Minor NFL Transactions: 9/16/24

Today’s minor moves:

Kansas City Chiefs

New England Patriots

Philadelphia Eagles

Peyton Hendershot made headlines in Week 1, with the tight end earning a fine after participating in a shoving match in defense of QB Patrick Mahomes. Hendershot wasn’t even active for that contest, but he made his Chiefs debut yesterday and got into seven special teams snaps. The former UDFA out of Indiana was traded by the Cowboys to the Chiefs at the end of August. As DLLS’s Clarence Hill Jr. notes, today’s move means the Cowboys won’t receive the 2026 conditional seventh-round pick from the Chiefs.

Minor NFL Transactions: 9/6/24

Friday’s minor moves as we continue with Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season:

Carolina Panthers

Denver Broncos

Green Bay Packers

Los Angeles Rams

Philadelphia Eagles

Washington Commanders

The Packers and Eagles both elect to utilize their two gameday practice squad elevations on the offensive side of the ball as they get their seasons started in São Paulo. With rookie third-round rusher MarShawn Lloyd out to start the season, Merriweather will add some depth at running back for Green Bay.

Philadelphia will use their callups to supplement an offensive line that has two players listed as out tonight and one on injured reserve. A normally deep tight ends group for the Birds sees Albert Okwuegbunam on IR, as well. Jenkins will back up Dallas Goedert and Grant Calcaterra.

Eagles Cut Down Roster To 53 Players

The Eagles are hoping to rebound from a disappointing end to their 2023 campaign. Before they can do that, the team had to make some tough roster decisions as they got down to 53 players. The team announced the following moves:

Released:

Waived:

Waived/injured:

Placed on IR (designated for return):

Placed on reserve/PUP:

After carrying only four wideouts on their initial 53-man roster in 2023, the team is carrying five WRs heading into 2024. Still, some notable names earned their walking papers today. Parris Campbell is only two years removed from a 63-catch season with the Colts, but the wideout was limited to only 20 receptions with the Giants in 2023. John Ross continues to get opportunities by virtue of his first-round billing, but the former ninth-overall pick hasn’t seen the field since a 10-game showing with the Giants in 2021.

Oren Burks missed a chunk of the summer with an injury, but his release is still a bit of a surprise. The former third-round pick spent the past two seasons with the 49ers, where he started eight of his 32 appearances. The veteran has also made a name for himself on special teams, where he’s averaged more than 277 snaps per season.

Teams can begin signing players to reserve/futures contracts Jan. 8. P-squad contracts expire seven days after the regular season concludes, and NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero reminds teams are not limited regarding the number of times they can elevate a player from a taxi squad during the playoffs. In the regular season, players are capped at three gameday elevations.

The Panthers are expected to sign Boone to a futures deal next week, per the Denver Gazette’s Chris Tomasson. After three years with the Vikings and two with the Broncos, Boone played in nine games with the Texans this season. As for Wright, this marks a reunion. While Wright’s first Panthers stay did not last long (Aug. 26-30), Carolina may need him due to Eddy Pineiro‘s hamstring injury.

Amid the Jets’ wave of O-line injuries, they signed Saffold. While the former Rams, Titans and Bills starter was with the Jets for several weeks, he did not see any game action in his 14th NFL season.

With Matthew Stafford questionable for Week 9, the Rams are adding some additional QB depth. Winn had a standout career at UT Martin before going undrafted in this year’s draft. The QB spent training camp with the Rams before eventually joining the Edmonton Elks in the CFL. As Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic notes, the signing is especially notable considering Winn also punted in college; Rams punter Ethan Evans is currently dealing with a sprained ankle.

Jets Set 53-Man Roster

The Jets have been in the limelight all offseason, and some of their lesser-known players have earned attention following the team’s participation in HBO’s Hard Knocks. The team had to move on from many of those unheralded players today, as the organization reduced their roster to 53 players:

Released:

Waived:

Placed on reserve/PUP:

Placed on IR:

Placed on reserve/suspended:

Zonovan Knight made a name for himself as an UDFA in 2022. The running back was thrust into the Jets starting lineup, and he ultimately started four of his seven appearances. The RB finished the season with 400 yards from scrimmage and one touchdown on 98 touches. With Dalvin Cook added to a deep RBs depth chart, Knight seemed like a long shot to make the final roster.

Tim Boyle has bounced around the NFL a bit, but his only starting experience came with the Lions in 2021. The quarterback spent the 2022 campaign in Chicago, completing two of his eight pass attempts. It was uncertain if the Jets would keep three QBs on the roster, but the team appears content with just Aaron Rodgers and Zach Wilson at the position.

Jets Sign 13 UDFAs

The Jets have announced their 2023 crop of undrafted free agents. Here is the breakdown of rookies who will look to compete for a roster spot this summer:

New York has made a few sizeable financial commitments amongst this group. That includes $110K in guaranteed money for Jenkins, as noted (on Twitter) by Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2. Jenkins’ lone campaign with the Yellow Jackets came last season, after he saw time at South Carolina. The 6-7, 243-pounder posted 316 yards and three touchdowns on just 17 receptions, showing big-play potential for his size.

The Jets have also given a six-figure guarantee to Dean, per Wilson (Twitter link). The former Gator will receive $100K following a highly productive five-year college career. Dean recorded one interception in each of his first four campaigns, and racked up a total of 18 pass deflections as evidence of his ball skills. He added 255 stops, 13.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks in Florida, making him a versatile addition to the secondary for at least the short-term future.

Dye transferred to USC last season after four years at Oregon. The 5-10, 200-pounder eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for the first time with the Ducks in 2021, totaling 1,271 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground. He remained an efficient rusher in his lone Trojans campaign by averaging 6.1 yards per carry. Dye recorded 1,086 scrimmage yards and nine total touchdowns in 2022, but will face competition from fourth-rounder Israel Abanikanda for the third RB spot on the depth chart.
