Bills Put In Claim On Bruce Ellington

  • While the Jets won the rights to wide receiver Bruce Ellington last week, the Bills, Texans, and Chiefs all put in waiver claims for the former 49ers draft choice, tweets Kimberley A. Martin of Newsday. Ellington, of course, didn’t last long in New York, as the Jets waived him with an injury designation just one day after acquiring him. That means any of the other clubs that attempted claims on Ellington should have an another opportunity to acquire him, either through the waiver process or after New York potentially cuts Ellington from injured reserve.

Bills To Sign Anquan Boldin

The Bills are set to sign Anquan Boldin, as Peter Schrager of NFL.com tweets. As one would expect, it’s a one-year deal for the veteran wide receiver. Anquan Boldin

Boldin’s deal will pay him $2.75MM in 2017 plus another $1.25MM in incentives, a source tells ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (Twitter links). Schefter adds that Boldin agreed to a deal with Buffalo last week and backed out before having another change of heart on Monday morning.

Boldin, 36, isn’t quite as dynamic as he once was, but he showed last year that he can still be productive. Boldin had 67 catches and a career-high eight touchdowns, though it should be noted that he averaged a career-worst 8.7 yards per reception.

Boldin will be counted upon to serve as insurance for Buffalo in the event that star Sammy Watkins has to miss time this season. Aside from using a second round pick on Zay Jones in the spring, the Bills didn’t do a whole lot to beef up their thin wide receiver group. Now, they’re in better shape with Boldin.

You can jot Boldin down as the team’s No. 2 or No. 3 wide receiver, depending on how Jones fares in practice for the rest of the month. After that, free agent additions Rod Streater, Corey Brown, Andre Holmes, and Jeremy Butler are among the names pushing for spots on the 53-man roster. Dezmin Lewis and Brandon Tate are also fighting for jobs while Walt Powell must serve a four-game suspension to start the year.

Glenn "Hopefully" To Be Ready By Week 1

  • Cordy Glenn returned to Bills practice Sunday after a bout of ongoing foot trouble, and the sixth-year left tackle said he would “hopefully” be ready to go by Week 1, via Mike Rodak of ESPN.com. Ankle and foot injuries have dogged Glenn since last season. He recently received a second opinion from a specialist in Charlotte.

Cordy Glenn Timetable Still Uncertain

  • Cordy Glenn has struggled with lower-leg and foot problems since last season, and the Bills‘ franchise left tackle still has some uncertainty surrounding his status. That said, Glenn returned to practice on Sunday after seeing a foot specialist, Rapoport reports (on Twitter). Glenn recently received a second opinion on his foot from foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson, Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News reports. Sean McDermott called the veteran blocker day-to-day.
  • Corey Graham has experience at both secondary positions, but Jim Schwartz plans to use his former Bills charge at safety despite the Eagles being weaker at corner, Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com notes, adding that Malcolm Jenkins could shift into the slot on sub-packages. Graham has played most of his career at corner but moved to safety full-time in 2015.

Cordy Glenn Won't Need Surgery

  • Speaking to reporters Friday, Bills head coach Sean McDermott didn’t rule out foot surgery for left tackle Cordy Glenn. Both the Bills and Glenn can now breathe a sigh of relief, though, as the stalwart’s “fine” and will likely resume practicing next week, reports John Wawrow of The Associated Press. Glenn’s ankle injury limited him to a career-low 11 games last season, but the five-year veteran’s play still ranked an impressive 21st among 76 qualified tackles at Pro Football Focus.

Cordy Glenn May Need Ankle Surgery

  • Bills left tackle Cordy Glenn went for a second opinion on his injured left ankle and may have to undergo surgery, head coach Sean McDermott suggested Friday to reporters, including Mike Rodak of ESPN.com. Glenn has been dealing with ankle issues since last year, when he missed five games. The five-year veteran entered 2016 having posted three straight 16-start campaigns. Losing Glenn for an extended period of time would deprive the Bills of arguably their best offensive lineman and likely lead to second-round rookie Dion Dawkins taking the reins at left tackle. It would also further eat into Buffalo’s tackle depth – the team cut now-Lion Cyrus Kouandjio in the spring, and Seantrel Henderson will miss the first five games of the season because of a suspension. The Bills’ only other bookend with experience is right tackle Jordan Mills, who started 16 games a year ago but ranked an underwhelming 56th in performance out of Pro Football Focus’ 76 qualified OTs.

Bills To Sign Taiwan Jones

The Bills have agreed to a deal with running back Taiwan Jones, per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link).

The 29-year-old Jones came available when the Raiders released him last Thursday, thus ending a lengthy tenure in Oakland. Jones entered the NFL as the Raiders’ fourth-round pick in 2011 and went on to appear in 66 regular-season games with the club over the first six years of his career. He wasn’t much of a factor on offense as a Raider, with whom he totaled only 44 rushes and 17 catches, but Jones was an important cog on special teams. He was seventh among Raiders in special teams snaps just last year (241), and he’s only two seasons removed from leading the AFC in kick return yards (829).

In Buffalo, Jones will join LeSean McCoy, Jonathan Williams, Mike Tolbert and Joe Banyard as the team’s contingent at running back. Jones’ history indicates that if he’s going to make the Bills, he’ll do it as a special teamer. The Bills’ special teams unit was among the league’s worst last year, according to Football Outsiders.

Latest On Bills, Anquan Boldin

  • Free agent wide receiver Anquan Boldin‘s workout in Buffalo this past Monday hasn’t led to a deal, though head coach Sean McDermott hasn’t closed the door on the 36-year-old signing with the Bills. McDermott told Mike Rodak of ESPN.com and other reporters Thursday that the two sides are still determining whether they’re the right match for each other. McDermott also called the meeting with Boldin a “nice visit,” according to Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News (Twitter link).

Bills Not Interested In Colin Kaepernick

In case you were wondering, the Bills’ newfound vacancy at quarterback will not create a space for Colin Kaepernick. Bills GM Brandon Beane told reporters on Thursday that he is not interested in signing the free agent signal caller (Twitter link via Vic Carucci of The Buffalo News). Colin Kaepernick (vertical)

The Bills traded quarterback Cardale Jones to the Chargers this week, positioning rookie Nathan Peterman as the QB2 and T.J. Yates as the third signal caller. Beane also tells reporters that the team will keep three QBs for the foreseeable future and that’s a good sign for the journeyman Yates.

The Bills are passing on Kaepernick, but we learned on Thursday that the Ravens are at least exploring the possibility. Baltimore coach John Harbaugh has chatted with Kaepernick throughout the summer about backing up starter Joe Flacco.
