Jets Notes: Rodgers, Whitehead, Mosley

Aaron Rodgers underwent surgery on his torn Achilles in Los Angeles yesterday, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The Jets quarterback posted on Instagram that the surgery “went great” and he’s “on the road to recovery.”

While Rodgers is now focused on his rehab, the fallout from the future Hall of Famer’s season-ending injury continues. According to Dianna Russini and Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, Rodgers was not a fan of the play calls that involved cut blocks, and he voiced his displeasure to the coaching staff. Two of the QB’s four snaps on Monday night involved the cut block, including the play that injured Rodgers.

Packers offensive tackle David Bakhtiari, who spent years blocking for Rodgers, also noticed the team’s peculiar blocking strategy.

“I blocked for Aaron for a decade,” Packers offensive tackle David Bakhtiari told The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman. “I’ve gotten a lot of s— from him about cutting and pretty much the rule of thumb, at least working with him, is you don’t cut unless Aaron says so in the huddle or at the line of scrimmage. And that’s no dig at Aaron. … When people were defending and saying that’s what they’re supposed to do, I was like: Well, clearly there’s miscommunication. Because if your coach is telling you to do that, then he doesn’t know Aaron. And I know for a fact, Aaron definitely has probably brought it up. So I’m like: You’re not all on the same page. Again, that’s not the reason why (the sack) happened. There’s so many other factors.”

Blame has also been placed on MetLife Stadium’s turf. Michael Rosenberg of SI.com spoke to three experts on Achilles tendons, and while they acknowledged that turf could certainly cause injuries, it’s unlikely to cause this type of injury.

More notes out of New York…

  • Jordan Whitehead was a standout in Week 1 for the Jets, with his performance earning him AFC Defensive Player of the Week. The safety also managed to secure one of his season-long incentives in just one game, with his three interceptions earning him a $250K bonus, per ESPN’s Field Yates. Whitehead signed a two-year, $14.5MM deal with the Jets last March.
  • As ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler notes, Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley had his $17MM non-guaranteed salary locked in during the season opener. After being limited to only two games during his first season with the Jets, Mosley has emerged as a defensive leader in New York over the past two seasons, collecting 326 tackles in 33 games. The veteran inked a five-year, $85MM deal with the Jets back in 2019.
  • While the Jets continue to scour the market for some reinforcement at quarterback, Zach Wilson will be the definitive QB1 moving forward. While Rodgers will be sidelined for the entire 2023 campaign, the veteran quarterback still had a lasting impact on his younger counterpart. “I feel like I’ve been trying to copy every little thing he’s doing, from his footwork to the coaching tips he has given us,” Wilson said today (via ESPN’s Rich Cimini). “He’s done an amazing job, more than we could ask for as quarterbacks.”

Alamaba WR Jameson Williams Declares For Draft

Jameson Williams is going pro. The junior wide receiver made the announcement on his Instagram account early this afternoon, joining Evan Neal as the second Crimson Tide underclassman so far to declare for the 2022 NFL Draft.

Williams leaves the ranks of college football having lost two consecutive national championship games: one as a Buckeye in the 2020 season and one as a member of the Crimson Tide this year. Williams initially signed with Ohio State in 2019 but was starved for targets behind fellow first-round hopefuls Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson.

The change of scenery was a smart move for Williams as he went on the have the second-best receiving season for an Alabama receiver since Amari Cooper, behind only Heisman Trophy winner Devonta Smith. Williams finished fifth in the nation with 1,572 receiving yards and tied for third in the nation with 15 receiving touchdowns. Williams has length and speed to dominate at the next level.

There is a bit of a hurdle for Williams as he tore his ACL in the Tide’s National Championship Game versus Georgia. The injury rang a familiar unpleasant tone with Alabama fans as they saw a similarly timed injury sideline their number-two receiver John Metchie III in the team’s SEC Championship Game against Georgia.

Williams was projected as an extremely high draft pick before the injury. While the potential threat of having to sit out his entire rookie season won’t do anything to help the 20-year old’s draft stock, whichever team takes a chance on Williams will have a do-it-all receiver who can win the jump balls, go deep, and return kicks. We shouldn’t be waiting too long to hear his name.

Marvin Jones’ Youngest Son Passes Away

A tragedy has struck the NFL today. Lions wide receiver Marvin Jones and his wife Jazmyn Jones lost their youngest son, Marlo Jones, on Friday. Marlo was the youngest of the couples five children and was just six months old. No details have been released surrounding the circumstances of the death.

The Lions broke the news through a team press release earlier today.

Jones later confirmed the news in an Instagram post that featured a photo of Marlo and the following statement: “Yesterday the Lord called home a piece of my family’s heart, Marlo. It is hard to believe that our little angel, our fighter from day one, our son ‘Marlito’ has unfortunately passed away and is no longer here with us. Marlo, the joy that you brought to us everyday, with that smile, and that energy was like heaven on earth. You will always be in our hearts. We will always remember you. We did not get the chance to hear your first words (It would’ve been in Spanish too) ☺️. We didn’t get to see you run with your brothers and sister, you ran with them with your eyes everyday. We know that everything that We do from here on out will be with you. Every step we take, you will be with us. Whenever we have a bad day, We will think of your smile. We miss you already buddy and will forever love you. Rest peacefully our sweet baby boy. You have gained your wings.

The entire staff at Pro Football Rumors offers our condolences to the Jones family.

Rob Gronkowski Announces Retirement

Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski has announced his retirement via his Instagram page. Gronkowski released a lengthy statement in the caption to the post, saying in part:

It all started at 20 years old on stage at the NFL draft when my dream came true, and now here I am about to turn 30 in a few months with a decision I feel is the biggest of my life so far. I will be retiring from the game of football today. I am so grateful for the opportunity that Mr. Kraft and Coach Belichick gave to me when drafting my silliness in 2010. My life experiences over the last 9 years have been amazing both on and off the field. The people I have meet, the relationships I have built, the championships I have been apart of, I just want to thank the whole New England Patriots organization for every opportunity I have been giving and learning the great values of life that I can apply to mine.”

Gronkowski has flirted with retirement in the past, but it felt especially sincere this time around, and the recent increased chatter about retirement turned out to be accurate. The surefire future Hall of Fame member was reportedly nearly traded to the Lions last offseason, but threatened to retire in order to block it. We heard earlier this morning that the Patriots “aggressively courted” Jared Cook before he decided to sign with the Saints, which in hindsight might’ve foreshadowed this move.

Gronkowski entered the league as a second round pick out of Arizona back in 2010. He immediately became a star, and was a generational talent at the tight end position. But he was done in by injuries the past handful of seasons, with recurrent back injuries and other ailments. If this really is it, he’ll be retiring at the age of 29. Gronkowski is hanging up his cleats as a three-time Super Bowl champion and a four-time first-team All-Pro.

Gronk had some big moments this past season, but overall didn’t look like his old self. He appeared in 13 games, catching 47 passes for 682 yards and three touchdowns. For his career, he’ll finish with 521 receptions, 7,861 yards, and 79 touchdowns. He wasn’t just a pass-catcher, as the Patriots’ running game always ran through his blocking. He’ll go down as one of, if not the, best tight ends of all time. Gronkowski has numerous off-field interests, and has signaled an interest in going into acting in the past.

The Patriots signed former Broncos tight end Matt LaCaosse earlier this month, but are almost certainly not done adding to the position. They’re armed with 12 draft picks, and should be a good bet to take a tight end early next month.

Eager to see some of this year’s top draft picks in their new game day uniforms? Our Instagram churned out jersey swaps for Browns defensive end Myles Garrett, Bears quarterback Mitch Trubisky, Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette, and Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson moments after they were drafted.

Yearning for a preview of Jamaal Charles in a Broncos jersey? We’ve got you covered. We also did a fantastic jersey swap of Adrian Peterson with the Saints. With the NFL Draft around the corner, we’ll be doing some speculative jersey swaps on potential picks. Popular thought has the Browns taking Texas A&M star Myles Garrett No. 1 overall and we have to admit that he looks good in Cleveland gear. If the Browns select UNC quarterback Mitch Trubisky at No. 12, we can assure you that his guns will pop in a Browns cutoff.

Yearning for a preview of Marshawn Lynch in Raiders’ silver and black? We’ve got you covered. We also did jersey swaps on Adrian Peterson with the Raiders, Packers, and Patriots, though at least two of those clubs probably won’t be in the running for him at this point. And, if you want to know what Johnny Manziel would look like in a Saints uni, we’ve got that too.

This week, we imagined what pending free agent Kirk Cousins might look like in a Jets jersey. Cousins is the No. 1 player in our 2017 Free Agent Power Rankings and if the Redskins allow him to reach the open market, the quarterback-needy Jets could come calling. Speaking of Gang Green, the Cowboys and Broncos were among the teams to reach out about a possible Sheldon Richardson trade before last week’s deadline. We asked readers to weigh in on Richardson’s situation and tell us where he might end up this spring. Other recent posts include a photoshop of MMA hopeful Greg Hardy in the octagon and a jersey swap which previewed Tim Tebow in Mets gear before his baseball debut.

Greg Hardy recently announced that he is going to try his hand at MMA and our Instagram account gave readers a sneak peek at what the controversial former defensive end will look like in the cage. Moments after Colin Kaepernick was named as the 49ers’ starting quarterback, we asked our Instagram followers to weigh in on Chip Kelly‘s decision. And, when Gang Green claimed Austin Seferian-Jenkins off waivers, we were the first to bring you a preview of him in Jets gear.

Wondering what Joey Bosa will look like in his new Chargers jersey now that he’s under contract? We got you covered. When Tim Tebow auditioned for MLB teams this week, we asked readers for their take and even shoehorned in Rick And Morty. Shortly after the Rams used the No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff, we were first with a realistic jersey swap. Ditto for Arian Foster and the Dolphins after they agreed to a one-year deal.
