49ers Sign S Ashtyn Davis
The 49ers have added some veteran depth to their secondary. The team announced that they’ve signed safety Ashtyn Davis to a one-year deal. To make room on the roster, the team has waived running back Jermar Jefferson.
The 2020 third-round pick out of California spent the first five seasons of his career with the Jets, where he alternated between full-time starter and part-time backup. Davis started 16 games between his first two professional campaigns, including a 2021 season where he tallied 62 tackles, three passes defended, three forced fumbles, and a pair of interceptions.
Between 2022 and 2024, Davis was limited to only six starts, and he spent that 2022 campaign completely out of the defensive rotation (13 defensive snaps in 14 games). He still managed to contribute on special teams, and his 957 ST snaps over that span outpaced his 491 defensive reps.
Davis joined the Dolphins via a one-year, $3MM deal last offseason, and he had one of the most productive seasons of his career. He started 12 of his 15 appearances, finishing with a career-high 65 tackles to go along with four passes defended and an interception. Despite the uptick in snaps, Pro Football Focus wasn’t fond of his performance, ranking him 82nd among 91 qualifying safeties.
The 49ers return much of their safety depth from last season, including Ji’Ayir Brown, Malik Mustapha, and Marques Sigle. Jason Pinnock left via free agency, so Davis could soak up some of those leftover snaps. He’ll be competing with the likes of Derrick Canteen, Patrick McMorris, and Jalen Stroman.
Jefferson caught on with the 49ers just last week. The 26-year-old has seen time in 11 career games, collecting 129 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns on 26 touches.
49ers’ Isaac Guerendo Suffers Pectoral Tear; Team Makes RB Additions
6:25pm: Guerendo has already undergone surgery, which should help him meet that aforementioned end-of-training-camp target, per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
4:30pm: Isaac Guerendo is set to compete for a roster spot this offseason, with the 49ers adding a Day 2 draftee (Kaelon Black) to their backfield — one already housing Jordan James behind Christian McCaffrey. Guerendo will not be able to factor prominently into the McCaffrey backup competition for a while, however.
The third-year running back suffered a pectoral tear while lifting weights recently, Kyle Shanahan said (via the San Jose Mercury News’ Cam Inman). Guerendo is expected to return late in training camp, complicating his path to the team’s 53-man roster now that Black has arrived as a third-round pick. Guerendo suffered the injury about a month ago, per Shanahan.
For the short term, the 49ers also made additions to their RB room. The team signed running backs Jordan Mims and Jermar Jefferson, according to NFL.com’s Mike Garafolo. The team waived running back Sincere McCormick and placed veteran safety Darrick Forrest on IR to create roster space.
A recent report indicated Guerendo may be on the outside looking in following the 49ers’ Black pick. Although the Shanahan-era 49ers have struggled mightily with mid-round RB picks — with Joe Williams, Trey Sermon and Tyrion Davis-Price joining Guerendo (a 2024 third-rounder) in failing to make much of an impact — the team is trying again with Black. The Indiana product was not invited to the Combine, but he became this draft’s third RB chosen.
Guerendo was on San Francisco’s 53-man roster throughout last season, but the team stashed him behind James and Brian Robinson among McCaffrey backups. Despite the 49ers trading Jordan Mason to the Vikings, they did not find much playing time for Guerendo. San Francisco traded for Robinson to be McCaffrey’s top backup, and Guerendo did not play an offensive snap, seeing his only time on special teams.
Clocking a sub-4.4-second 40-yard dash at the 2024 Combine, Guerendo averaged 5.0 yards per carry as a rookie (84/420) and scored four touchdowns during a season in which McCaffrey missed extensive time with injury. Robinson joined the Falcons in free agency, but Black will be competing with James to replace him as RB2. Guerendo is now all but certain to land on San Francisco’s active/PUP list to open camp. The 49ers could buy more recovery time by placing him on the reserve/PUP list to open the season; the latter designation would require a four-game absence.
Mims, 26, has 20 career carries in three seasons. The former UDFA logged all of those totes in 2024 with the Saints. A 2021 Lions seventh-round pick who spent last season with the Cardinals, Jefferson has 21 career carries. Forrest, who started 17 Commanders games from 2021-24, joined the 49ers’ practice squad in November of last year but did not see any playing time.

Jefferson, Sheppard, and Trammell all found themselves signing to the practice squads of the teams that waived them two days ago. Having cleared waivers, the free agents returned to their lockers as members of the taxi squad.
Indianapolis cut Morrissey today in order to make room for kicker Blake Grupe, whom they signed yesterday. Grupe should be in line to take over kicking duties following the waiving of Michael Badgley yesterday, while Spencer Shrader remains on injured reserve.

The Lions continue to work through their tight end depth with Sam LaPorta done for the season. The team’s first move today was claiming Hayden Rucci, who was waived by the Dolphins on Saturday. A former UDFA out of Wisconsin, Rucci spent much of the 2024 and 2025 campaigns in Miami. He got into four games with the organization this season, with the majority of his snaps coming on special teams.
The Lions also welcomed Shane Zylstra back to practice today. The tight end has been out since Week 2, when he suffered an ankle injury while blocking on a punt return. The veteran has gotten into 31 games with the Lions since the 2021 season, hauling in 15 catches for 116 yards and four touchdowns.
Otherwise, the Lions placed center Frank Ragnow back on the reserve/retired list after the veteran failed his physical.

Anderson cleared waivers after being cut and can now be assigned to the 49ers’ practice squad. The reason San Francisco can add two while only dropping one from a full practice squad is because Zierer is from Munich, Germany, qualifying him to be a part of the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program. While practice squads are capped at 16 players, teams can keep a 17th player if they are a part of the IPPP.

As expected, the team’s RB2 will open the year on injured reserve. Spears suffered a high ankle sprain two weeks ago, and the injury will now keep him from playing in the first four weeks of the season.
The absence hurts a run offense that would’ve featured Tony Pollard with a good dose of Spears, as well. Rookie quarterbacks often benefit from strong rushing attacks, so Pollard will have a bit more pressure on his shoulders to help the offense succeed. There was some thought that the team may hold on to an extra running back if Spears went on IR, but both Jefferson and Mims head to waivers with hopes of coming back to the practice squad.
With Siemian getting cut, Brandon Allen, once again, is the last man standing as the primary backup to Cam Ward. With only two passers making it on the active roster, Siemien stands a strong chance at landing on the p-squad, per beat writer Paul Kuharsky.
Siemien joins six other vested veterans in becoming free agents. Jaimes, Oruwariye, Proche, and Watkins all signed veteran minimum deals in an effort to make the team but will now head back to free agency. Proche, in particular, was a close cut to make the team. Per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Tennessee could try to bring him back on the practice squad, but he’s just as likely to get a contract offer to play elsewhere.
Lastly, Ward’s favorite target last year in Coral Gables, Restrepo, didn’t join him on the initial 53-man roster. Like those mentioned above, Restrepo is another candidate to be retained on the practice squad, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Houston fans may be discouraged to see a few big names on injured lists, but all is not lost. Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 tells us that Mixon’s “medical outlook is positive” as the team plans to gradually increase his activity throughout camp. Likewise, Autry is expected to ease his way back into camp workouts, as well. Pierce, on the other hand, is expected to be ready to come off the list at the start of camp.
Per ESPN’s John Keim, Cosmi likely won’t see much time on the field in camp, but he appears to be hitting all the mile markers en route to being healthy for the start of the regular season. With McLaurin officially beginning his holdout yesterday, the team has made the corresponding roster move. McLaurin will rack up fines of $50K per each day missed, but if the team can come to terms on an extension, they can make sure those fines are nullified.

The Jets will be finishing the season without their starting safety in Clark. Clark, who battled back from injury earlier this season, was placed on injured reserve for an undisclosed reason today.
