Titans RB Tyjae Spears Lands On IR As Team Gets To 53
Year 2 under Brian Callahan and Year 1 under Mike Borgonzi can now get underway as the Titans made the following transactions to get their initial roster down to 53 players:
Released:
- C Brenden Jaimes
- LB Blake Lynch
- CB Amani Oruwariye
- WR James Proche
- QB Trevor Siemian
- DE Carlos Watkins
Waived:
- LB Brian Asamoah
- S Kendell Brooks
- TE Drake Dabney
- T Jaelyn Duncan
- OLB Ali Gaye
- DT Cam Horsley
- RB Jermar Jefferson
- WR Mason Kinsey
- RB Jordan Mims
- TE Thomas Odukoya
- DT Isaiah Raikes
- WR Xavier Restrepo
- OL Andrew Rupcich
- TE Josh Whyle
Placed on IR (designated for return):
- RB Tyjae Spears
As expected, the team’s RB2 will open the year on injured reserve. Spears suffered a high ankle sprain two weeks ago, and the injury will now keep him from playing in the first four weeks of the season.
The absence hurts a run offense that would’ve featured Tony Pollard with a good dose of Spears, as well. Rookie quarterbacks often benefit from strong rushing attacks, so Pollard will have a bit more pressure on his shoulders to help the offense succeed. There was some thought that the team may hold on to an extra running back if Spears went on IR, but both Jefferson and Mims head to waivers with hopes of coming back to the practice squad.
With Siemian getting cut, Brandon Allen, once again, is the last man standing as the primary backup to Cam Ward. With only two passers making it on the active roster, Siemien stands a strong chance at landing on the p-squad, per beat writer Paul Kuharsky.
Siemien joins six other vested veterans in becoming free agents. Jaimes, Oruwariye, Proche, and Watkins all signed veteran minimum deals in an effort to make the team but will now head back to free agency. Proche, in particular, was a close cut to make the team. Per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Tennessee could try to bring him back on the practice squad, but he’s just as likely to get a contract offer to play elsewhere.
Lastly, Ward’s favorite target last year in Coral Gables, Restrepo, didn’t join him on the initial 53-man roster. Like those mentioned above, Restrepo is another candidate to be retained on the practice squad, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

A handful of players injured in the first week of the preseason were placed on IR today, effectively ending their seasons early. These players won’t be allowed to play for their current squads in 2025, although they could place elsewhere if they’re released from injured reserve (often via an injury settlement).
Among those who landed on IR includes Texans DT Marlon Davidson, who remained in his team’s preseason opener after suffering a biceps injury. Vikings lineman Matt Nelson also suffered a biceps injury that will land him on IR. The veteran just joined Minnesota last week.
In addition to bringing back old friend Jeff Wilson, the 49ers made a handful of additional moves today. This includes shifting veteran RB Ameer Abdullah to injured reserve. Abdullah suffered a rib injury that will prevent him from taking the field with San Francisco this season. The veteran is coming off one of the most productive seasons of his career in 2024, when he compiled 572 yards from scrimmage in 16 games (three starts) with the Raiders. The 49ers also added defensive lineman Trevis Gipson, who started 19 games for the Bears between 2021 and 2022.
Chiefs Waive BJ Thompson
The Chiefs moved on from BJ Thompson today, but the separation may be temporary. According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 in Houston, the Chiefs waived the defensive end with a non-football illness designation.
The specific designation of the transaction means Thompson will most likely land back in Kansas City. Assuming the player passes through waivers unclaimed, he’ll be placed on the non-football illness list, allowing him to continue his rehab without taking up a roster spot.
Andy Reid acknowledged as much while speaking with reporters yesterday. The coach noted that Thompson has made progress in his recovery from his 2024 cardiac arrest, and the transaction isn’t an indication that the player is facing the end of his playing career.
“[H]e is making progress, but just not quite, not quite there yet, but he’s made great, great strides,” Reid told reporters (h/t Charles Goldman of AtoZ Sports). “And so in this day and age of the way football is, we had to do something there. And this is the route that we went. But it doesn’t mean his career is over by any means, just where we’re at today.”
A 2023 fifth-round pick, the Stephen F. Austin product played sparingly as a rookie. During a team meeting last summer, Thompson suffered a seizure that resulted in cardiac arrest for more than 90 seconds. He regained consciousness a few days later. Fortunately, it sounds like Thompson is doing much better, but the Chiefs are still playing it very safe when it comes to his playing future.
The Chiefs made another move today, waiving linebacker Blake Lynch (via Wilson). The veteran joined the Chiefs late last season and got into one game for his new squad. He re-signed with the Chiefs back in March. Lynch has appeared in 29 career games, with the majority coming from a 16-game showing with the Vikings in 2021.

The former second-round pick caught on with the Chargers practice squad in December and ended up getting into one game with the squad.

Ross’ new deal to the Texans’ 53-man roster is good through the 2025 season, as well. Ditto for Jones, signed to the active roster in New England today.
Sanders returned to practice this week, and his activation will allow him to close out his second Panthers season on the field rather than on the mend. His Carolina tenure has fallen well short of expectations and a release in the near future could be in the cards. Given the team’s backfield injuries, though, Sanders could handle a notable workload tomorrow while potentially auditioning for free agent suitors.
Gilman’s return will be welcomed by the Chargers’ defense. The 27-year-old has remained a full-time starter this season, his second straight handling first-team duties. Los Angeles is assured of a wild-card spot, but moving up to the No. 5 seed in the AFC playoff picture could be possible on Sunday. In any case, Gilman’s presence will be key for a Bolts defense which leads the league in points allowed per game (17.6).
Gardner’s campaign will come to an end after 15 games played. He fell short of a Pro Bowl nod for this first time in his young career, but the fourth pick of the 2022 draft remained a critical member of the team’s secondary when healthy. Gardner is eligible for an extension this offseason, and his financial future (which will include a fifth-year option decision in the spring) will be a key point of focus once New York’s head coach/general manager tandem is in place.
