Bengals’ Dax Hill Wants To Stay At Outside CB; Jalen Davis Favorite For Slot Role
Bengals cornerback Dax Hill split time between the slot and the outside in 2025, the second 17-start season of his four-year career. As Hill prepares to enter a contract year in 2026, he wants a full-time spot on the outside, per Kelsey Conway of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
“Staying at one spot, I feel like that’s ideal for development and my mental health,” said Hill, whom the Bengals drafted as a safety in 2022. The former 31st overall pick from Michigan transitioned to corner in 2024, though an ACL tear limited him to five games that year.
In his return to full strength last season, Hill led Bengals corners in defensive snap share (92.93%) and recorded 88 tackles, 11 passes defensed and an interception. Pro Football Focus ranked Hill a respectable 46th among 108 qualifying corners, but he fared even better after moving outside for good late in the season. The 6-foot, 195-pounder earned PFF’s third-highest grade among corners over the last six weeks of the year.
Staying on the outside and performing similarly well in 2026 would bode nicely for Hill as he angles for a new contract. Outside corners make more money than slot CBs, which is likely on Hill’s mind. The Bengals have identified Hill and fellow soon-to-be free agent corner DJ Turner as extension candidates, but keeping both could be a challenge. The team may have drafted a potential replacement for one of them in third-rounder Tacario Davis, the 72nd overall pick.
At 6-foot-4, Davis is better suited for outside corner. The Washington product will likely begin his pro career as a reserve, though it could depend on how the Bengals handle the slot position. Jalen Davis is the frontrunner for the job, according to Conway, but he has worked almost exclusively as a backup during his eight-year, 64-game career. Davis has totaled just three starts, all of which came last season.
After re-signing on a one-year deal in February, Davis is on track to play his seventh season in Cincinnati. As someone who has primarily lined up on special teams, Davis will have to prove he is cut out for a regular defensive role. If he isn’t up to the task, Hill may have to go back to the slot.
Minor NFL Transactions: 2/20/26
Today’s minor NFL moves as we head into the weekend:
Cincinnati Bengals
- Re-signed: CB Jalen Davis, RB Kendall Milton
Jacksonville Jaguars
- Re-signed: CB Keith Taylor
Two veteran depth cornerbacks were re-signed to one-year deals today. Davis will be entering his seventh season in Cincinnati. Going undrafted out of Utah State in 2018, Davis spent his rookie year with the Dolphins before signing onto the Cardinals’ taxi squad the next year. After a midseason release in 2020, Davis found his way to the Bengals, and he’s been with the team ever since. After several years of special teams duties, Davis saw significant playing in Cincinnati for the first time in his career. He started three of seven game appearances in 2025.
Taylor was a late-season addition in Duval last year. The Jaguars signed the fifth-year player off the Falcons’ practice squad after Jourdan Lewis landed on injured reserve, but ultimately, Taylor didn’t see any time on the field with Jacksonville. Originally a fifth-round pick for the Panthers out of Washington, Taylor spent two years in Carolina and two more in Kansas City before landing in Atlanta. He has five starts in 47 games played over the first five years of his career.

The Lions continue to work through their tight end depth with Sam LaPorta done for the season. The team’s first move today was claiming Hayden Rucci, who was waived by the Dolphins on Saturday. A former UDFA out of Wisconsin, Rucci spent much of the 2024 and 2025 campaigns in Miami. He got into four games with the organization this season, with the majority of his snaps coming on special teams.
The Lions also welcomed Shane Zylstra back to practice today. The tight end has been out since Week 2, when he suffered an ankle injury while blocking on a punt return. The veteran has gotten into 31 games with the Lions since the 2021 season, hauling in 15 catches for 116 yards and four touchdowns.
Otherwise, the Lions placed center Frank Ragnow back on the reserve/retired list after the veteran failed his physical.

Newman and Brown were removed from the Bears’ 53-man roster as corresponding moves to make room for their two activations off injured reserve today.
Martin is being called up as a standard gameday practice squad elevation for the third time this year. If the Ravens would like him to play in any more games after this week, they’ll need to sign him to the 53-man roster.
Lampkin was designated to return from IR back on November 6, and his 21-day practice squad window has come and gone without an activation by the Eagles. The undrafted rookie out of North Carolina will spend the rest of his rookie season on IR, as a result of not being activated.

There hasn’t been much of an update since it was reported that rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel was going through the league’s concussion protocol. He was able to get some limited practice time in yesterday, but he hasn’t yet been cleared. With Gabriel’s status up in the air, Zappe is getting called up in case he’s needed to back up the new starting rookie, Shedeur Sanders.
O’Connell and Sheriff are getting called up with linebackers Tyrice Knight out with a concussion and Ernest Jones questionable with a knee injury. This will be O’Connell’s third and final practice squad elevation, so if the Seahawks wants to see him play again this year, they will need to sign him to the active roster.

Anthony (hamstring) and Johnson (calf) are a pair of 2024 Day 3 picks who will be sidelined for at least four games after picking up injuries in training camp. Anthony is not expected to miss much time, per Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Complications from a college knee surgery are expected to sidelined All for the entire season, but keeping him on the PUP list keeps the Bengals’ options open. Even getting All back on the practice field late in the season could go a long way towards a 2026 comeback.
Adomitis was the Bengals’ long snapper for the last three years, but undrafted rookie Will Wagner beat him out for the starting job in training camp, according to Kelsey Conway of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
If Ridder ever had a legitimate chance at beating out Jake Browning for Cincinnati’s backup quarterback job, he was unable to capitalize on it. With 18 starts under his belt in the last three years – albeit with uninspiring production – Ridder could draw interest on waivers for a team looking to upgrade their quarterback depth.
Volson is expected to be out for the year after undergoing shoulder surgery. He will revert to the Bengals’ season-ending injured reserve if he is not claimed on waivers. The Bengals may pursue an injury settlement to save cap space with almost $2.5MM of non-guaranteed money on Volson’s contract, per OverTheCap.
NFL Reserve/Futures Deals: 2/5/25

The veteran undrafted cornerback has spent the last five years in Cincinnati after originally signing with the Dolphins and spending a year with the Cardinals, as well. He’s served mostly as a depth corner and special teamer in the past, and spent last year on the practice squad, getting elevated twice for game action.

Mariota returned to practice on Wednesday, which was the earliest point at which he could be designated for return. As a result, it comes as little surprise he has been brought back onto Washington’s active roster. The 30-year-old is in his first season with the Commanders, and today’s move paves the way for him to handle backup duties moving forward.
Ngakoue remained on the free agent market into the start of the regular season. He was not connected to a Ravens reunion, but one took place last week. The journeyman sack artist had a brief spell with Baltimore in 2020, and he posted three sacks in 11 games. Ngakoue, 29, had one-and done campaigns in Vegas, Indianapolis and Chicago before taking a Ravens practice squad deal. He will make his debut tomorrow and aim to provide depth along the edge.
