King’s Latest: Gordon, Cards, Gregory, WRs

Peter King of The MMQB.com leads off his Monday Morning Quarterback column this week by discussing Troy Polamalu‘s legacy, Hall-of-Fame-worthy safeties, and new referee Sarah Thomas, before he dives headfirst into the latest news and rumors on the draft. That section of King’s piece includes plenty of noteworthy tidbits, so let’s round up some of the highlights….

  • Melvin Gordon won’t get past the Ravens at No. 26, according to King. It would be a little surprising to see Baltimore nab a running back in the first round, with plenty of other holes on the roster, including a big one at wide receiver.
  • The Cardinals will “very seriously” consider a running back with the 24th overall pick.
  • Although Randy Gregory‘s failed drug test initially scared off some teams near the top of the draft, many of those clubs are feeling more comfortable with the Nebraska pass rusher after taking a closer look at him.
  • USC wideout Nelson Agholor, initially viewed as a late second-round pick, is moving up on draft boards, since teams think he can play inside or outside with equal effectiveness. Chip Kelly and the Eagles are known to like Agholor.
  • Multiple teams have Louisville receiver DeVante Parker as a top-10 player on their boards, says King.
  • According to King, UCF wideout Breshad Perriman is receiving serious consideration from at least two teams picking in the teens. Nearly all the teams with picks in that range – including the Saints, Dolphins, 49ers, and Browns – could use a wideout. In our first mock draft of the year, we had Perriman going to the Chiefs with the 18th overall pick.
  • The Rams and Chargers are both working out Marcus Mariota this week, and while King doesn’t expect St. Louis to trade up to land the Oregon quarterback, he isn’t 100% sure about San Diego. As King writes, the Chargers may simply be doing their due diligence in case Mariota slides down the first round, since it still seems “highly unlikely” that the team would trade Philip Rivers.

Notable Free Agents Still Available: Defense

A little over a week ago, we took a look at some of the most notable offensive free agents still available, rounding up the latest reports and rumors on those players. In the eight days since, a handful of those free agents have found new homes, with the Jets signing Stevan Ridley, the Browns securing Rob Housler, and the Broncos agreeing to terms with James Casey.

This weekend, we’ll shift our attention to the defensive side of the ball. Noteworthy veterans like cornerback Charles Tillman (Panthers) and edge defender Anthony Spencer (Saints) have come off the board in recent days, but there are still plenty of free agents worth checking in on, with 2015 free agency entering its second month.

Here’s a breakdown of some of the most notable names remaining at the defensive positions, featuring the latest updates on those players:

Interior defensive lineman: Barry Cofield, Brett Keisel, Tommy Kelly, C.J. Mosley, Kevin Williams
Cofield and Keisel haven’t been the subject of any reports since being released by Washington and Pittsburgh respectively. It’s hard to imagine Keisel playing for any team except the Steelers if he continues his playing career, but he does have links to coaches in Arizona and Tennessee. Kelly played – and played well – for the Cardinals last season, but there’s been no indication yet that the club will re-sign him, and at age 34, he’s a potential candidate for retirement — the same can be said of Williams, who is also 34. Mosley would seem like a good fit in Detroit, after the Lions lost Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley, but the team may be reluctant to bring him back after last year’s suspension for marijuana possession.

Edge defenders: John Abraham, Red Bryant, Dwight Freeney, Osi Umenyiora
Bryant, who turns 31 next week, is easily the youngest player of this group, so it’s not surprising that none of them have found homes for 2015 yet. Abraham, who missed nearly the entire 2014 season with concussion issues, may not return, but I could see Freeney and Umenyiora being effective situational pass rushers in the right situation. Umenyiora informally visited the Jets, but it doesn’t appear that anything is brewing on that front. As for Freeney, he won’t be back with the Chargers, but the Falcons and Buccaneers have been mentioned as potential fits.

Linebackers: Lance Briggs, Joe Mays, Brandon Spikes, Philip Wheeler, Jacquian Williams
Mays will likely come off this list on Monday, as he’s expected to sign with the Jets. The 49ers are in the market for linebackers and have been linked to several of these guys, including Briggs, Spikes, and Wheeler, and I doubt signing Nick Bellore ends the team’s search for ILB help. The Bills would also like to bring back Spikes. Williams, who is unlikely to re-sign with the Giants, said early in free agency that he had received interest from five teams, including the Rams, but nothing has come to fruition over the last few weeks.

Cornerbacks: Tarell Brown, Carlos Rogers, Ike Taylor
With Tillman no longer in play, cornerback is one of the weakest positions in free agency. Brown and Rogers started 21 games between them last year, but did so for the Raiders, and it doesn’t reflect all that well on them that even Oakland doesn’t have interest in retaining them. Brown, at least, drew some interest from the Patriots last month. As for Taylor, he doesn’t seem to be seeking contract offers, and all signs are pointing to him moving on to the next stage of his career.

Safeties: Stevie Brown, Dawan Landry, LaRon Landry, Danieal Manning, Bernard Pollard, George Wilson
While the cornerback ranks thin out, there are at least a handful of interesting names still on the board at safety. One Landry (Dawan) recently paid a visit to Buffalo to meet with the Bills and former head coach Rex Ryan, while the other (LaRon) may not find a job anytime soon, with a 10-game suspension hanging over his head. After Pollard received his release from the Titans, he explained that he preferred to play for a contender, but he doesn’t appear to be generating a ton of interest. Wilson started 10 games for the Titans last year, but his name has surfaced so little this offseason that he doesn’t even have his own PFR rumors page. Brown and Manning also haven’t been the subject of many reports, though one Giants beat writer predicted last month that New York would re-sign Brown.

Jets Sign Erin Henderson

FRIDAY, 5:24pm: Henderson’s one-year deal with the Jets is worth $745,000 and includes no up-front money, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN.com (via Twitter).

WEDNESDAY, 11:44am: The Jets have officially signed Henderson, the team announced today in a press release.

TUESDAY, 1:43pm: Former Vikings linebacker Erin Henderson will get an opportunity to resume his NFL career with the Jets this year, according to Dom Cosentino of NJ.com, who reports that the two sides have agreed to terms on a one-year contract.

Henderson, 28, is a talented player, having racked up 112 tackles, four sacks, and two interceptions for the Vikings in just 14 games in 2013. However, he has been arrested multiple times for DUI-related incidents, and has been suspended by the league for his off-field behavior. The Maryland product didn’t play in the NFL in 2014 following his latest round of legal issues.

According to Cosentino, after doing their due diligence on Henderson, the Jets are satisfied that he has turned his life around. The team met with the linebacker multiple times, working him out in Arizona last month and hosting him for a free agent visit last week. The one-year contract the Jets offered to Henderson likely won’t cost much, meaning it shouldn’t be hard for the team to cut ties if the six-year veteran runs into more trouble.

Before he reached a deal to join the Jets, Henderson reportedly received interest from the 49ers as well.

West Notes: Barksdale, Dunkley, Vincent

As teams attempt to expand their prospect visit itineraries, here is some early-afternoon news from the western divisions.

  • Offensive tackle Joe Barksdale paid a visit to the Titans this week, but according to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (Twitter links), the veteran free agent left Tennessee without a deal, and the Rams remain in the mix for him.
  • Missouri defensive tackle Lucas Vincent has a workout today with the Chiefs, according to Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star (Twitter link). Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun passes along word of another local workout, tweeting that the Broncos are taking a look at Colorado State-Pueblo defensive lineman Josh Bredl.
  • Also from Paylor (via Twitter): cornerback prospect DeVante Bausby is attending the Chiefs’ local pro day. A longtime starter at Division II power Pittsburg State, Bausby attended high school in Kansas City, Kan.
  • South Florida cornerback Chris Dunkley will trek to the 49ers‘ and Chargers‘ facilities this week, respectively, according to the Tampa Bay Times’ Greg Auman on Twitter. The converted wide receiver who also returned kicks for the Bulls previously visited the Patriots and Bills.
  • In addition to lining up summits with DeVante Parker and Sammie Coates, the 49ers will also meet with Ohio State wide receiver Devin Smith next week, per Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee. ESPN’s Todd McShay rates the ex-Buckeyes deep threat as his 34th-best prospect (subscription required). The 49ers have also had discussions with wideouts they’d have to trade up to draft in Amari Cooper and Kevin White, reports Barrows.

Miller’s Latest: Draft, Eagles, Browns, White

Matt Miller of Bleacher Report has plenty of draft updates for us today, including a new big board, a new first-round mock, and a handful of notable tidbits he has picked up from speaking to sources around the league. Here are a few highlights from Bleacher Report’s draft expert:

  • I noted last week that the Eagles appear to have genuine interest in Nelson Agholor, having been linked to him multiple times, and team sources tell Miller that Philadelphia does indeed “love” the USC wide receiver.
  • While some pundits have linked the Browns to right tackles in the first round, one high-ranking Cleveland scout tells Miller that the position “isn’t a priority” for the club.
  • Louisiana Tech’s Houston Bates and Cincinnati’s Jeff Luc are two college linebackers who are receiving some consideration as potential fullbacks, according to Miller.
  • While West Virginia wide receiver Kevin White does have a handful of visits on his schedule, he’s the type of player who doesn’t have many question marks, which explains why teams may not want to “waste” one of their 30 visits on him, writes Miller. So far, White has only visited the Titans, though he has the Bears, Giants, Rams, and Jets coming up.
  • Miller has heard from two separate teams that Minnesota tight end Maxx Williams didn’t come across well in his interviews with them. One said Williams seems “cocky [and] bored, and came off as too good for us.”

Draft Notes: Bucs, Fowler, Mariota, Bears

As previously reported, Dante Fowler Jr. visited the Buccaneers, and Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that Tampa Bay GM Jason Licht “really likes” the Florida pass rusher. However, Fowler himself seems to recognize that he’s unlikely to land with the Bucs, as Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times details.

“They’re going with a quarterback,” Fowler said. “I feel like there’s no need for them to talk to me and waste my time unless something happens with Jameis [Winston] or Marcus [Mariota] or something like that. They know where they’re going. I understand that.”

While the Bucs cover all their bases, Mariota appears to be doing the same thing — Adam Schefter of ESPN.com said Thursday on ESPN 1000 in Chicago that the Oregon signal-caller recently paid a visit to the Bears. Mariota is considered the favorite to come off the board at No. 2, and may not be available when Chicago’s No. 7 overall pick rolls around, but as our Rob DiRe laid out this morning in PFR’s first 2015 mock draft, there are scenarios in which Mariota is still in play at that point. It sounds like both he and the Bears are doing their due diligence.

Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post and the Baltimore Sun has updates on several more draft prospects for us this morning, so let’s round those up….

  • Cameron Artis-Payne (RB, Auburn): Met with the Patriots and Browns (link).
  • Adrian Coxson (WR, Stony Brook): The Giants were “very impressed’ with him at their local prospect day (Twitter link).
  • Tyler Murphy (QB, Boston College): Visiting the Steelers today (link).
  • Nick Perry (S, Alabama): Had private workouts for the Patriots and Colts (link).
  • Tray Walker (CB, Texas Southern): Visits with the Ravens, Chiefs, Packers, Seahawks, Dolphins, and Falcons, plus private workouts with the Cardinals and Texans (link). Had a previously-reported visit with the Raiders.

Byron Bell Works Out For Chiefs

In search of potential offensive line help, the Chiefs conducted a workout for former Panthers tackle Byron Bell this week, a source tells Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post. The audition didn’t immediately result in a new contract for the free agent lineman.

Bell, 26, spent his first four NFL seasons with the Panthers, starting 56 of the 62 regular season contests he played for the club since 2011. In 2014, the New Mexico product was handed the reins at left tackle for the first time, and the results were not pretty. Bell graded out as the second-worst offensive tackle in football out of 84 qualified players, with a -33.4 overall rating, according to Pro Football Focus (subscription required). Only Jake Matthews of the Falcons (-36.8) finished lower.

With the Panthers not interested in bringing back Bell, the veteran tackle hasn’t drawn much interest during the first few weeks of free agency. If the Chiefs were to bring him aboard, I imagine it would be to push Donald Stephenson for playing time at right tackle, or perhaps for a swing tackle role. Despite an up-and-down performance of his own in 2014, former first overall pick Eric Fisher looks like a fixture at left tackle in Kansas City.

Panthers Sign Charles Tillman

3:56pm: It’s a one-year, $3.05MM contract for Tillman, according to Caplan, who tweets that the Buccaneers and Seahawks also were in the mix for the veteran cornerback. We’ll have to wait for the specific details to learn the breakdown on salary, bonuses, and incentives.

2:54pm: The Panthers have officially signed Tillman to a one-year contract, the team announced today (via Twitter).

2:35pm: After visiting the Panthers as a free agent, veteran cornerback Charles Tillman is expected to sign a contract with the team, according to Adam Caplan of ESPN.com (via Twitter).

Tillman, 34, has seen his last two seasons cut short by triceps injuries, and has played just 10 regular season contests since the start of the 2013 campaign. However, he indicated back in February that didn’t have any plans to retire, and intended to continue his NFL career despite the Bears preparing to move on from him.

During his last full, healthy season in 2012, Tillman was one of the league’s best cornerbacks, earning an All-Pro nod and placing third among 113 qualified corners, according to Pro Football Focus’ grades (subscription required). Three years later, the longtime Bear may not be quite as effective, but he likely won’t be expensive either — it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Carolina sign Tillman to a one-year, make-good deal heavy on per-game roster bonuses and incentives.

Tillman is a logical fit for Carolina, given his history with Ron Rivera, who was the Bears’ defensive coordinator about a decade ago. The Panthers pursued free agent corner Alan Ball earlier in free agency, but came up empty-handed when Chicago landed him instead.
