Marquette King Visiting Texans
Former Broncos and Raiders punter Marquette King will visit the Texans on Tuesday, a source tells Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (on Twitter). King’s market has been relatively quiet in recent weeks, but he could find a home once the compensatory pick formula is taken out of the equation.
King, one of the most outspoken punters in NFL history, was released by the Raiders in April 2018, with reports indicating that head coach Jon Gruden wasn’t a fan of King’s personality. The 30-year-old received interest from the Vikings and Giants, but he landed with the Broncos on a three-year deal.
Unfortunately, King’s Denver run was short lived. After appearing in four games, King suffered a season-ending abductor injury and was ultimately released.
Last month, the Dolphins expressed some interest in signing King. The Bills, according to one report, also showed interest in King, though a separate report put that in question.
King’s 20 punts traveled an average of 44.1 yards last season, which ranked 22nd in the NFL. However, he managed to place seven punts inside the 20-yard line, placing him just outside of the top 10.
If signed, King would replace – or compete with – incumbent punter Trevor Daniel. Last year, Daniel averaged 43.7 yards per boot.
Details On Jahleel Addae's Contract
- Safety Jahleel Addae‘s one-year deal with the Texans is worth $1.105MM, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle (via Twitter). The deal includes an $805K base salary, $150K signing bonus, and up to an $150K roster bonus. Addae, 29, was released by the Chargers just prior to the start of free agency after spending six years with the club.

Texans Work Out WR Rashad Greene
Wideout Rashad Greene worked out for the Texans this week, reports Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle (via Twitter). The workout reportedly went well, but a deal isn’t imminent.
After earning a pair of first-team All-ACC nods during his stint with Florida State, Greene was selected by the Jaguars in the fifth round of the 2015 draft. Greene proceeded to play the next four seasons in Jacksonville, including a rookie campaign where he hauled in 19 catches and returned 18 punts. The wideout’s role was reduced in 2016, and he ended up spending the entire 2017 campaign on the injured reserve.
After being released and re-signed prior to the 2018 season, the 26-year-old went on to appear in eight games. He hauled in six catches for 60 yards, but he also had a pair of fumbles on offense, an issue he’s battled since his rookie season. Greene continued to contribute on special teams in 2018, returning seven kicks and punts.
The Texans haven’t added any noteworthy wideouts this offseason, and they watched as veteran Demaryius Thomas left for the Patriots. The team is presumably seeking some additional depth behind their top-three of DeAndre Hopkins, Will Fuller, and Keke Coutee.
Texans To Sign S Jahleel Addae
The Texans have agreed to sign free agent safety Jahleel Addae, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.
Addae, 29, was released by the Chargers just prior to the start of free agency after spending six years with the club. While a number of other safeties found hefty — and in Landon Collins‘ case, record-breaking — contracts on the open market, Addae hadn’t generated any known interest since being cut loose by Los Angeles.
The fact that he’s nearing 30 years of age may have softened Addae’s market, but his sub-par play in 2018 likely also had something to with his lack of suitors. Addae started all 16 games for the second consecutive season, but Pro Football Focus (which had previously assigned Addae high marks) graded him as just the No. 76 safety among 93 qualifiers. That rating was almost all a result of a precipitous decline in his pass coverage grade, although his run defense also took a slight step backward.
Where exactly Addae will play in Houston is unclear. The Texans have already replaced Tyrann Mathieu with free agent addition Tashaun Gipson, while 2018 rookie Justin Reid will return after playing nearly 1,000 snaps during his debut campaign. All three of Addae, Gipson, Reid played primarily free safety last season, but Addae spent the most total snaps (207) in the box, so he could play something of a third linebacker role if needed.
Texans TE Ryan Griffin Arrested
Texans tight end Ryan Griffin was arrested last night in Nashville, according to a report from Tennessean.com.
Police say the 29-year-old punched a window at a hotel (which, notably, was located near the NFL Draft). Hotel security reported Griffin to police, and the tight end was subsequently arrested and charged with vandalism and public intoxication. The player was also reportedly bleeding from his left hand, although the extent of the injury is not clear. Instead of writing Griffin a citation, police decided to arrest the player “for his own safety.” The tight end was ultimately released from jail after paying his bond.
The 2013 sixth-round pick has spent his entire six-year career with the Texans, serving in mostly a backup role. His best season came in 2016, when he hauled in a career-high 50 passes. Griffin started a career-high 11 games (in 14 appearance) in 2018, compiling 24 receptions for 305 yards. ProFootballFocus wasn’t particularly fond of his performance last season, ranking him 56th among 70 eligible tight ends.
His underwhelming advanced metrics could (partly) explain why the Texans ended up selecting San Diego State tight end Kahale Warring in the third round last night. The team also added free agent Darren Fells this offseason, so there’s no guarantee that Griffin makes it to the regular season with his current squad. Griffin signed a three-year, $9MM extension ($3.22MM guaranteed) with the Texans back in 2017.
Texans Pick Up Will Fuller’s Fifth-Year Option
The Texans have picked up wide receiver Will Fuller‘s fifth-year option, per Mark Berman of Fox 26 KRIV (via Twitter). Fuller is now under club control through 2020, and his 2020 salary — which is guaranteed for injury only — will be $10.1MM (unless the two sides work out an extension before then).
This decision further supports a report from earlier this month that Fuller is expected to make a full recovery from the ACL tear he suffered last year. Indeed, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reiterated today (via Twitter) that Fuller, who is one of the game’s best deep threats, should be ready for the 2019 opener.
Fuller, whom the Texans selected in the first round of the 2016 draft, averaged a career-high 15.7 yards per reception in seven games last season before tearing his ACL. During that time, he posted 32 catches for 503 yards and four touchdowns and reeled in 71.% percent of all passes thrown to him by Deshaun Watson.
If he can stay healthy this season, he could position himself nicely for a long-term deal.
Eagles Acquire No. 22 Pick From Ravens
The Eagles have acquired the No. 22 pick from the Ravens, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link). Baltimore will pick up No. 25, No. 127, and No. 197, tweets Field Yates of ESPN.com.
Philadelphia will use the selection to draft Washington State Andre Dillard. Given that the offensive-line needy Texans were sitting at No. 23, the Eagles made the move up the board to find a left tackle of the future.
Dillard, whom many observers ranked as the best pass-blocking tackle in the draft, will now become the long-term replacement for blinside protector Jason Peters. Until Peters hangs up his cleats, Dillard will slide in either as a swing tackle or guard.
Texans Shopping Jadeveon Clowney?
It appears the Texans would not only be open to trading Jadeveon Clowney, they might be the ones making the calls.
In what would be the third tag-and-trade scenario involving an edge defender this offseason, the Texans have contacted teams about Clowney, Charles Robinson of Yahoo.com reports (on Twitter).
The Texans made calls about possible Clowney trades just as the news broke of the Seahawks’ talks about dealing Frank Clark. Robinson categorizes the Texans’ situation with Clowney as similar to where the Seahawks stood with Clark. This is interesting, considering Houston does not have a quarterback contract like Russell Wilson‘s on its payroll and enters the first round of the draft with more than $41MM in cap space — second-most in the league.
Last week, Texans GM Brian Gaine expressed optimism about reaching an accord, though we haven’t heard positive news on that front. Clowney has been extension-eligible for two years now, and the sides have not been particularly close to a deal. They did not get close last year, when Clowney was tethered to a fifth-year option, and may not be near an agreement — hence the trade chatter — now that the outside linebacker is attached to a $17.1MM franchise tag.
With Clark and Lawrence now receiving $21MM-plus-AAV deals, Clowney likely is setting his bar higher. The 2014 No. 1 overall pick has battled injuries at multiple points in his career, including last offseason, but also made three straight Pro Bowls before turning 26. This will be an interesting situation to monitor.
Texans Looking For CB
The Texans have been poking around the veteran cornerback market for potential trade additions, Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports (on Twitter). If the Texans are able to land an established CB, they could steer away from corners in the draft.
[RELATED: Texans Open To Trading Clowney]
Right now, all eyes are on Broncos cornerback Chris Harris. The Broncos are unwilling to meet Harris’ demand for a $15MM/year deal and they are listening to offers on the elite corner. It’s not immediately clear whether the Texans are interested in giving up significant draft capital, but they may have the flexibility to give him the contract he wants, especially if they move Jadeveon Clowney.
In other Texans news, the club has received positive health news on two of its offensive players.
Texans Open To Trading Jadeveon Clowney
Could Jadeveon Clowney be on the move? The Texans are open to trading the star linebacker, according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN (via PFT).
Clowney was cuffed with the franchise tag earlier this offseason, but he has yet to sign his tender. Meanwhile, the two sides remain far apart on negotiations for a new deal.
Last week, Texans GM Brian Gaine expressed optimism about reaching an accord, though we haven’t heard positive news on that front.
“That’s the spirit of the franchise tag,” Gaine said. “You know, there’s a reason why we did that with every hope and intention to continuing to work on that. That’s a negotiation, it’s a process. It has to be a deal that makes sense for both sides, for the player, for the organization as it relates to short term and long term. That’s still the plan.”
Clowney wouldn’t be the first defensive star to be tagged-and-traded. Just this week, the Seahawks shipped standout Frank Clark to the Chiefs and Clowney could be the next to don a new jersey.
The outside linebacker was the No. 1 overall pick in 2015. Last year, he racked up nine sacks in 15 games. He’s also a difference-maker in the run game – he graded out as Pro Football Focus’ tenth-best edge defender in 2018.
