini of The Athletic, players were especially “furious” following Chicago’s loss on Thursday. Many players questioned Eberflus’s decision to not call a timeout before the last play, with team captain Jaylon Johnson described as especially “emotional.”
“We felt as players it’s been too many instances where we fought our way back into games to lose because of bad time management and decision-making,” one player told The Athletic.
One staffer noted that the post-game locker room “was ugly” and featured “a lot of yelling.” While Eberflus tried calming down his squad with a speech, he didn’t hang around while his players continued to fume. Eberflus’s uncharacteristic exit from the locker room could have also been due to the presence of team president Kevin Warren, who notably hung around the team much longer than usual following the Thanksgiving debacle.
The locker room outburst appeared to be a long time coming. As The Athletic notes, Ebereflus’s recent attempts to take accountability for the team’s mounting losses appeared to be “insincere” and countered his differing tone from earlier in the season. While the now-former HC also tried saving face by firing offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, there were many in the locker room who believed Waldron wasn’t the right choice from the get-go.
Specifically, the offensive coordinator came in and installed a “pure progression passing system,” a concept that’s difficult for any QB. With Caleb Williams leading the way under center, some players voiced concerns that the staff wasn’t putting the rookie in a position to succeed. It went beyond the passing offense, as well; Waldron scrapped “two years of progress under offensive line coach Chris Morgan” by completely revamping the team’s running attack.
“Where they messed up was with Shane and making him the coordinator to begin with,” one player told The Athletic.
Chicago had a 4-2 record heading into the bye week, and the team’s demise was surely a collective effort. Still, Eberflus was going to be the clear scapegoat. Curiously, Eberflus met with the media hours before his firing. The Athletic notes that Morgan, chairman George McCaskey, and GM Ryan Poles were still meeting during that scheduled press conference, and the trio didn’t want to signal that “something big was happening” by cancelling Eberflus’s presser.
We’ve heard from Eberflus for the first time since the aforementioned press conference. The former HC released a statement this morning (h/t NBCChicago.com):
“I would like to thank the McCaskey family and Ryan Poles for the opportunity to be the head coach of the Chicago Bears … I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the players for all of their effort, dedication and resilience. In every situation – practice, games and especially in the face of adversity, you stayed together and gave great effort for your team and each other … What I am most proud of was the way you carried yourself both on and off the field and represented the Bears organization with class in the community … To the fans, thank you for your support and passion. I will always have a deep appreciation for the Bears organization and the city of Chicago.”
If there’s any silver lining, there seems to be growing optimism surrounding interim head coach Thomas Brown. The team’s former passing game coordinator was promoted to OC following Waldron’s firing, and The Athletic notes that the coach’s “communication style and leadership skills earned the respect of players and staff.”
Eagles LB/FB Ben VanSumeren Done For Season
Ben VanSumeren is done for the season. The Eagles linebacker/special teamer/part-time fullback suffered a season-ending knee injury during Friday’s practice, according to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer. VanSumeren is set to undergo more testing to determine the extent of the injury, but the initial diagnosis indicated that the player will miss the rest of the campaign.
The former UDFA caught on with the Eagles ahead of the 2023 campaign. He proceeded to get into nine games (one start) as a rookie, compiling 13 tackles while playing 180 of his 230 total snaps on special teams.
VanSumeren has seen a different role during his sophomore season. The 24-year-old has continued to play on special teams (213 snaps), but his defensive gig has completely disappeared. However, he has earned a job on the other side of the ball. As McLane notes, VanSumeren has served as the team’s fullback since they “shifted to more of a run-based offense” post-bye. VanSumeren was recruited to Michigan as a fullback, and that experience helped garner him some extra snaps in 2024.
While VanSumeren is a respected member of Philly’s special teams unit, the team’s more pressing need will come on offense. McLane suggests that practice squad tight end C.J. Uzomah might be the best option to serve as fullback during those handful of plays each game.
Dawn Aponte Drawing Interest For Front Office Jobs
Dawn Aponte could soon make history as the first woman to lead an NFL front office. Dianna Russini of The Athletic writes that Aponte is drawing “real” interest from NFL teams that are seeking either new general managers or team presidents.
Aponte is no stranger to high-level roles. She currently serves as the NFL’s chief administrator of football operations, and she previously held high-ranking roles with the Jets, Dolphins, and Browns. Aponte started gaining momentum for GM gigs last offseason when she interviewed for the Chargers job, and she also met with the Commanders about a top front office role.
In a sport that’s historically been dominated by male leadership, Aponte’s inclusion in these job searches isn’t “about optics” nor an attempt “to demonstrate [the league’s] commitment to diversity and women in leadership,” per Russini. Rather, the executive has earned a reputation as a strong front office leader, with one source saying she’d be the perfect choice to “carry out ownership’s vision while creating streamlined processes, forcing accountability, and aligning the organization at all levels.”
Due to her lack of scouting and player personnel experience, Russini says Aponte would likely be paired with an executive who could focus solely on “the roster-building side of things.” This would better allow Aponte to handle “structure and alignment,” and her leadership and strategy skills would make her the natural leader among the new hires.
“She’s a tough, no-nonsense leader with a better resume and background in football than most of the men up for these jobs,” one coach told Russini. “This should be the year she gets a shot.”
Aponte’s name recently popped up in relation to the Jets’ front office opening. Former Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum was recently brought on by his former team to help assist in the GM search. Tannenbaum and Aponte worked alongside each other in Miami, and there’s a sentiment that Tannenbaum’s desire “to do things differently” could lead to Aponte earning a role with the organization.
Lions Waive LB James Houston
James Houston‘s stint in Detroit has come to an end. The Lions announced that they waived the pass rusher today.
A 2022 sixth-round pick, Houston made his NFL debut late in his rookie campaign. The Florida/Jackson State product ended up being a standout down the stretch of that season, compiling eight sacks in seven appearances. The Lions were hoping for even more in 2023, but Houston was limited to only a pair of games thanks to a fibula injury.
Houston has seen an inconsistent role in 2024. He was pushed out of the lineup towards the beginning of the season by Marcus Davenport, but he started seeing more snaps once Aidan Hutchinson went down. Houston has seen time in each of the past six games for Detroit, but the team has also given extended looks to Al-Quadin Muhammad, Za’Darius Smith, Isaac Ukwu, and Isaiah Thomas opposite Josh Paschal. Ultimately, Houston was the odd man out.
“It just never quite worked out,” coach Dan Campbell said today (via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press). “And look, wish him the best of luck, and sometimes you just need a fresh start and this could be great for him, so wish him the best.”
Based on Campbell’s comments, it sounds like Houston won’t resurface on Detroit’s practice squad. Instead, the third-year player will look to revive his career elsewhere.
Minor NFL Transactions: 11/26/24
Today’s minor moves:
Houston Texans
- Placed on IR: CB Ka’dar Hollman (story)
Kansas City Chiefs
- Placed on IR: TE Peyton Hendershot

New Orleans Saints

Seattle Seahawks
- Claimed off waivers (from Chargers): S A.J. Finley
- Waived: DT Myles Adams
The Patriots moved on from one of their OL starters today. Michael Jordan started all 11 games for New England this season, although that was mostly due to necessity. The veteran lineman ranks 73rd among 77 qualifying guards on Pro Football Focus’ positional rankings. A former fourth-round pick, Jordan also has starting experience with the Bengals and Panthers.
New England will be replacing Jordan with Lester Cotton, who has spent the past few seasons in Miami. The lineman started a career-high eight games for the Dolphins in 2023, but he basically split his 100ish snaps between offense and special teams in 2024. The former UDFA could have a chance at more OL opportunities with his new squad.

The Chiefs are set to roll with their third kicker of the season. With Harrison Butker on IR and Spencer Shrader sidelined with a hamstring injury, Kansas City had to add yet another leg to the roster. The team opted for Matthew Wright, who already has experience kicking with the franchise. Wright filled in for Butker twice in 2022, connecting on three field goals and eight extra points.
Wright has only got one extended look as a starter (when he got into 14 games with the Jaguars in 2021), but he’s still managed to get into at least one game per season over the past few years. Wright has already made an appearance in 2024, when he was responsible for 12 points in the 49ers win over the Seahawks last month.
Vikings Sign LB Jamin Davis, Place LB Ivan Pace On IR
The Vikings made a handful of changes to their linebackers corps today. The team’s newest addition is Jamin Davis, who was signed to the 53-man roster from the Packers practice squad. The team also activated linebacker Gabe Murphy off injured reserve and placed linebacker Ivan Pace on IR.
A former first-round pick by the Commanders, Davis was let go by Washington last month. The linebacker showed flashes through his first three seasons in the NFL, including 2022 and 2023 campaigns where he started 28 games while compiling 193 total tackles, six sacks, and two forced fumbles. With a new staff in Washington, Davis found himself on the outside looking in with his squad. After having his fifth-year option declined, the fourth-year player only saw time on 86 defensive snaps in five games this year.
Davis was quickly scooped up by the Packers, who stashed the new addition on the practice squad. After spending almost one month on Green Bay’s taxi squad, Davis will return to an active roster in Minnesota.
The newest addition will likely be taking the spot held by Pace, who has started all nine of his appearances in 2024. The former UDFA has settled into an important role as a sophomore, collecting 59 tackles and three sacks. Pace suffered a hamstring injury on Sunday that limited him to only five defensive snaps. He’ll now have to miss at least the next four games, with his earliest return marked for December 29 against the Packers.
Blake Cashman will continue to lead the linebackers depth chart, with Kamu Grugier-Hill and Brian Asamoah mixing in with Davis for the leftover snaps. The team clearly likes Murphy, a UDFA out of UCLA, but the rookie will likely be eyeing a special teams role for the stretch run of the season. Murphy landed on IR before the season with a knee injury.
