Titans Work Out LS Jon Condo
The Titans worked out long snapper Jon Condo on Friday, according to Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle (on Twitter). The Raiders did not re-sign the two-time Pro Bowler this offseason and he has so far been unable to land a job despite being active on the workout circuit.
Condo offers 12 years of NFL experience with all but one of those seasons coming in Oakland. He celebrated his 37th birthday in August, but age typically doesn’t work against specialists as much as other NFL players, so he could very well find a home with the Titans or another club.
The Titans already have a long snapper in Beau Brinkley, and it’s not clear whether he is injured or if the club is giving serious thought to making a change. If he is displaced by Condo, his 100+ game streak in Tennessee will come to an unceremonious end.
Colts Promote TE Mo Alie-Cox
The Colts have placed defensive back Matthias Farley on injured reserve. To take his place on the main roster, the club promoted tight end Mo Alie-Cox.
Farley, a Notre Dame product, started in 15 games for the Colts last year. This offseason, he returned to the Colts on Labor Day weekend after he was let go by the Cardinals. Farley wasn’t a regular starter this year, but his versatility will be missed.
Alie-Cox, 25, dressed for one Colts game this year – the club’s Week 4 loss to the Texans. He was let go earlier this month, but he’s back on the roster after a short hiatus. Alie-Cox made a name for himself as a forward for VCU’s basketball team, but decided to transition to an NFL tight end and follow in the footsteps of Tony Gonzalez, Julius Thomas, Jimmy Graham, and Antonio Gates.
The former power forward will try to make an impression this year, and he may get an opportunity this week while Eric Ebron is banged up. The Colts may not have Ebron in the lineup against the Jets, and even if he plays, they may have to limit his snaps.
Chiefs’ De’Anthony Thomas Suffers Injury
The Chiefs’ injury report continues to grow in advance of their Sunday night game against the Patriots. Wide receiver De’Anthony Thomas broke his leg in a “freak accident,” according to trainer Rick Burkholder.
Another player stepped on Thomas’ leg, causing a fracture close to the one he suffered in the last game of the 2017 season. Fortunately, the team does not believe that Thomas will need to have surgery, but his status for this season is murky.
Through five weeks, Thomas has three catches for 29 yards and a receiving touchdown, plus one carry for six yards. Thomas has also been involved in the return game, including a punt return for 48 yards against the Steelers.
The Chiefs have five other receivers on the roster, so they won’t necessarily have to sign anyone to fill in for Thomas. Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, Chris Conley, Demarcus Robinson, and Marcus Kemp make up the rest of KC’s receiving corps.
Jaguars To Sign Ereck Flowers
Ereck Flowers has a new home. The Jaguars have signed the offensive tackle to a one-year deal, according to a team announcement.
The Giants cut ties with the former first-round pick earlier this week, and it didn’t take him long to find work. The deal reunites Flowers with his one-time head coach, Tom Coughlin, who now serves as Jacksonville’s football czar. The Miami product also returns to the same state in which he played college football, albeit several hours away from Coral Gables.
The Giants made Flowers the No. 9 overall pick in 2015 for a reason – he has the right build for an NFL tackle and above-average athleticism for the position. Unfortunately, he hasn’t done much with those tools at the pro level. This year, the Giants tried to use Flowers at right tackle with new acquisition Nate Solder on the left side, but they got the same results.
To make room for Flowers, the Jaguars have placed tackle Josh Wells on injured reserve. Wells was starting at left tackle in place of Cam Robinson, who is out for the season. Just five weeks into the year, the Jaguars are primed to trot out their Plan C, Josh Walker, at left tackle. In time, Flowers could become the next player to get a shot at the job.
Giants To Stick With Eli Manning
Thursday night’s game left many wondering if this is the beginning of the end for Eli Manning. However, the two-time Super Bowl winner is not about to lose his job.
“No. We believe in Eli,” coach Pat Shurmur said when asked if there will be a quarterback change (Twitter link via Ian Rapoport of NFL.com).
Last year, coach Ben McAdoo benched Eli Manning and was swiftly rewarded with a pink slip. The Giants want to give Manning an opportunity to turn things around, but team brass may also be afraid of fan backlash.
This time around, there may be less resistance to giving Eli the hook. After going 3-13 last year, the Giants are off to a 1-5 start and are on target for another top five pick. There will always be Manning supporters in New York, but billboards on the New Jersey Turnpike may be less effective this time around.
From a cap perspective, the Giants would have an easy time moving on from Manning this offseason if they want to. Manning’s contract runs through the end of the 2019 season, but the Giants can cut him this offseason with just $6.2MM in dead money versus a cap savings of $17MM.
Unfortunately for the Giants, they don’t have any glamorous options under center if they decide to bench Manning. Currently, journeyman Alex Tanney is No. 2 on the team’s QB depth chart with fourth-round rookie Kyle Lauletta as the third-string signal caller. When asked if a change could be coming at QB2, Shurmur sidestepped the question (Twitter link via Ralph Vacchiano of SNY).
Latest On Dolphins’ DeVante Parker
Dolphins coach Adam Gase denies that the club is shopping wide receiver DeVante Parker. Sort of.
[RELATED: Dolphins Shopping DeVante Parker]
“I know I haven’t called anybody,” Gase said (Twitter link via Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com).
Gase has control over the Dolphins’ roster, so he certainly has say over whether the club will trade Parker between now and the Oct. 30 deadline. However, it’s unlikely that he is running point on any conversations involving the wide receiver. Gase’s comment could technically be true, but it’s probable that GM Chris Grier and executive Mike Tannenbaum have explored the idea with other teams.
The coach added that he spoke with Parker about trade speculation during training camp when it came up then. It’s not clear whether he’s revisited those conversations lately, but Gase would probably prefer to keep Parker’s focus on the field.
Parker, 25, has missed all but one game so far this season. There’s not much for Miami to showcase, but his trade value could improve with a strong performance against the Bears on Sunday.
The Dolphins might not get much for Parker in a trade, but the opportunity to escape Parker’s injury-guaranteed $9.387MM charge for 2019 may mean more to them at this point. Parker was once being groomed to be the Dolphins’ No. 1 wide receiver, but they could be willing to move him for a late draft pick in the next couple of weeks.
Cardinals GM Downplays Trade Rumors
The Cardinals are reportedly shopping Deone Bucannon and Haason Reddick, but GM Steve Keim is doing his best to throw cold water on the hot stove talk. In a radio interview on Friday, Keim issued a general denial towards trade speculation regarding his team.
“One part of my job is to have dialogue with other teams,” Keim said said on 98.7, Arizona’s Sports Station (via the team website). “The one thing I won’t do, I won’t confirm or deny those things in public, I think you do those things behind the scenes. But it’s a lot of gossip, people enjoy it, it’s water-cooler talk, and a lot of stuff you’ll read is certainly false. Wednesday I woke up to three different names that were brought to my attention and those conversations never happened. So I would just say, for most fans, tread lightly, because very rarely are those accurate.”
It would make plenty of sense for the Cardinals to explore the trade market between now and Oct. 30. With a 1-4 record, the Cards are the current odds-on favorite to wind up with the worst record in the draft. The defense is in the bottom third of the league in both yards allowed and scoring, and the offense has failed to properly utilize one of the league’s most talented offensive weapons in David Johnson, so this would be the logical time for a reboot.
Keim knows this, and that’s why he is looking to preserve team morale without explicitly ruling out any deal.
“Some of the names brought up to me will do nothing but bring a chuckle out of me,” Keim said. “You have to listen. You never know what the compensation is going to be. It might be something you couldn’t resist. You look back at the Heschel Walker trade with Dallas, you can never say never. … Sometimes, there’s a lot of procrastination, where you’ll call and there are a lot of conversations that go nowhere, unfortunately. But it’s part of the business and a fun one for fans to follow.”
Jaguars Place LS Carson Tinker On IR
The Jaguars have placed long snapper Carson Tinker on injured reserve with a knee injury. To replace him, they have signed free agent Matt Overton.
[RELATED: Jaguars Planning London Move?]
Tinker is no stranger to the IR, having suffered a torn ACL prior to the 2017 season. It’s the same knee this time around, but the good news is that it is not another torn ACL. It’s unclear as to whether Tinker will be a candidate to return from IR later this year or whether the Jaguars may consider releasing him with an injury settlement.
Overton was the Colts’ long snapper from 2012-16 and was considered to be one of the best at his position. He appeared in 16 games in each of his seasons with Indy and earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2013. He replaced Tinker last season in Jacksonville before landing on IR in November with a shoulder injury.
The Jaguars and their new/old long snapper will on the Cowboys in Dallas on Sunday.
Broncos Back Head Coach Vance Joseph
The Broncos have given Vance Joseph the dreaded vote of confidence. On Thursday, Broncos president and CEO Joe Ellis backed the second-year head coach when asked about his job security.
“They know the deal,” Ellis said (Twitter link via Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic). “They experienced it last year. They know what needs to be done to fix it and move forward and try to improve and get better, and play some good football for the remaining eleven games. We’re all pulling for and supporting him and we’ll see where it goes.”
The Broncos slipped to 2-3 on the season when they lost 34-16 to the lowly Jets. Things won’t get any easier here, as the Broncos will face the 5-0 Rams on Sunday.
The stats show that the Broncos have improved on offense, but the defense has been woeful, ranking 26th in the league. The Broncos could easily place the blame on Joseph for that, especially since he is a former defensive backs coach and defensive coordinator.
If Joseph were to lose his job in October it would be an extremely quick hook for the 46-year-old. Joseph has spent 21 games as the Broncos’ head coach, but the team has gone 7-14 in that span.
