AFC Notes: Browns, Thomas, Colts

Here’s a look at the AFC:

  • Browns offensive tackle Joe Thomas, who has been ruled out for the year, says he’ll wait until the offseason to determine whether he wants to continue playing. However, he did say that he is happy playing in Cleveland for coach Hue Jackson (Twitter link via Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com). “Love Hue, loved playing for him. Playing for him was awesome and I’d definitely love to continue playing for him,” Thomas said.
  • There has been speculation about the job security of Colts coach Chuck Pagano, but Stephen Holder of the Indy Star hasn’t seen any signs of an immediate change. He notes that the team’s Monday media schedule includes Pagano’s standard news conference at its usual time. If Pagano was being shown the door today, the Colts probably would have held off of releasing the schedule. Meanwhile, team sources indicated to Holder that the team is taking a patient, long-term approach to 2017. Of course, that won’t satisfy Colts fans who are frustrated after the team’s 27-0 loss to Jacksonville on Sunday.
  • Dolphins wide receiver DeVante Parker will run and test out his injured ankle on Tuesday, Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald (Twitter link) hears. If it responds well, he is hopeful to play on Thursday against Baltimore. So far this year, Parker has 19 receptions for 236 yards and a touchdown.

Colts’ Malik Hooker Out For Year

Malik Hooker‘s season is already over. The Colts safety suffered a torn ACL and MCL in Sunday’s loss to Jacksonville, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link) reports.Malik Hooker (vertical)

The first round rookie was off to a strong start this year. Heading into this weekend, he was ranked as a top-35 safety by the advanced metrics at Pro Football Focus. He also proved to have a nose for the ball with a team-leading three interceptions.

The No. 15 overall pick is no stranger to injuries, unfortunately. In January, he underwent operations to fix a torn labrum and address a hernia issue. Still, he was viewed as a high-end pick despite the health concerns. In his final year at Ohio State, Hooker racked up 74 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for a loss, and an eye-popping seven picks. Some talent evaluators even preferred Hooker to LSU safety Jamal Adams who went nine picks earlier to the Jets.

[He’s] still so raw and you see him making all of those plays. He’s a player who will come in and look bad his first year and then be an all-pro by his third year. I think that’s his arc. No short-cut for experience,” one AFC personnel director told Lance Zierlein of NFL.com before the draft.

Turns out, Hooker looked great in his first NFL season, but his frosh campaign in the pros has ended prematurely. He’ll look to build off of his hot start in 2018.

Latest On Andrew Luck

Another week, another report on Andrew Luck from Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. Luck, of course, suffered a setback in his recovery this week, so instead of practicing, the Colts’ franchise quarterback will cease all football activities for the time being.

That leads to the obvious question of whether the 2-4 Colts should just shut Luck down and call it a day. But they are just one game back in the AFC South standings, and La Canfora says Indianapolis is committed to seeing Luck play at some point this season if his health allows (and, presumably, if the team still has a chance at a playoff berth, though La Canfora suggests the Colts want to play Luck even if they are out of contention).

La Canfora adds that the setback is not considered particularly serious. It is not uncommon for a quarterback recovering from shoulder surgery to plateau as Luck did, it just means that his potential return will be pushed back. When he does return to the practice field, he will need to go through several weeks of throwing on a limited basis before being able to throw on consecutive days and being integrated back into the offense.

All of that means that Luck will most likely not suit up until November 26 at the earliest, with a December return more likely. Until then, Jacoby Brissett will continue to start under center.

Colts To Place Robert Turbin On IR

The Colts are shutting down Bobby Turbo and firing up Marlon Mack. Robert Turbin is headed to injured reserve with a dislocated elbow, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). This was the feared, but expected outcome after he suffered the injury on Monday night. "Robert

Turbin has been playing behind Frank Gore and getting a decent number of snaps. That has been a source of frustration for Colts fans and fantasy owners who have been waiting for Mack to get an opportunity to shine. We’ll now find out of Mack can keep his production up with a heavier workload. He has 4.8 yards per carry this year off of 27 attempts, plus two touchdowns.

Turbin’s season ends with 53 yards on the ground and 56 yards through the air. Last year, he enjoyed one of his most productive NFL seasons, running for 164 yards and seven touchdowns.

The veteran has one more year to go on the two-year deal he signed in March, but it’s not a lock that he’ll be back in Indianapolis in 2018.

Setback For Colts QB Andrew Luck

Andrew Luck has suffered a major setback in his recovery and, for the first time this year, the Colts are leaving the door open to the possibility that he could land on injured reserve. At a surprise press conference on Wednesday, GM Chris Ballard announced that Andrew Luck will not be able to practice this week after experiencing soreness in his shoulder.

The belief was that Luck could conceivably return in early November, but that seems impossible given the latest news. Instead of practicing, the Colts’ franchise quarterback will receive a cortisone shot and cease all football activities.

With Jacoby Brissett under center, the Colts are off to a 2-4 start. Heading into a date with the Jekyll & Hyde Jaguars and no timetable on Luck’s return, the Colts have reason to fear that this could be a lost season.

Hindsight is 20/20, but one has to wonder why the Colts did not fortify their backup quarterback situation in the offseason. Brissett has done his best to adapt to the new system on the fly, but there has been a significant dropoff on offense.

Colts RB Robert Turbin Likely Done For Year

The Colts expect running back Robert Turbin to miss the remainder of the season after suffering an arm injury on Monday night, tweets Adam Schefter of ESPN.com.Robert Turbin (vertical)

Turbin, Indianapolis’ backup running back since 2016, has been a key contributor on both offense (31.9% of snaps) and special teams (39.6% of snaps) this season. Serving behind starter Frank Gore, the 27-year-old Turbin has managed 53 yards on the ground and 56 yards through the air. He signed a two-year contract prior to the 2016 campaign, so he’ll be an unrestricted free agent next spring.

The Colts have two young running backs who should now see increased usage with Turbin sidelined. Marlon Mack, a fourth-round rookie who’s shown game-breaking ability already this season, and former Redskin Matt Jones will pick up where Turbin left off. Indy has running back George Winn on its practice squad, and he’s now a candidate for promotion following Turbin’s injury.
