Redskins Place Kedric Golston On IR

Kedric Golston is done for the year, Redskins coach Jay Gruden told reporters (Twitter link via Mike Jones of The Washington Post). In a related move, rookie defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis will be called up from the practice squad. Kedric Golston (vertical)

Golston signed a one-year, $1MM deal with the Redskins this offseason. Unfortunately, the nose tackle’s season is already over after he went down with a strained hamstring on the first play of Sunday’s game against Cowboys. The Redskins will now rely on Ziggy Hood as their primary nose tackle, though the Redskins other options for depth.

Over the last ten years for the Redskins, Golston has appeared in 142 games with 53 starts. Ioannidis, a Temple product, was selected in the fifth round of this year’s draft. It was a surprise to many when he didn’t make the 53-man roster, but he passed through waivers and the Redskins were able to re-sign him to the taxi squad. We’ll find out now how NFL-ready Ioannidis is.

Patriots Will Not Sign A Quarterback This Week

Tom Brady is out for two more games and Jimmy Garoppolo will likely be sidelined for Thursday night’s contest against the Texans. Still, the Patriots have no plans at this time to bring in or sign another quarterback this week, sources tell ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (on Twitter). Julian Edelman (vertical)

With no Brady, Garoppolo, or outside help, the Patriots will go into Thursday night’s contest with Jacoby Brissett as their starting QB and wide receiver Julian Edelman as their backup. Edelman, 30, was a three-year starter at quarterback for Kent State. In his senior season, Edelman threw for 1,820 yards and 13 touchdowns against 11 interceptions. Despite his years of experience under center, it has been several years since he has played quarterback. If Brissett is forced to exit Thursday night’s game for any reason, things could get really interesting for the Patriots.

Ryan Lindley and Matt Flynn – two QBs with experience with the Pats’ playbook – are among those available on the open market. For one reason or another, the Pats are passing on signing either one for now.

Adrian Peterson Has Torn Meniscus

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has a torn meniscus in his right knee, coach Mike Zimmer said in a radio interview (link via Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press). It’s not immediately clear how long Peterson could be sidelined for and Zimmer did not rule out that Peterson might be able to play on Sunday against the Panthers. Adrian Peterson

Peterson went down in the third quarter of Sunday’s 17-14 win over the rival Packers. The Vikings managed to win in their real U.S. Bank Stadium debut, but it was a bittersweet W after Peterson went down.

As Tomasson notes, a torn meniscus is not necessarily a season-ender. Chris Johnson claims to have played much of the 2013 season with a torn meniscus and he ran for 1,077 yards that season. Of course, after Peterson struggled through the first two games of the 2016 season, it’s fair to wonder how productive the 2012 MVP can be if he plays through the injury.

Chargers Place Danny Woodhead On IR

Bad news for the Chargers as running back Danny Woodhead is done for the year. Tests revealed that the veteran suffered a torn ACL, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. The Chargers officially announced that they are placing him on IR."<strong

Woodhead, 31, appeared in all 16 games for the Chargers last season, catching 80 passes for 755 yards and six touchdowns. He also added 336 yards on the ground off of 98 carries and three touchdowns, but it was his pass-catching ability out of the backfield that really boosted the Bolts’ defense. This year, he was expected to serve as a complement to sophomore tailback Melvin Gordon. Now, the Chargers may lean more on UDFA Kenneth Farrow and former Giant Andre Williams.

Through two games this season, Woodhead had six catches for 35 yards and one score. He also ran for 116 yards off of just 19 attempts. He is in the final year of the two-year extension he signed with the Chargers in 2014, so his future beyond this year is uncertain.

To fill his spot on the roster, the Chargers are signing wide receiver Griff Whalen. Whalen, 26, spent the offseason with the Dolphins but was ultimately cut by Miami. He auditioned for San Diego last week, leading to today’s deal.

Seahawks Lose Fifth-Round Pick

The Seahawks will lose their fifth-round pick in 2017 for violating the league’s rules regarding contact practices in the offseason, according to an announcement from the NFL. The Seahawks will also lose a week of OTAs and face a fine of $400K. Coach Pete Carroll personally will have to pay $200K in fines for his role. Pete Carroll

The NFL and NFLPA’s agreement on excessive contact in offseason workouts was breached on June 6th when Carroll’s team doled out hard hits during OTAs. This is not the first team that the Seahawks have run afoul of these regulations and, therefore, they were docked a draft choice in addition to the fines.

In this year’s draft, there were three instances of teams losing draft picks as a result of rules violations. The Patriots (first round), Chiefs (third round), and the Falcons (fifth round) were all penalized for different infractions by the league office.

Injuries For Browns’ Nassib, Erving

This has been a rough Monday morning for the Browns. Browns defensive end Carl Nassib suffered a broken hand yesterday and will undergo surgery, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). Meanwhile, starting center Cameron Erving suffered a bruised lung (Twitter link via Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com). Meanwhile, as we learned earlier, the Browns fear that they will be without quarterback Josh McCown for quite some time. Carl Nassib (vertical)

Nassib, a Penn State product, put himself on the NFL map in 2015 when he racked up 15.5 sacks, 46 tackles, and 19.5 tackles for a loss. Cleveland had high hopes for the defensive end after snagging him in the third round of this year’s draft, but this latest setback could keep him out for a while. Nassib suffered the injury during the second half of Browns’ 25-20 loss to the Ravens on Sunday.

There’s currently no timetable for Erving, but the expectation is that he’ll be out for at least a month. Thankfully, the center was released from the hospital earlier today. Erving was selected with the No. 19 overall pick in the 2015 draft. As a rookie, Erving appeared in all 16 regular season games with four starts.

Browns’ McCown To Miss Significant Time?

Could the Browns lose two quarterbacks in two weeks? That’s the fear in Cleveland right now after Josh McCown hurt his left shoulder on Sunday. The team expects him to be “out awhile,” though they’ll have a better handle on his condition after he gets an MRI done today, Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain Dealer writes. Josh McCown (vertical)

If McCown has to miss multiple games, the Browns can be expected to look out-of-house for quarterback solutions. In theory, third-round rookie Cody Kessler is the next man up and the team is said to be happy with what they’ve seen out of him this offseason. However, despite the promise he has shown and the veteran guidance he has received from McCown, he may not be ready for live action just yet. The Browns do have rookie Kevin Hogan on the taxi squad and wide receiver Terrelle Pryor has quarterback experience, but neither one presents a better option than Kessler.

McCown, 37, went 1-7 as a starter for the Browns last season. In his one game under center for Cleveland this year, the veteran completed 20 of his 33 passes and threw two touchdowns with two interceptions. Next up for the Browns is a Sunday road contest against the Dolphins.

Latest On Jimmy Garoppolo

The Patriots got some good news today with regards to Jimmy Garoppolo‘s injury. It looks like quarterback won’t start on Thursday night against the Texans, but there is hope he’ll back by Week 4, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. Ideally, the Pats would like to have Garoppolo in uniform against Houston, but they might not have to delve into the third-string realm for two straight weeks before Tom Brady‘s return. And, although it may be a longshot, the Patriots have not given up hope yet that Garoppolo can play on Thursday, a team source tells Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (on Twitter). Jimmy Garoppolo (vertical)

Garoppolo suffered a sprained AC joint in his throwing shoulder on Sunday in the team’s 31-24 win over Miami. After Garoppolo was taken out by Kiko Alonso‘s hit, Jacoby Brissett was put in the game for the first time in his NFL career. The third-round rookie got the job done, completing 6-of-9 passes as he guided New England the rest of the way. Brissett will be asked to provide that same poise from wire-to-wire on Thursday night, but the Pats likely won’t have to depend on him for two games in a row.

Now, we’ll wait and see what the Pats do about their backup quarterback situation for their upcoming game. Brissett stands as the team’s only healthy QB on the active roster and there are no signal callers currently on the practice squad. The Pats may turn to someone they have a recent history with, like Ryan Lindley or Matt Flynn.

AFC East Notes: Bills, Roman, Jets, Patriots

Here’s the latest from the AFC East:

  • A recent report indicated that former Bills offensive coordinator Greg Roman has hard feelings towards Rex Ryan and felt that being associated with the outspoken coach would be damaging to his career. For what it’s worth, Roman went on the record with Alex Marvez of The Sporting News and denied any issues with Ryan. “I have nothing but respect for coach Ryan and I thought we had a great working relationship,” Roman said. “We met and he informed me of his decision. I thought it was handled very professionally. We then discussed how we could best make this work for everybody moving forward.”
  • After Brandon Marshall landed awkwardly on Thursday night, Jets coach Todd Bowles told reporters that the wide receiver was “fine.” Apparently, that’s not entirely the case. Marshall suffered an MCL injury and while the team believes that he’ll be ready to go against the Chiefs, it’s not a guarantee, a source tells Mike Florio of PFT. It’s an injury worth keeping an eye on as Marshall is arguably Gang Green’s greatest weapon. Through two games this year, Marshall has nine catches for 133 yards. In 2015, Marshall had 109 receptions for 1,502 yards and 14 touchdowns – arguably his strongest season to date.
  • Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has once again established himself as a hot head coaching candidate, ESPN.com’s Dan Graziano writes. The Pats have now gone 2-0 without Tom Brady or Rob Gronkowski and they even survived on Sunday afternoon without Jimmy Garoppolo for much of the game. “I was more so worried if (Garoppolo) was going to be OK or not,” running back LeGarrette Blount said. “As far as how we were going to do as an offense, I wasn’t worried about that.” McDaniels went 11-17 as the head coach of the Broncos before he was fired late in the 2010 season.
  • Speaking of Garoppolo, he’ll likely miss New England’s game against the Texans on Thursday because of a sprained AC joint in his throwing shoulder. That would open the door for third-round rookie Jacoby Brissett to make his first NFL start.
