More teams made tender/non-tender decisions on restricted and exclusive rights free agents today. Here are the latest updates:
RFAs
Tendered:
- Panthers: C Cade Mays
Non-tendered:
- Browns: OLB James Houston
Carolina has tendered Mays with an original-round tender worth $3.26MM. A former sixth-round draft pick, the third-year center will be able field offers from the rest of the league. If an offer comes in, the Panthers would have the chance to match it or let the team sign Mays in exchange for a sixth-round pick. Mays started eight games in 11 appearances last year.
Houston flashed early, particularly when he tallied eight sacks in seven games (only two starts) for the Lions as a rookie. Since then, injuries and inconsistency have kept him from sticking in Detroit or Cleveland.

Commanders Place K Austin Seibert On IR
Austin Seibert returned from a two-game absence in Week 12, but the veteran kicker played a key role in the Commanders’ upset loss to the Cowboys. Two days later, he is heading to IR.
Washington placed Seibert on IR on Tuesday, shutting him down for at least four games. With the Commanders’ bye coming in Week 14, Seibert cannot return until the regular-season finale. A right hip injury had sidelined Seibert in Weeks 11 and 12, but he returned to face Dallas — a game that featured an exciting conclusion but one that involved a Seibert gaffe. It is not the hip matter that will send him to IR, via the Washington Post’s Nicki Jhabvala; instead, a groin malady will do so.
A bad snap preceded Seibert missing what would have been a game-tying extra point, coming just after a miraculous Jayden Daniels-to-Terry McLaurin score revived the Commanders’ effort. The Commanders have another kicker option rostered, with Zane Gonzalez still on their practice squad. Washington moved running back Chris Rodriguez to its active roster, quickly filling Seibert’s spot.
The Commanders added Gonzalez, who had not kicked in a game since 2021, earlier this month. Gonzalez became the third kicker for the team this season, but the 7-5 squad has gone through several since the league year began. Moving on from Joey Slye in March, the Commanders signed Brandon McManus. Allegations of sexual assault led to McManus being dropped in June, and Ramiz Ahmed being signed. Ahmed entered training camp as Washington’s only kicker, but the team claimed Riley Patterson off waivers. Patterson struggling in the preseason led to him being cut and a Cade York acquisition via trade (from the Browns) transpiring. Finally, the Seibert addition came after York fared poorly in the opener.
A sixth-year vet, Seibert is 27-for-30 on field goals. He missed one from beyond 50 yards Sunday, before the PAT miss. For the season, Seibert is 22-for-24 on PATs. Gonzalez made 3 of 3 field goals and all four extra points he tried in relief of Seibert. If the Commanders are to make the playoffs, they will have a decision to make at kicker due to Seibert’s mandated absence.

Spector will miss at least the next four games as a result of the Bills’ move. He has remained a mainstay on special teams this year, having also done so in 2022 and ’23. The former seventh-rounder has made three starts on defense, however, so his absence will be felt moving forward. Linebacker has been a position hit hard by injuries this season, and Buffalo’s depth at the second level will now be tested even further.
Wattenberg had his 21-day practice window opened by the Broncos earlier this week, paving the way for today’s activation. The 27-year-old operated as the team’s starting center prior to going down after having won a summer competition for the gig with Alex Forsyth. Forsyth handled first-team duties over the past four games, drawing a superior PFF evaluation and therefore potentially playing his way into an extended look atop the depth chart. At a minimum, having Wattenberg back will give Denver – a team with three IR activations left – depth up front.

Commanders Place RB Chris Rodriguez Jr. On IR
Following a breakout performance on Christmas Eve, Commanders running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. is done for the season. The Commanders announced that they’ve placed the rookie on injured reserve. To fill the open roster spot, the team has activated linebacker De’Jon Harris from injured reserve.
With Brian Robinson Jr. out with an injury, Rodriguez got plenty of looks on Sunday. The sixth-round pick finished the game with 11 touches for 65 yards and two touchdowns. However, he was spotted wearing a boot after the game, and it was later revealed that he suffered an ankle injury in that loss to the Jets. After not practicing to begin this week, the Commanders decided to shut down the rookie for the rest of the campaign.
The Kentucky product finished his rookie season having collected 259 yards from scrimmage on 53 touches. Rodriguez also saw a significant role on special teams, getting into more than half his squad’s snaps. Robinson is trending in the right direction in his return from a hamstring injury, and he’d join Antonio Gibson atop the depth chart for the final two games.
Harris has spent the past few seasons in Washington, bouncing between the active roster and the practice squad. He got into six games this season before landing on injured reserve in November with a quad injury.
RB Notes: Hines, Rodriguez, Cook
Here are a few RB-related items from around the league:
- The Bills have invested heavily at the running back position in recent years, and at present, the club has 2022 second-round pick James Cook and 2023 free agent signee Damien Harris at the top of its depth chart, with newcomer Latavius Murray also in the mix. As quarterback Josh Allen is a significant part of Buffalo’s ground attack, and since the Bills also offer a bevy of quality receiving options, Ryan O’Halloran of the Buffalo News wonders how 2022 trade acquisition Nyheim Hines fits into the equation. As a member of the Colts, Hines proved that he can be a dynamic weapon, but he saw just 66 offensive snaps in nine games with the Bills last year. While O’Halloran expects Hines to continue making an impact as a return specialist, he finds it difficult to envision anything more than a gadget role for the NC State product on offense. On the other hand, RB coach Kelly Skipper suggested that Hines’ limited usage in 2022 was largely due to the complexity of the Bills’ playbook, and that Hines will see meaningful action both as a receiver and rusher this season.
- In a feature on Commanders rookie running back Chris Rodriguez Jr., which will be of particular interest to fans of the team and which details the devastating loss of Rodriguez’s mother in January, Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post notes that the Commanders had a third-round grade on the Kentucky product. Washington was able to land Rodriguez in the sixth round, and he is currently penciled in as the third RB on the depth chart, behind Brian Robinson and Antonio Gibson. As a sixth-rounder, though, he is not guaranteed a spot on the roster, especially if the team’s interest in Kareem Hunt should evolve into something more. As new OC Eric Bieniemy noted, Rodriguez will need to impress on special teams, but if he can do so, he could be well-positioned for a productive tenure in the nation’s capital. Gibson is a free agent at season’s end, and while neither Robinson nor Rodriguez offer Gibson’s upside as a receiver, both players have the type of downhill, between-the-tackles power that the team values, and the duo could form a potent 1-2 punch down the line.
- Free agent RB Dalvin Cook recently suggested that he declined a visit with an unnamed club, and according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, that club was not the Dolphins (Twitter link). As of the time of this writing, the ‘Fins are the only named team that has definite interest in Cook’s services, though the latest reporting suggested that about six teams are in the market and that Cook has received multiple offers. Jackson says that Cook — who has previously expressed enthusiasm for joining his hometown Dolphins — remains interested in playing his home games in South Beach.
