NFL Practice Squad Updates: 12/12/25
Today’s NFL practice squad transactions:
Cleveland Browns
- Released from practice squad/injured list: LB Cameron McGrone
Denver Broncos
- Signed: TE Marcedes Lewis
Miami Dolphins
- Signed: TE Hayden Rucci
Ever the quintessential veteran, Lewis serves as the perfect example of how we explain the standard gameday practice squad elevation each year. Denver signed Lewis to their taxi squad just before November and was called up as a gameday elevation three weeks in a row. In order to get him into another game this past weekend, the Broncos signed Lewis to their 53-man roster. They waived him yesterday and have now signed him back to the p-squad after he cleared waivers. Under a new practice squad deal, Lewis’ three-elevation limit soul
Lions Open G Christian Mahogany’s Practice Window
Left guards are beginning to dominate our late-afternoon coverage window. In addition to Broncos LG Ben Powers returning to practice amid a lengthy IR stay, the Lions will see their starting option do the same.
Christian Mahogany is back at practice, with KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson noting the first-year starter is in the IR-return window. Like Powers in Denver, Detroit will have three weeks to activate Mahogany or lose him to season-ending IR.
Unlike Powers, Mahogany has only missed five games. The second-year blocker started the first eight Lions contests before going down with a knee injury. This will certainly be welcome news for a Detroit team in the thick of the wild-card race — and one that just saw Frank Ragnow‘s comeback attempt fall by the wayside.
Detroit has used Kayode Awosika, who has been with the team as a backup since 2022, as Mahogany’s replacement. Mahogany resided as a backup last season, with the Lions rostering Ragnow and Kevin Zeitler. Prior to Ragnow’s retirement, Zeitler defected to the Titans in free agency. Pro Football Focus has graded Mahogany fairly well in his first real go-round as a starter, ranking him 31st among guards this season. PFF slots Awosika 47th, which is still passable since 80 guards qualify as regulars this season.
This is not exactly good news on the level of Ragnow’s surprise unretirement, but after a hamstring injury surfaced during his physical, no such effort will take place this season. That scenario would have given the Lions an option of sliding center Graham Glasgow to guard, where he has extensive experience. Now, Glasgow will stay put as Mahogany readies to return.
The Lions also claimed defensive back Jalen Mills off waivers from the Texans, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport tweets. To make room on the 53-man roster, Detroit waived tight end Hayden Rucci. A 92-game starter during a career that has included extensive time at both safety and cornerback, Mills has played in four games (starting one) this season. Houston waived him Tuesday.
Mills, 31, has not played regularly at corner since 2022. Making a successful transition to safety, Mills has still seen regular time in the slot over the past three seasons — spent with the Patriots, Jets and Texans. Houston signed Mills to a one-year, $1.26MM deal; Detroit will be responsible for just less than $300K.
This comes after Brian Branch suffered an Achilles tear in Week 14; the standout defender already underwent surgery. Kerby Joseph has not played since Week 6, leaving the Lions in a tough spot. They are also down Terrion Arnold for the season. Joseph is aiming to return before season’s end.

The Lions continue to work through their tight end depth with Sam LaPorta done for the season. The team’s first move today was claiming Hayden Rucci, who was waived by the Dolphins on Saturday. A former UDFA out of Wisconsin, Rucci spent much of the 2024 and 2025 campaigns in Miami. He got into four games with the organization this season, with the majority of his snaps coming on special teams.
The Lions also welcomed Shane Zylstra back to practice today. The tight end has been out since Week 2, when he suffered an ankle injury while blocking on a punt return. The veteran has gotten into 31 games with the Lions since the 2021 season, hauling in 15 catches for 116 yards and four touchdowns.
Otherwise, the Lions placed center Frank Ragnow back on the reserve/retired list after the veteran failed his physical.
Dolphins Activate Austin Jackson From IR
The Dolphins have gone almost all season without right tackle Austin Jackson, who landed on IR after a Week 1 loss to the Colts. Jackson is now ready to return, though, as the team activated him on Saturday, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Jackson suffered a toe injury in the Dolphins’ opener, leading to a 10-game absence. Larry Borom took over as left-handed quarterback Tua Tagovailoa‘s blindside protector at right tackle while Jackson was out. Borom, who has played 600 offensive snaps this year, ranks as Pro Football Focus’ 57th-best tackle out of 81 qualifiers.
A first-round pick in 2020, Jackson has started in 55 of 57 games in his five-plus seasons with the Dolphins. Injuries have been a frequent problem for Jackson, however, as he missed 15 games in 2022 and has sat out 19 of 27 since last season.
Jackson’s under contract through 2026 on a three-year, $36MM extension, but that December 2023 agreement came with former general manager Chris Grier at the controls. The Dolphins parted with Grier in October. His successor, whether it’s interim GM Champ Kelly or someone else, will decide Jackson’s future in the offseason. The 26-year-old could be a candidate for release then. In the meantime, he’ll aim for a healthy finish to the season.
Along with activating Jackson and tight end Darren Waller (previously reported), the Dolphins waived offensive lineman Kion Smith and TE Hayden Rucci on Saturday.
Part of the Miami organization since 2021, Smith has totaled 20 appearances with the team. He got into nine games in 2023 before missing all of 2024 with a torn ACL. Smith returned to play in the Dolphins’ first 11 games this year, picking up a pair of starts along the way.
Rucci, undrafted from Wisconsin in 2024, made his first four appearances this year. He totaled 81 snaps (42 on special teams, 39 on offense) before the Dolphins cut him.

After trading safety Kyle Dugger earlier this week, the Patriots have added some depth at the position, as the team snagged John Saunders Jr. off Miami’s practice squad. The rookie went undrafted out of Ole Miss in this year’s draft, and he quickly found a job with the Dolphins. He’s spent the entire season on Miami’s taxi squad, and now he’s set to make his NFL debut with their division rivals.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- Elevated: QB Connor Bazelak, OLB Mohamed Kamara
Tennessee Titans
- Elevated: WR James Proche
Recently named QB2 Shedeur Sanders found his way to the injury report today with a back injury. By elevating Zappe, Cleveland is ensuring Sanders won’t play tomorrow, since in order to have three quarterbacks dressed for gameday, all three passers must be on the 53-man roster. Zappe will back up Dillon Gabriel, and Sanders will likely be in sweats. Similarly in Carolina, with Bryce Young set to sit this week, Hooker has been called up to back up Andy Dalton.
Both Buccaneers quarterbacks, Baker Mayfield and Teddy Bridgewater, were on the injury report this week, though neither received a “questionable” injury designation as result of their ailments. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported that both passers are expected to be available, but with Bazelak taking up a spot on the active roster, it seems likely that only one other quarterback will be suited up alongside the practice squad callup. Because Bazelak’s not on the 53-man roster, only two passers can be active. Tampa Bay can still designate Bazelak as the inactive third quarterback, but doing so would seemingly be making this elevation moot.
There is no corresponding move necessary for Philadelphia to add Cooper. The team received a two-game roster exemption after signing veteran defensive end Brandon Graham, so they had an open roster spot.
For Basham in Carolina and Jennings in New England, this will be their third and final standard gameday practice squad elevations. If either of their respective teams want them to play in another game this season, they will need to first be signed to the 53-man roster.

Waived/injured:
Waived (with injury settlement):
Placed on IR (designated for return):
Placed on reserve/PUP:
In four seasons with the team, Eichenberg has started at every position on the offensive line. The Dolphins will miss his versatility while he’s out, but head coach Mike McDaniel confirmed recently that Eichenberg’s injury is not a season-ending one.
Sanders’ hip injury landed him on injured reserve, meaning Miami will be without him for at least the first month of the season. To deal with his absence, the Dolphins hosted four veteran kickers — Zane Gonzalez, Greg Joseph, Riley Patterson, and Eddy Pineiro — for tryouts today, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Besides that, there weren’t many surprises in the cuts today. Tindall had been a core special teamer for each of his first three years in Miami but may have to find his way to the field through the practice squad. According to Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network, Murphy had a really strong summer with the team and should be back on the practice squad, as long as he clears waivers.
