Szmyt spent time on the Bears’ practice squad last year before playing with the USFL’s St. Louis Battlehawks recently. The 26-year-old terminated his pact with the spring league club to take a deal in Cleveland. A former All-American and Lou Graza winner as the country’s top kicker during his college career, Szmyt could see time late in the year given the Browns’ kicking struggles in 2024.
Thomas appeared to be on his way to join the Colts after he was claimed off waivers by Indianapolis. The veteran corner failed his physical upon arrival with his new team, however, leading to another trip to the waiver wire. No teams put in a claim this time around, but shortly after reaching free agency Thomas has landed a deal. The former 49er has 42 games and 11 starts to his name, and he will provide Minnesota with cornerback depth through the closing stages of the campaign.
Minor NFL Transactions: 9/6/24
Friday’s minor moves as we continue with Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season:
Carolina Panthers
- Waived (with injury settlement): WR Devin Carter
Denver Broncos
- Waived (with injury settlement): OLB Durell Nchami
Green Bay Packers
- Elevated: RB Ellis Merriweather
Los Angeles Rams
- Waived (with injury settlement): DE Anthony Goodlow
Philadelphia Eagles
- Elevated: OL Nick Gates, TE E.J. Jenkins
Washington Commanders
- Released (with injury settlement): T Armani Taylor-Prioleau
The Packers and Eagles both elect to utilize their two gameday practice squad elevations on the offensive side of the ball as they get their seasons started in São Paulo. With rookie third-round rusher MarShawn Lloyd out to start the season, Merriweather will add some depth at running back for Green Bay.
Philadelphia will use their callups to supplement an offensive line that has two players listed as out tonight and one on injured reserve. A normally deep tight ends group for the Birds sees Albert Okwuegbunam on IR, as well. Jenkins will back up Dallas Goedert and Grant Calcaterra.
Wednesday NFL Transactions: NFC North
Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline Tuesday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters. In addition to waiver claims, teams can begin constructing their 16-man practice squads today. These Bears, Lions, Packers and Vikings moves are noted below.

Packers Announce 53-Man Roster
The Packers featured the youngest roster in the NFL last season, and they’re set to return most of that young core in 2024. Still, the team had to move on from a long list of inexperienced players as they pared their roster down to 53 players. The organization announced the following roster moves today:

Linebacker Kristian Welch brings the most experience of the bunch, with the former UDFA appearing in 57 career games in time with the Ravens and Packers. He spent the 2023 campaign in Green Bay, where he played all 210 of his snaps on special teams. Considering his limited experience on defense, there’s a chance the Packers are tinkering with their roster and intend to bring the veteran back via the practice squad.

WR Kenny Golladay Worked Out For Jets
A former Pro Bowler worked out for the Jets yesterday. Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, wide receiver Kenny Golladay auditioned for the Jets. However, a signing isn’t imminent, with Pelissero reporting that the Jets aren’t signing the free agent “at this time.”
Golladay is persona non grata in New York following a brutal tenure with the Giants. Golladay inked a four-year, $72MM contract only two offseasons ago, and following a first season in New York where he was limited to 521 yards in 14 games, he had only six catches in 12 games last year. Following those two forgettable seasons, Golladay was cut loose by the Giants back in March.
The Jets were banking on Golladay still possessing some of the talent he showed during his time in Detroit. Between the 2018 and 2019 campaigns, Golladay had 135 catches for 2,253 yards and 16 touchdowns.
The Jets haven’t done much to fill the spot previously held by Corey Davis, so there could be a role in New York for Golladay. Behind Garrett Wilson and Allen Lazard, the Jets are eyeing Mecole Hardman and Randall Cobb as their top backup wideouts. The team is also rostering Irvin Charles and UDFAs Jason Brownlee and Xavier Gipson.
Golladay wasn’t the only free agent who worked out for the Jets yesterday. Per Pelissero, the team also hosted quarterback Anthony Brown, running back Ellis Merriweather, and wide receivers James Proche and Jeff Smith.

Saints Officially Set 53-Man Roster
The Saints welcomed back some old faces and said goodbye to others on their way towards setting their initial 53-man roster. Here are the moves the team made in their efforts to select the team they will open the season with:
Released:
- LB Ryan Connelly
- TE J.P. Holtz
- TE Jesse James
- T Storm Norton
- CB Bradley Roby
- LB Jaylon Smith
- LB Ty Summers
- RB Darrel Williams
Waived:
- S Johnathan Abram
- LB Nick Anderson
- WR Kawaan Baker
- FB Jake Bargas
- WR Lynn Bowden
- DL Jerron Cage
- WR Shaq Davis
- DT Prince Emili
- OL Mark Evans II
- G Chuck Filiaga
- DB Adrian Frye
- P Blake Gillikin
- DT Jack Heflin
- DB Anthony Johnson
- OL Lewis Kidd
- WR Jontrae Kirklin
- G Tommy Kraemer
- TE Lucas Krull
- DE Niko Lalos
- RB Ellis Merriweather
- S Smoke Monday
- LB Anfernee Orji
- DE Kyle Phillips
- OL Alex Pihlstrom
- DB Troy Pride
- OL Calvin Throckmorton
The veteran tight end James will have to continue his recent tour of the NFL. He, Holtz, and Krull fell victim to the reunion of New Orleans and former All-Pro Jimmy Graham.
On defense, Smith failed to make the roster after starting 11 games for the Giants last year. Roby is another player who was initially expected to contribute, but will have to pack up his locker.
With the emergence of rookie third-round pick Kendre Miller and the eventual return of Alvin Kamara, keeping Williams in the running backs room just wasn’t worth the roster spot.
On special teams, the third-year punter Gillikin lost the punting battle with undrafted rookie signee out of Miami (FL) Lou Hedley. The viral, jacked, tatted-up, Australian, 30-year-old rookie punter makes his first NFL roster as part of the Saints’ new-look special teams group.
