  • The Patriots cut cornerback Jimmy Jean, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle tweets. The rookie was signed by the Pats as a rookie free agent out of Alabama-Birmingham on May 8, 2015. The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder, played both safety and cornerback over two seasons at University of Alabama- Birmingham.
  • The Buccaneers have signed punter Jacob Schum, waiving safety Derrick Wells in the corresponding roster move, the team announced today (via Twitter). Schum just became a free agent last week after being cut by the Jets.

Minor NFL Transactions: 7/22/15

With training camps around the corner, NFL teams are beginning to address their 90-man rosters again, making minor signings, cuts, and other transactions as the season inches closer. Here are Wednesday’s minor moves:

  • As their rookies reported to training camp today, the Browns added a player to their 90-man roster, announcing in a press release that they’ve signed offensive lineman Joe Madsen. Madsen, who played his college ball at West Virginia, has spent time with the Steelers, Packers, and the AFL’s Los Angeles KISS since going undrafted in 2013.
  • The Seahawks have waived running back Demitrius Bronson off their injured reserve list, removing him from their roster entirely, according to the league’s transactions log. Bronson, who spent most of the 2014 campaign on Seattle’s practice squad, signed a futures contract when the season ended, but was removed from the 90-man roster in May due to a hamstring injury.

  • The Broncos have waived offensive tackles Paul Cornick and Jeremy Kelley, according to the Denver Post (Twitter link). Troy Renck of the Denver Post (Twitter link) expects the Bears to have interest in Cornick, who started six games in Dener last season. Of course, new Bears head coach John Fox and OC Adam Gase were previously with the Broncos.
  • The Falcons have signed former Titans fullback Collin Mooney, the team announced today (Twitter link). It’s a multiyear pact for Mooney, per Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com (Twitter link).

  • Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean (Twitter link) adds Maryland linebacker Yannik Cudjoe-Virgil to the list of UDFAs signed by the Titans.

Extra Points: Packers, Fitzgerald, Raiders

As the Ravens look to put the finishing touches on a Wild Card win over the rival Steelers, let’s round up a few Saturday notes from around the NFL….

  • In Saturday’s lone practice squad move, the Packers signed former West Virginia center Joe Madsen to their unit, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Green Bay had an opening on its taxi squad, so the club is back up to 10 players now.
  • Now that the Cardinals‘ season is over, we can expect speculation about Larry Fitzgerald‘s future in Arizona to ramp up, writes Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. The club isn’t expected to cut its longtime star wideout, but a trade is an outside possibility, and a restructure or reduced salary seems even more likely.
  • Joel Corry of the National Football Post provides an in-depth explanation of how players get paid during the postseason, including a couple oddities — for instance, Percy Harvin may be rooting for the Seahawks in the playoffs, since his time spent with the club this year means he could earn $70K+ if Seattle wins the Super Bowl.
  • The Raiders are the latest team to be covered by Jason Fitzgerald of Over The Cap in his 2015 salary cap outlook series. Armed with up to nearly $60MM in cap space, Oakland should have a ton of flexibility this winter.
  • In a separate piece for Over The Cap, Fitzgerald attempts to determine the value of the top wide receivers eligible for free agency this offseason.
  • Newsday’s Kimberley A. Martin runs through five burning questions that the Jets must answer this offseason, starting with whether or not Woody Johnson can make the right call on a new head coach and general manager.
