Cardinals Place Kirk, Iupati On IR

The Cardinals upset the Packers on Sunday – and cost Mike McCarthy his job in the process – but the win proved to be costly. On Monday afternoon, head coach Steve Wilks announced that wide receiver Christian Kirk (knee) and guard Mike Iupati (knee) have been placed on season-ending injured reserve.

Kirk, 22, was selected in the second round of this year’s draft out of Texas A&M. While this has been a largely forgettable season for the Cardinals, Kirk has flashed at various points during his rookie season, including four games with upwards of 70 yards receiving. His campaign will end with 43 catches for 590 yards and three touchdowns plus a 7.8 yards-per-return average on punts.

Iupati, a four-time Pro Bowler, has struggled to stay healthy in over the last two seasons. Last year, he was shelved after just one game thanks to bone spurs in his elbow. The injury could mark the end of his run in Arizona – last year, he agreed to a restructuring of his deal that will allow the Cardinals to dump him before the 2019 season with just $1.7MM in dead money.

The Cardinals’ depth on the interior line could allow them to get by without adding a guard, but they’ll almost certainly add a wide receiver to replace Kirk, who served as the No. 2 option behind Larry Fitzgerald. Chad Williams‘ status for Week 14 is in doubt due to an ankle injury, leaving Fitzgerald, J.J. Nelson, and Trent Sherfield as the club’s only healthy receivers.

Cardinals To Reassess Entire Operations, Coaching Staffs; Todd Bowles Could Return As HC?

We learned at the end of November that Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks is very much on the hot seat less than one year after being one of the hottest head coaching candidates on the market. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network confirms as much today, reporting that Arizona will reassess its entire football operations and coaching staff at the end of the 2018 campaign (video link). Rapoport says all options are on the table, including dismissing both Wilks and GM Steve Keim, keeping both, or keeping one and not the other. Wilks’ fate will depend in large part on whether the 2-9 Cards continue to play hard for him down the stretch.

  • If Wilks does get the boot, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that current Jets head coach Todd Bowles could return to the Cardinals as their HC. Bowles served as Arizona’s defensive coordinator from 2013-14 before accepting the head coaching job with Gang Green, and he remains a beloved figure in the desert. He enjoyed his time with the Cardinals, has strong ties with many prominent figures in the organization, and has a good relationship with some of the existing assistant coaches, so the Cardinals could turn to Bowles if they want to replace Wilks but avoid a complete overhaul. Bowles is expected to be fired by the Jets at the end of the 2018 season.

Cardinals Place Jeremy Vujnovich On IR

The Cardinals placed offensive lineman Jeremy Vujnovich on injured reserve, per a team announcement. To take his place, the club re-signed fellow offensive lineman Will Holden

With Vujnovich going to IR, the Cardinals are now without two of the five players who started on the offensive line in Sunday’s lopsided loss to the Chargers. Andre Smith was released on Monday and has since rejoined the Bengals.

Vujnovich, 28, appeared in five games for the Cardinals this year and started twice. In 2017, he started all 16 games for the Colts at left guard, but he has struggled in Arizona this year. In Week 10, for example, Vujnovich allowed three sacks against the Chiefs. He’ll likely be replaced at right guard by Oday Aboushi.

Holden was most recently with the Saints’ practice squad. Last year, Holden appeared in seven games (five starts) for the Cardinals and saw snaps at left guard, left tackle, and even tight end.
