Geno Smith To Visit With Seahawks

Free-agent quarterback Geno Smith is set to visit with the Seahawks, a source told Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News. It’ll be the second visit for Smith, who met with the Chargers earlier this week but left without a deal.

The Seahawks are in need of some depth behind Russell Wilson after parting ways with backup quarterback Trevone Boykin earlier this week. Boykin was arrested Wednesday on charges of aggravated assault stemming from an incident earlier this month. Russell Wilson currently stands as the only quarterback on the Seahawks’ roster. Austin Davis was the only other quarterback on the team’s active roster outside of Wilson last season and remains a free agent.

Smith, 27, has spent his entire career in New York, with the first four years of his career spent with the Jets and last season spent as the backup for Eli Manning and the Giants. Smith wound up making a start last season as Eli Manning’s consecutive starts streak came to an end in controversial fashion. He appeared in two games in total, completing 58.3% of his passes while throwing a touchdown without an interception.

The Jets took Smith in the second round of the 2013 draft out of West Virginia. He started 29 games through his first two seasons but was relegated to backup duties behind Ryan Fitzpatrick in 2015 before departing the Jets.

Kendall Wright To Visit With Vikings

The Vikings hosted free-agent wide receiver Kendall Wright for a visit, according to ESPN’s Field Yates (on Twitter). The former Titans and Bears wideout has also visited with the Chiefs this offseason.

Wright, 28, spent last season with the Bears and hauled in 59 catches for 614 yards and a touchdown. We had Wright ranked as our No. 15 wide receiver available in free agency this offseason. Of the players on the list, he’s ranked as the third-best still available, behind Jordan Matthews and Brice Butler.

The Bears signed Wright to a one-year, $4MM deal last offseason and his stat line in his one year in Chicago was his best since 2014 with the Titans when he had 715 yards receiving and six touchdown catches. The Bears had already added Allen Robinson and Taylor Gabriel in free agency this offseason. Wright spent the first five years of his career in Tennessee after being taken with the 20th overall pick of the 2011 draft.

Wright would provide another weapon for newly-signed quarterback Kirk Cousins to go with the likes of Adam Thielen, Stefon Diggs and former first-round pick Laquon Treadwell. Minnesota indicated earlier this offseason that it would not be re-signing wide receiver Michael Floyd. Behind Treadwell, the Vikings also have Stacy Coley, Cayleb Jones and Brandon Zylstra at wide receiver.

Bills To Sign WR/PR Kaelin Clay

The Bills have signed wide receiver and return specialist Kaelin Clay, per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). Clay spent part of last season with the Bills before being waived and picked up by the Panthers.

Buffalo announced the signing Thursday afternoon.

The Utah alum was drafted by the Buccanneers in the sixth round of the 2015 draft but was released in September of that season. He spent time on the Lions’ practice squad before latching on with the Ravens toward the end of his rookie season. He helped turn some heads by collecting an 82-yard punt return for a touchdown in his first game with the Ravens.

Clay, 26, spent 2016 on injured reserve and was signed to a one-year deal by the Panthers prior to the 2017 season. He was then traded to the Bills for cornerback Kevon Seymour before eventually ending up back in Carolina. In nine appearances with the Panthers last season, Clay returned another punt for a touchdown and also had five catches for 56 yards receiving.

The Bills are currently projected to have Micah Hyde return punts next season. They also have Marcus Murphy projected to return kickoffs. Clay’s addition also adds depth to the team’s receiving corps with the status of Zay Jones to open the season uncertain following an arrest earlier this month on suspicion of felony vandalism.

Trevone Boykin Arrested For Aggravated Assault

Former Seahawks quarterback Trevone Boykin was arrested and booked into the Mansfield Law Enforcement Center in Mansfield, Texas on charges of aggravated assault with serious bodily injury, WFAA in Dallas reports (Twitter link).

The charges stem from a March 21 incident during which Boykin allegedly assaulted his girlfriend Shabrika Bailey. She claims that an extremely violent incident with Boykin left her with a broken jaw and a constricted airway, resulting in a lengthy hospital stay. She also says that this was not a one-time event.

According to the police report, Mansfield Police Officers responded to a call at Parkland Hospital in Dallas about the alleged incident on March 21. The following day, detectives executed a search warrant at the location of the offense and gathered items of evidence. During the investigation, the detectives observed cameras inside the residence that may have captured the assault and removed a recording device that was connected to the cameras. After obtaining a search warrant for the contents of the camera, the detectives reviewed the footage on Wednesday which appeared to detail an assault. Boykin was arrested later that day and his bond has yet to be set.

The Seahawks released the quarterback on Tuesday after the allegations surfaced. Boykin responded to the allegations on Tuesday:

I understand the Seahawks’ decision to release me. The story that was reported casts a bad light on the organization and on me. I want to be clear that the story is false,” Boykin said (Twitter link via Ian Rapoport of NFL.com). “The police have taken statements from the accuser, another witness, and me. All of these statements confirm that I was not involved in the physical altercation. This woman has lied about me and it has cost my job. I know guilt by association is real. This person has fabricated a story and I am suffering the consequences. I will let the legal system run its course and I know I will be vindicated.”

This marks the third arrest for Boykin in a little over a year. On March 27, 2017, he was arrested for suspicion of public intoxication and marijuana possession. On April 6, authorities picked up Boykin on a possible parole violation.

Boykin was with the Seahawks for his entire NFL career and was slated to return for another season as Russell Wilson‘s backup. He won’t be doing that now and, if the allegations are proven to be true, it is extremely unlikely that he’ll ever play in the league again.

Seahawks CB Justin Coleman Signs RFA Tender

Seahawks cornerback Justin Coleman has signed his second-round restricted free agent tender, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport (Twitter link).

Coleman was one of 14 NFL restricted free agents to be tendered at the second-round level, and he’s the third — following Falcons guard Ben Garland and Jaguars running back Corey Grant — to officially sign his tender. There was no rush for Coleman to ink his tender, as RFAs have until April 20 to work out offer sheets with other clubs. However, it was unlikely that any NFL team would have been willing to sacrifice a second-round pick in order to land Coleman.

After spending two seasons in New England, Coleman was traded to Seattle in the 2017 offseason for a seventh-round pick in 2018. Mainly serving as a nickel back with the Seahawks, Coleman impressed when he was on the field, recording two interceptions and returning both of them for touchdowns.

Coleman is expected to slot back as the nickel in 2018, despite the release of veterans Richard Sherman and DeShawn Shead earlier in free agency.

Latest On Giants, Odell Beckham Jr.

The Giants are seeking at least two first round picks for Odell Beckham Jr., but right now it doesn’t look like any team will meet that price. Other teams around the NFL believe that GM Dave Gettleman might have to settle for “a couple second-round picks, [or] something in that neighborhood,” according to Tom Pelissero of NFL.com (Twitter link).

Meanwhile, Pelissero (Twitter link) hears that the Rams rumored interest in OBJ is real. There are a few complications, however, including his contract. Beckham Jr. is under contract for this season for about $8.5MM. He could be kept under control through 2020 (and, theoretically, even 2021) through the franchise tag, but Beckham is insistent on getting a contract extension this offseason. Apparently, Beckham is prepared to sit out this year if he doesn’t get the high-priced long-term deal that he is after.

Even beyond the contract, there are concerns about Beckham’s health and off-field behavior. Acquiring teams are well aware of the potential headaches involved here and the Giants’ potential return may be limited by those issues. Still, considering the remarkable performances the LSU product put up before last year’s ankle injury, there will be a market for him.

OBJ’s name started making the rounds in trade rumors in recent days, but this isn’t the first time it has became a topic for the Giants. The G-Men got their first trade offer for the wide receiver right after the viral pizza video surfaced, Rapoport tweets, and it was a lowball offer that was quickly rejected.

Publicly, the Giants insist that they are not shopping the young phenom.

Broncos Acquire Su’a Cravens From Redskins

The Broncos have acquired strong safety Su’a Cravens from the Redskins. The deal will see a fifth-round pick (No. 163 overall) go to Washington in return (Twitter link via Mike Klis of 9News).

Also, as part of the deal, the Broncos and Redskins will swap fourth- and fifth-round picks. The Broncos will move down from No. 109 to No. 113 in the fourth round and from No. 142 to No. 149 in the fifth round. The Redskins will also receive a sixth-round pick in 2020 if Cravens appears in a playoff game for Denver. There are a lot of components in this deal, but the Broncos are essentially acquiring a talented former second-round pick for a fifth-round choice and change.

Cravens decided late in the 2016 offseason to retire from football. The news caught the Redskins completely off guard as they were banking on Cravens to start at one of their safety spots. The youngster reversed his decision hours later, but the Redskins were still skeptical about his desire to continue playing. After a short stay on the NFI list, the Redskins parked him on the reserve/left squad list, barring him from playing in 2017.

The versatile defender was diagnosed with Post Concussion Syndrome, according to a statement released by his agent late last year, but he is now “asymptomatic and cleared to return back to all things football.” The Redskins insisted that they would not trade Cravens this offseason, but they either had a change of heart or were not being entirely truthful.

We’re not trading him,” coach Jay Gruden said just weeks ago. “I just saw that on the ticker. He’s still a member of this football team and we have every intention of seeing where he’s at. I’ll have to talk to him and see where he’s at mentally. Physically, I know he’s going to be in great shape. The big thing is, is this something that he wants to do? He has to commit to it full time. He’s a good football player, there’s no doubt about it. He’s a great kid. I’m sure it will work out for him.”

The Broncos’ faith in safeties Darian Stewart, Justin Simmons, and Will Parks led them to part ways with former Pro Bowler T.J. Ward last September. If Cravens is healthy and ready to rededicate himself to football, Simmons or Stewart could be displaced from the starting lineup with Parks pushed a bit further down the depth chart. Simmons was arguably Denver’s best safety in 2017 and he plays at strong safety, so it will be an interesting situation to watch. Cravens may also see time at linebacker, as he did in his rookie season with the Redskins.

As a rookie, Cravens tallied 34 tackles, one sack, five passes defended, and one interception. In his ten games, Cravens graded out as the league’s No. 27 linebacker, per Pro Football Focus.

Latest On Giants, Odell Beckham Jr.

The Giants aren’t shopping Odell Beckham Jr., but it doesn’t sound like they’re ruling out a trade either. When asked about the wide receiver at Tuesday’s owners’ meetings, Giants head coach Pat Shurmur said, “He’s on our team right now,” (Twitter link via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com).

Shurmur’s comments echo those of owner John Mara who recently said he is “tired of answering questions about” Beckham’s behavior and refused to say that “anybody is untouchable.” Meanwhile, OBJ is considering a holdout if he does not get a lucrative extension that will take him beyond the 2018 season.

Earlier this month, a video appeared to capture Beckham getting involved with drugs. His mood swings have also caused some headaches for the team in the past, though Shurmur’s new administration will try to help him stay focused on football.

Reading between the lines, it sounds like Beckham can be had via trade, but it would be extremely costly for any team acquiring him. The Giants still seem set on winning in 2018 and they’ll need a big return in order to replace Beckham’s production. As it stands, Brandon Marshall and Sterling Shepard are the next best wide receivers on the Giants’ depth chart.

Rams Sign Ndamukong Suh

The Rams have agreed to sign Ndamukong Suh, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (on Twitter). It’s a one-year, $14MM deal for the defensive tackle. The team has also confirmed the deal via press release.

We are excited have Ndamukong as a part of the Los Angeles Rams,” general manager Les Snead said in a statement. “He’s been an outstanding player in this league and we are looking forward to him being a part of our defense.”

Suh has long been regarded as one of the game’s best interior pass rushers. Now, he is slated to join defensive tackle Aaron Donald and defensive lineman Michael Brockers on the front line of Wade Phillips’ 3-4 scheme. Then again, given their aggressiveness in recent weeks, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Rams listen to trade offers for Brockers rather than moving him permanently to the outside. Brockers is slated to carry an $11MM cap charge this season and the Rams could perhaps use that extra flexibility and draft capital to add an impact wide receiver.

After being released by the Dolphins earlier this month, at least five teams got in on the chase for Suh, including the Titans, Saints, and Jets. The Jets reportedly more money that everyone else but, in the end, he took a little bit less to play in sunny Los Angeles with a chance to win a Super Bowl ring. Suh was also scheduled to meet with Jon Gruden‘s Raiders, but that visit was called off.

Suh has racked up 51.5 sacks and four forced fumbles over the course of his career. The five-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro has also been remarkably durable, missing only two games in eight years.

Suh also hasn’t slowed much with age. He is now 31 years old, but he still managed 20.5 pressures and and 4.5 sacks from the interior last year while grading as the league’s No. 5 defensive tackle in 2017, per Pro Football Focus. Last season, Suh played on 883 snaps for Miami, the second-most of any defensive tackle in the league.

Saints Meet With WR Cameron Meredith

The Saints met with Bears restricted free agent wideout Cameron Meredith on Saturday, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.

Chicago tendered Meredith at the original round level, meaning the Saints — or any other club that signs Meredith to an offer sheet — wouldn’t be required to give the Bears draft pick compensation if Chicago opts not to match an offer sheet. New Orleans is now the third club to take a visit with Meredith, joining the Colts and Ravens.

Meredith is coming off a torn ACL, so his free agent visits are likely involving medical checks. But if his knee is clean, Meredith could be a bargain addition for an interested team. In 2016, the now-25-year-old Meredith posted 66 receptions for 888 yards and four touchdowns. Given that he tore his ACL last September, Meredith should conceivably be ready for the start of the 2018 campaign, or at least soon thereafter.

The Saints, for their part, don’t have much depth behind starters Michael Thomas and Ted Ginn Jr. New Orleans tendered Willie Snead at the original round level (and has witnessed him take a visit with the Ravens), while the team non-tendered Brandon Coleman. Meredith could theoretically replace Snead as the Saints’ slot receiver, and provide depth alongside Tommylee Lewis, Austin Carr, and Paul Turner.
