The Spring League Announces Camp Roster

Since we learned last year that there’d be a spring football league in 2017, several former NFL stars have committed to the endeavor. Today, The Spring League announced (via Twitter) their full training camp roster.

Ahmad BradshawAs was previously reported, defensive end Greg Hardy, tight end Kellen Winslow Jr., and running back Ben Tate were among the major names to have committed to the league. Former cornerback Brandon Browner was reportedly involved, but he was curiously omitted from the training camp roster. Former Giants and Colts running back Ahmad Bradshaw is seemingly the biggest addition to the roster since the last update.

The Spring League is composed of four teams, with the rosters comprised of veteran free agents. Ultimately, six games will be played between April 5 through April 26. Players who are currently on NFL rosters are not eligible to participate.

Kellen Winslow, Ben Tate Join Spring League

The Spring League kicks off in April and it will feature some notable names looking to resurrect their football careers. Defensive end Greg Hardy, tight end Kellen Winslow Jr., cornerback Brandon Browner, and running back Ben Tate are among the players who have been confirmed as participants, according to a press release. Greg Hardy (vertical)

Winslow has not played in an NFL game since the 2013 season and we haven’t heard much from him since he worked out for the Packers last August. Tate, a former second-round pick, showed lots of promise in Houston but could not capitalize on a starting opportunity with the Browns in 2014. Hardy and Browner first committed to the league in early March.

The Spring League consists of four teams comprised of veteran free agents. The league will conduct practices and play six games from April 5 through April 26. Players who are currently on NFL rosters will not be eligible to participate.

The league has secured five quarterbacks thus far, including Chiefs 2011 fifth-round pick Ricky Stanzi and NFL practice squad journeyman McLeod Bethel-Thompson. At wide receiver, there’s former Ram Brandon Gibson, Jets 2014 fourth-round pick Jalen Saunders, and one-time Bills WR2 David Nelson. Former Jets defensive back Ellis Lankster and Texans 2013 third-round defensive tackle Sam Montgomery will also be suiting up for The Spring League next month.

Earlier updates:

  • According to Field Yates of ESPN.com (via Twitter), the Colts have waived former Arena Football League offensive lineman Chad Anderson, who originally signed with the team last month.
  • Despite catching a touchdown in the Bengals‘ preseason opener, wide receiver Conner Vernon was one of three players cut by the team today, writes Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. Per Hobson, the team also waived wideout Jeremy Johnson and defensive tackle Zach Minter. The Bengals, who now have 86 players on the roster, may have interest in filling one of their open roster spots with a quarterback as Jason Campbell and A.J. McCarron work through some health issues, Hobson adds.
  • The Cardinals created a third opening on their 90-man roster today, cutting linebacker Trevardo Williams just a few days after claiming him off waivers. Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com has the details.
  • Wide receiver Kofi Hughes has been waived by the Texans, according to Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle (via Twitter).
  • The Lions swapped one defender for another today, signing defensive back Nate Ness and parting ways with linebacker Cory Greenwood to open up the necessary roster spot, tweets Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com.

Minor Moves: Seahawks, Steelers, Cowboys

There were tons of housekeeping moves in the NFL yesterday and we’ll keep track of the latest here..

Gilreath was cut by the Raiders after a short stint in June. The Seahawks also signed offensive guard C.J. Davis, according to agent Neil Schwartz (on Twitter).
  • The Seahawks cut tight end Chase Dixon and waived-injured offensive lineman Jared Smith, Wilson tweets. Seattle signed Smith to a reserve contract in February and added Dixon as a UDFA in May.
  • The Steelers cut linebacker Kion Wilson, Wilson tweets.

  • The Buccaneers have been awarded linebacker Brandon Magee off waivers from the Browns, tweets Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun.
  • The Bengals have signed rookie wide receiver Jeremy Johnson, according to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Cincinnati Enquirer (on Twitter). The SMU product was recently cut loose by the Patriots.

Minor Moves: Lions, Patriots

Today’s minor moves:

  • The Lions were awarded receiver Reese Wiggins off waivers from the Patriots, according to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post (Twitter link). The East Carolina product signed with New England after going undrafted.
  • In a corresponding roster move, the Lions waived receiver Naaman Roosevelt (per Wilson on Twitter), who had his best season with the Bills in 2011, catching 16 passes for 257 yards and one touchdown.
  • The Patriots have filled one of their open roster spots by signing receiver Tyler McDonald, according to his agency ARN Sports and Entertainment (via Twitter). McDonald went undrafted out of South Carolina State.
  • More from New England and Detroit: Wilson tweets that Jeremy Johnson (Patriots) and J.B. Shugarts (Lions) went unclaimed off waivers.

AFC Notes: Pats, Flowers, Raiders, Chiefs

The Patriots made a pair of roster moves today in advance of training camp, parting ways with two undrafted rookie receivers. According to a press release, Jeremy Johnson and Reese Wiggins were cut by the team, and will become free agents assuming they clear waivers. The cuts give New England three total openings on the club’s 90-man roster, so it shouldn’t be long before we get word on which players will be occupying those open spots.

Let’s round up a few more items from around the AFC….

  • Appearing on SiriusXM NFL Radio today (Twitter links), Brandon Flowers said he signed with the Chargers because he saw while he was with the Chiefs that the AFC’s other Wild Card team was close to being a legit contender. The veteran cornerback also downplayed the idea that he was a poor fit in Bob Dutton’s defense last year in Kansas City, pointing to injury woes instead as the reason for his 2013 struggles.
  • Oakland City Council voted last night to approve the Athletics’ lease to remain at O.co Coliseum, but only if a handful of small tweaks to the agreement were agreed upon by the MLB club. Will Kane of the San Francisco Chronicle and Matthew Artz of the Oakland Tribune have the details on the latest developments, and how they could affect the Raiders.
  • We haven’t heard any concrete updates lately on the progress made by Alex Smith and the Chiefs toward an extension, but Smith reiterated today that he loves the city, his coaches, and his teammates, and would like to get something done (Twitter link via Randy Covitz of the Kansas City Star).
  • The Jaguars committed twice as much guaranteed money this offseason to Zane Beadles as they did to any other free agent, prompting Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union to explore what kind of impact the team’s new offensive lineman will make.
  • As was the case a year ago, Cameron Wake and Mike Wallace were once again Jason Fitzgerald’s selections for the best and worst contracts on the Dolphins‘ books (link via OverTheCap.com).
  • The pressure will be on Eric Decker to produce like a No. 1 receiver for the Jets in 2014 and beyond, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post, who takes a closer look at the club’s top free agent addition.

AFC East Notes: Bills, Pouncey, Pats, Jets

Another potential suitor for the Bills has entered the mix, according to Tim Graham of the Buffalo News, who reports that C. Dean Metropoulos, the owner of the Pabst Brewing Company, has interest in owning the franchise. After finishing as a runner-up to Shad Khan for the Jaguars three years ago, Metropoulos and his family have “a continued interest in acquiring an NFL franchise and [expect] to review any such opportunity,” a spokesman told Graham.

Here’s more on the Bills’ sale and some other items from around the AFC East:

  • Graham also has an update on another possible buyer for the Bills, writing for the Buffalo News that Terry Pegula, owner of the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres, recently sold 75,000 acres of Utica and Marcellus Shale leases in West Virginia and Ohio for $1.75 billion. While it’s still not clear how much – if any – interest Pegula has in buying the Bills, the recent sales by his East Resources Inc. and another undisclosed company will make him a “much more formidable bidder” if he decides to enter the mix.
  • As both Joel Corry of CBSSports.com and Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald observe (via Twitter), Dolphins center Mike Pouncey shares an agent with his brother, so matching or topping Maurkice Pouncey‘s extension figures to be a goal for Mike when the time comes.
  • After waiving R.J. Mattes yesterday to clear a roster spot, the Patriots have signed wide receiver Jeremy Johnson, a source tells Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post. Johnson, who went undrafted out of SMU, participated in the Ravens’ rookie minicamp last month.
  • Within a roundup of Jets notes, ESPN.com’s Rich Cimini notes that head coach Rex Ryan initially wasn’t sold on drafting Maryland cornerback Dexter McDougle, but that others in the organization – such as defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman – eased his concerns. McDougle is the only one of 12 Jets draftees who remains unsigned.
  • Jets wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal tells Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News he believes it’s still too early to conclude that former second-round wideout Stephen Hill is a bust. “I have a hard time labeling a guy a bust when he’s done everything in his power,” Lal said. “Luck in terms of injuries hasn’t been on his side. Therefore, he hasn’t produced consistently. And he’s still only 23 years old.”
