Cowboys Could See Battle For RB2
After re-signing former second-round running back Javonte Williams following a breakout 2025 campaign, the Cowboys’ 2026 offensive backfield is set to look extremely similar to last year’s group. While the only difference will be the departure of veteran Miles Sanders, Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram believes there could be a battle for the RB2 role in Dallas over the offseason.
Based purely on the team’s production last year, Malik Davis should be first in line for opportunities off the bench behind Williams. After Williams’ line of 252 carries for 1,201 yards and 11 touchdowns, Davis was the next-highest producer with career-best totals in carries (52), rushing yards (250), and rushing touchdowns (two) over 10 games. Jaydon Blue, the fifth-round rookie out of Texas, had the next-best numbers with 38 carries for 129 yards and a touchdown in half the games Davis saw.
Behind them, Sanders toted the rock 20 times for 117 yards and a touchdown, and seventh-round rookie Phil Mafah saw his few touches (five carries, 18 yards, one touchdown) in the team’s regular season finale.
Harris believes there’s a desire for Blue to pick up the mantle of RB2 based on the change of pace and pass-catching element he can provide, something that is lacking in the games of Davis and Mafah. While Mafah had the most collegiate success of the three, combining for 2,080 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns in his final two years at Clemson, Blue had actual experience as a No. 2 in Austin.
In his final season with the Longhorns, despite putting up career highs in carries (134), rushing yards (730), and rushing touchdowns (8), Blue was outpaced by RB1 Tre Wisner in carries (226) and rushing yards (1,064). Not only did Blue score more on the ground than Wisner, but he also showed more electric abilities as a receiver out of the backfield, adding 42 catches for 368 yards and six touchdowns through the air. Experience in exactly that kind of a role could set Blue up well to challenge Davis for the primary backup duties next year.
Harris also believes that the RB2 role will be a much more significant one in 2026 than it was last year. Now that Dallas has Williams secured on a three-year contract, they won’t want the North Carolina-product to work in a bell-cow situation that might shorten the lifetime of his effectiveness. Strategically spelling Williams with an effective RB2 is the dream scenario for the Cowboys offense, and Blue and Mafah could be challenging Davis for that honor over the summer.

The Browns made it known yesterday that they were shutting down Schwesinger and tight ends David Njoku and Harold Fannin Jr. for the final week of the season, but the Defensive Rookie of the Year-favorite is the only one to land on IR.
In Dallas, Williams failed to practice this week as he dealt with shoulder and neck issues. With Davis also being placed on IR, the Cowboys will rely on rookie fifth-rounder Jaydon Blue and the recently activated Mafah, a seventh-round rookie, in Week 18. The team used their eighth and final IR activation to bring Mafah back for a potential NFL debut.
Because Green Bay didn’t elevate recently signed practice squad quarterback Desmond Ridder, it appears either Malik Willis will be healthy enough to back up Clayton Tune or Jordan Love will serve as the potential QB2 for the Packers in Week 18.
Judon is set to make his Bills debut in the team’s regular season finale after signing to their practice squad two weeks ago.
With Saints backup quarterback Spencer Rattler not practicing this week with a finger injury, Haener gets the call to back up rookie Tyler Shough.
Hall in Tennessee had already been called up as a standard gameday practice squad elevation three times this season. In order for him to appear in the Titans’ regular season finale, the move to the 53-man roster was necessary.
Cowboys Open Up Practice Windows For Three Players
The Cowboys are dangerously close to being eliminated from the playoffs, but they haven’t stopped fighting yet. With three weeks left in the season, now’s the time to open 21-day practice windows for players hoping to make a return from injured lists this year.
To that point, Dallas opened the practice window for defensive end Payton Turner, who had been designated to return at the roster cut deadline in August, designated seventh-round rookie running back Phil Mafah to return from injured reserve, and designated cornerback Josh Butler to return from the reserve/physically unable to perform list, per ESPN’s Todd Archer. The three players have been on their respective injured lists since before the season began.
The Cowboys signed Turner to a one-year deal early into free agency to build depth behind a group that, at the time, consisted of Micah Parsons, Sam Williams, and Marshawn Kneeland. To date, only Williams remains after the Parsons trade and Kneeland’s tragic passing. Turner’s depth ended up being a non-factor, considering he spent the first 15 weeks of the season on IR, but if he returns, he’ll now add depth behind Donovan Ezeiruaku, Dante Fowler, Jadeveon Clowney, and Williams.
Butler went undrafted out of Michigan State all the way back in 2020, and after a short stint in the short-lived The Spring League and a strong season in the USFL, Butler earned himself a chance in Dallas in 2023. The next year, he made his NFL debut and, two games later, made his first of three consecutive starts. His quick rise came to an unfortunate end, though, when he tore his ACL, ending his debut NFL season.
Mafah, a two-year starter at Clemson, was one of two rookies the team drafted this year. He suffered a shoulder injury in the Cowboys’ final preseason game, and it was announced that he would eventually be put on IR. With the team opting to assign its two allotted pre-deadline return designations to Turner and wide receiver Jonathan Mingo, they opted to keep Mafah on the initial 53-man roster, so they could immediately place him on IR the next week and give him a chance to return later into the year, as well.
There is no longer the usual pressure to get activated within the 21-day window as we only have three weeks remaining in the regular season. The 21-day window will take them past the Week 18 slate of games, so being reverted to season-ending IR would not the worst fate. Still, these three will be working hard to get onto the field in 2025 and help their team push for a still technically possible playoff berth, and at worst, they’ll give the Cowboys three more bodies at practice for the remainder of the season.

Cowboys To Place RB Phil Mafah On IR
The Cowboys are planning to place rookie running back Phil Mafah on injured reserve with a return designation, per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Mafah, a seventh-round pick, suffered a shoulder injury in the Cowboys’ final preseason game against the Falcons on Friday. He will be sidelined for at least the first four weeks of the regular season.
Dallas has carried three running backs (plus fullback Hunter Luepke) on their initial 53-man roster in each of the last two years. Two of those spots will be filled by Javonte Williams, Miles Sanders and Jaydon Blue. That left Mafah competing with 2023 sixth-rounder Deuce Vaughn and former UDFA Malik Davis to convince the team to roster a fourth running back.
Davis led the backfield statistically in the preseason with 70 rushing yards (50 of which came after contact), 7.8 yards per carry, and four runs of 10 yards or more, per Pro Football Focus (subscription required). However, the Cowboys’ distribution of playing time suggests that Vaughn and Mafah were still ahead (in that order). With Mafah sidelined, Vaughn would be in line for a fourth RB roster spot – if it exists.
However, Mafah’s return designation means that he could be back as early as Week 5. The Cowboys’ top three running backs should be able to get the team through the first four games, at which point Mafah could be added back to the active roster as the RB4. That would allow Dallas to open up another roster spot during final cuts this week and figure out a way to make room for Mafah during the regular season.
